  • Once, Bangladesh was enriched with diverse plant species.
With rising population, plant quantity and species diversity keep decreasing.
Trees being a vital element of environment, natural balance starts to deteriorate.
Therefore, to preserve the natural balance, for collecting, conserving, displaying and creating genepool of diverse native and foreign plant species the National Botanical Garden was established on a 208 acres plot in Mirpur, Dhaka in 1961.
The National Botanical Garden’s land formations are uneven, plain and has quite a few waterbodies.
Therefore, since inception, the garden has had many native plant species.
After declaration as National Botanical Garden, Bangladesh Forest Department took on the Garden management.
From the beginning, beside conserving the local plants, the Garden has also been collecting, planting, researching and managing plants like Cannonball, Civet, Chalmugra, Chaplaish, Arjun, Gooseberry, etc. from various parts of the country.
At the same time, various foreign plant species including Tabebuia, African tulips, and baobabs are being conserved.
To plant, maintain and conserve these plants, the garden has been divided into 57 sections.
To identify plants, nameplate has been established in each section.
To preserve the floral diversity of Bangladesh, two nurseries have been established in the garden.
Here, saplings are produced and distributed to different places.
To conserve fruit bearing plants, a fruit garden has been established in section 6 of the garden.
With a variety of fruits, frugivorous animals have also found shelter here.
Sections 11 and 12 of the garden are foreign plant collections.
Plants from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, Australia, Japan and other countries are being conserved and studied here.
Exceptional and diverse shaped Orchid and Cactus attract all plant lovers, including students, researchers, etc.
So, to conservation those, Orchid House and Cactus House have been established.
With regular temperature control and proper care hybrid plants and saplings are being produced through Grafting method.
For flower lovers 2 beautiful rose gardens have been created in this garden.
Thousands of roses of different colors including red, yellow, black, brown, and white can be seen here.
Through hybridization, new varieties of roses are being grown in the rose garden.
With 23 Bamboo species, a Bambusetum has been established in the garden.
It continues to play vital role in conserving the country’s near extinct bamboo species from extinction.
Bamboo research and bamboo sapling production are also ongoing here.
Besides, to conserve and display the plant diversity, Rattan garden, Cool Mat garden, Pine garden, Hibiscus garden, Sal garden have been created here.
Herbal plants are collected from different parts of the country, to be planted, nurtured and conserved in Section 57.
Including Waterlily Pond, Lotus Pond and artificial lakes, there are 11 waterbodies of different size in the garden.
The waterbodies are vital in beautification of the garden.
Various aquatic plants are being conserved in these waterbodies.
In winter, some aquatic birds are seen in these reservoirs.
However, local birds like Munia, Tailorbird, Magpie robin, Common myna, Owl, Cuckoo are seen in the garden trees, throughout the year.
Including birds, various species of amphibians, reptiles and mammals are found in the garden.
Country’s endangered mammals, Pangolin and Porcupine are seen in this park.
By conserving these wildlife, the garden’s natural environment is being conserved.
However, excessive visitors are having damaging effect on the management of National Botanical Garden.
The garden's reservoirs and gardens are constantly being polluted and littered from environmentally harmful human activities, which is threatening the garden's natural environment.
So, stronger initiatives have to be taken for Garden management.
At the same time, everyone must become aware of the garden’s environmental significance.
Only then, the National Botanical Garden will sustain its glory.
