Robert Evans (the head of Paramount at that time) I believe was good friends with Pete Rozelle (NFL commissioner). That was one of the main reasons that the film crew was able to do this. Today it would probably be unheard of.

They wouldn't try to do this today. They'd use computerized background to replicate the effects. This is why movies today have so little passion, so little sincerity or spontaneity.
