    My best friend Jay reminded me so much of Jem. He died in a car crash when he was 26 but was tough as hell and was such a loyal friend. We got into 3 or 4 fist fights growing up with eachother and he won everyone. The next day we were back to best friends. He was a short stocky kid and i was tall and lanky in my 20s. I remember he knocked out this guys teeth and a month later the same guy held the door open for us at a gas station. I always looked up to him and learned alot and the funny thing was we were the same age he always just knew more and was so confident. When i was the new kid in town he took me under his wing and nmw happend between us we always came back together. Me and his older brother still talk to this day. Still think about him everyday miss you jay.

    This scene is so much better with Doug explaining about Jem’s sister not knowing who the father is. Sucks that the original theatrical cut doesn’t include this part and just goes from Doug saying he’s not going to being angry and saying the “cheat sheet” line. The shorter version doesn’t have the same emotional value without Doug explaining that the kid isn’t his.

    • @NJ187
      @NJ187 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Your right that the theatrical version doesn't go into depth on the subject, but he does say, "She's not my kid. Did she tell you that." Before this scene ever happened you know that Blake's character is caught up in the life of fast money. She likes to drink, get high, and get fucked. So when this scene came around the director realized that the extra dialogue was unnecessary because the film had already implied what she was about. If anything the comment about there not being enough free clinics in Mattapan to find out who the father is takes away from the scene because I don't believe Doug would try to embarrass his best friend and sister like that.

    • @shaunbang
      @shaunbang 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@NJ187 true but I still think it’s better context keeping it in and it’s really only like 5-10 seconds of more screen time so I do wonder why Ben Affleck took it out. You make a good point thoughz

    • @KevinLosani
      @KevinLosani 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good points here on both accounts. I could take the free clinic line or leave but it does give Jem more reason to slug Dougie as that line would cut deep.

    Good dialogue in this scene. Real talk between lifelong friends who are finally pulling old skeletons out of the closet, both get some hard truths neither really wants to listen to or admit to themselves, but they are both right in their own way.
    Doug is right in leaving, but Jem is also right in wanting something more for his loyalty. I mean his family took care of Doug, he killed someone so Doug doesn't get killed and than sat 9 years in the prison for it. The retort "I never asked you to do any of this" is true, but it's not enough for such sacrifice and help and Doug knows this too.
    I've been in a situation like this with my family. I was Jem I have to say - someone who sacrificed a lot without the others needing to ask him and then when it came time for them to pay me back, and I actually asked for something, I didn't get it. It hurt me and irritated me. From then on, I really stopped putting myself in front of others to help as self-sacrifice needs to be completely selfless - you can't expect anything in return and I have to admit, I'm not so gracious. I believe in that you give back what you receive or you at least try to. If not, you don't deserve the help. That's my belief.

    I get it. Jem has been alone in this tough world of southern Boston and he truly sees Doug as a brother and would always love him even if he betrayed him. And he’s not necessarily mad at Doug for moving on but he’s mad at the universe that he’s losing the only person he truly loves and that’s his brother Doug.

    • @michaelscott674
      @michaelscott674 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And Jem is such a tough person who has suffered more than anyone can imagine that he can’t simply say “I love you Brother” to Doug. But that’s what he’s literally trying to tell him. Is that he loves him so much he would literally kill another person for him if he had to.
