- 1987 PBA Seagram's Cooler US Open held at Narrow Plaza Lanes in Tacoma, Washington. The first match features Gary Dickinson versus Marshall Holman. The second match features Ron Bell versus Marshall Holman. The third match features Del Ballard Jr versus Ron Bell. The championship match features Pete Weber versus Del Ballard Jr.
SATURDAYS AT 230 PM... PBT was the best on ABC loved watching it every Saturday...
Sad to see Narrows Plaza Bowl going bye bye in 2022. I was 15 in 1987 when the U.S. Open was held in Tacoma ( University Place today) . I enjoyed bowling on those synthetic lanes myself! A great U.S. Open victory by Del Ballard Jr.! Thanks for this video on TH-cam! I have alot of memories @ Narrows Plaza !!!

Prize fund in 87 was 500k and 100k for first place, adjusted for inflation is 1.2M and 240k. Imagine them bowling for that amount today. Bowling would actually be taken seriously
That be awesome but unfortunately that will never happen. PBA has lost all of its major sponsorship. 2 handed bowling I consider illegal bowling balls same people every week all playing the same line. Bowling doesn't take skill and accuracy like it used too. I've been bowling for 45 years and it saddens me to see where bowling and the PBA is at. Top pros back in the 80's or 90's would win 300,000 a season. They couldn't win that much now if they win every tournament on the schedule.
@@joeycronan2652 I really agree with everything you said. When players have so many bowling balls in their arsenal how do you define the true talent? It's all about equipment and who can match up with the right equipment. How about one oil pattern, one ball and whoever is the best that's it. Back in the day a 300 actually meant something. Same with a 700 series. Now you shoot 300 and nobody blinks an eye. The game got too easy. Prize money literally has been the same for decades or less like you said. I don't see that changing anytime soon unfortunately.
@@joeycronan2652 The two handers are much more accurate than bowlers have ever been. I don't like watching them, either, but if a Jason Belmonte bowled in the 80's he'd absolutely dominate.
@@joemac999 your wrong he couldn't bowl that was back in the 80's or 90's. Short oil would have killed him. Maybe if he always bowled with a plastic ball then he wouldn't carry anything
@@joeycronan2652 he's bowled on short oil and used plastic equipment. Conventional bowlers are at a huge disadvantage in any era, and when the difference is that great they're pretty much dead.
This was when bowling and league bowling was the thing to fo back in the day.

I was at the TV finals that year when it was held at narrows plaza lanes. Got to talk to the legend Earl Anthony before the telecast and he even signed a bowling pin and a pair of linds shoes. Wish I still had those precious items
I bowled with Steve in this ProAm US OpenTournament at Narrows Plaza in Tacoma, Washington on January 3rd, 1987. I was 14 years old. He was awesome and he threw a perfect 300 game as my partner. I remember it well because so many legends showed up. Earl Anthony bowled 2 lanes down from us. Norm Duke, Pete Weber, and Marshall Holman was there too. I still have the official 1987 PBA Tour Program with all their signatures.
In the late 90's, my husband bowled in a ProAm against Marshall Holman. My husband beat Marshall and he was really really upset. LOL.
I just watched the broadcast of the 2017 US Open. Norm Duke came in 4th. It was ironic that Marshall was one of the Announcers. Seeing them both on TV after 30 years brought me to find this. Thanks for the memories.

Del had such a heavy roll, never saw so many half pocket strikes!! You needed power AND accuracy back in the urethane era...
He also was a master of geting the ball OUT onto the lane SMOOTHLY, preserving those revs for the pocket!
I excelled during the urethane era... it wasn't that difficult. Today's bowlers are spoiled. I averaged 231 using a black angle...no big deal.

WATCHED THIS SHOW EVERY SATURDAY.. EARL ANTHONY WAS THE BEST.. ABC screwed up dumping this show to ESPN.. Beau and Chris were the best team.. ever!!!!! Miss the sat afternoon show

18.00. Holman adjusted his eyebrows before the shot. That's a new one for me. :) I'll always have a special place in my heart for Holman and Roth. Great players and good sportsmen. Most of the time. ;) Weber might have won more titles, but that does NOT make him a good sportsman or role model. No, I prefer nicer people. Strange huh? :)
No, that isn't strange at all. I can't stand it when a bowler like Pete Weber loses his temper over the slightest little thing. That all happened after his dad Dick Weber died. Even the fans watching in person felt very uncomfortable when he bowled for fear that he was going to yell at them. Good sportsmanship has always been one aspect of a good bowler. I agree with you about Marshall Holman. I haven't watched Mark Roth very often, but when I did watch him I thought that he was a very friendly man just like Marshall Holman was and is. I always admired Norm Duke. He always struck me as being an extremely humble and kind man. His wife Karen appeared to be that way too.
He was intense. That didn't make him a poor sportsman. He congratulated an opponent who defeated him, consoled an opponent he defeated.
You think Holman was a good sportsman? He was a total scumbag of a human being.

Everyone has their favorites. Holman did consistently hit the pocket and couldn't carry. Pete came up short on that day. THE TWO BEST PROFESSIONAL BOWLERS IN 1987. The complete all-around games of the two best right handers at that time.
I watched the '87 US OPEN a few times over the years. I like Del Ballard Jr. a lot but I was rooting for Pete Weber. Iiked the interview with Dick Weber and Bo Burton just as much as the championship match. I was also hoping that Holman would bowl well. Dick Weber is just the best in terms of being the consumate professional. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED ALL OF HIS COMMENTS. REST IN PEACE DICK WEBER. AND REST REST IN PEACE JUANITA WEBER TOO. She was part of the success behind the entire Weber family.

bo said before pete's 1st frame that his only win from the top spot was in st. louis in 1986. he actually was seeded #2. he bowled duke in the semi final and dennis jacques in the finals.

Once you have the straight back and through and balance, it's all about timing.
That's where DB gets it just like anyone, from cranker to traditional.
I like RB's angle of attack but he just didn't have DB's solid basic form.
1st frame against Pete, you could see he was late.
5th and 6th frames, I think he just tensed up a bit.
