The bibles says that God reveals the mysteries of the kingdom to his friends. The main problem scientist have is that they want to force God to speak to them and show himself when they have no intention of truly knowing him, they just want to prove a point. The point is God will not reveal himself to you because you don't want him. The Holy Spirit is awesome and I wouldn't give him up for nothing. He is the one who confirms God in my life. Again the Holy Spirit comes to those who believe not to those who have disbelieve and need to physically see to believe.
***** Well if you think that you are the product of evolution from apes then how do you explain that your DNA is unique? We are a different species with emotions and intelligence......and we are loved unconditionally by this God that and God has given us rational thought and if you studied his word would show you God is alive and well and all powerful.
***** that is not true. God was not invented 2000 years ago ignorant fool. You are the bible that is called "fool". Oh and i wonder how you look like, you really want to think that you came from a "monkey"? very sad....
***** "Any sentence that starts with 'the bible says' automatically looses any credit for a rational argument or reason." Really? My 1st question to you is this: How can you make such a rash comment when you have not even read the "Bible"? My second question: Forget about the personalities such as "Jesus", Moses, Abraham etc (with whom you seem to have problems) are you saying that the geographical and archaeological findings and the migration of the ancient peoples as described, make the "Bible" lose any credit for rational geographical and archaeological argument or reason? My 3rd question. Are you suggesting that the ancient historical and archaeological findings are based on a myth or lie and that they are historically untestable? Are you denying ANY historical evidence which routinely includes ancient literature, business records, and government documents, analysed in conjunction with linguistics, geography, and archaeological analysis of physical objects (pottery, coins, remains of buildings, etc.), using forensic science techniques? Are you denying that after many millions of man-hours of research and evidence analysis, archaeology has repeatedly confirmed the reliability of the accuracy regarding the historicity of the Bible? Are you denying the findings of some of the greatest 20th-century archaeologists such as, William F. Albright and Nelson Glueck, who both lauded the Bible (even though they were non-Christian and secular in their training and personal beliefs) as being the single most accurate source document from history. Over and over again, the Bible has been found to be accurate in its places, dates, and records of events? I guess you ARE in denial my friend. Why? Because it is simply based on my 1st question to you! .
***** "Your full of hot air Bruce." How can that be? I am merely asking questions. "Any credible scientist would be laughed right out of the room if they claimed the Bible was historically accurate." Oh..... and a "credible" scientist is more knowledgeable than an acclaimed archaeologist and historian!!!! Hmmmm....so we don't need historians and archaeologists..... the so called evolution of science will do it all. What has science got to do with the issue of this topic? I said nothing about science. The issue was the accuracy of the bible based on history and archaeology, As if to suggest that science does not need the "services" of historians and archaeologists. DEAD WRONG. We don't need science or scientists to tell us that ancient people built temples any more than we need scientists to tell us about the history of the Battle of Waterloo which happened 200 years ago to this day. Well let me tell you my friend. History and archaeology are undeniable facets of the evolutionary process, whether you like it or not.
As a child, when my soul was new, awake, and ready to learn, my parents told me about Jesus, they also told me about Santa Claus and the tooth fairy. As I grew older I began to learn more about these and and the story of God's love and how He sent his Son Jesus to offer me His unconditional love and eternal life rang true in my soul, I could feel it. Santa and the tooth fairy did not, they had no substance. The Bible is accepted by my very skeptical soul as the truth.
Prof. John Lennox is like a light that shines in the dark. He is so warmhearted and wise and I cannot help but smile and feel happy everytime I see or hear him. Thank you so much, Prof. Lennox!
Yes, he is a legend. I think whether or not he leads people to Christ thru his deep and intelligence answers (and I hope and honestly think he does), he solidifies my belief in the Holy Trinity. ❤
+Count Jinsula Me too! I'm so pleased that Jesus did not come today in America, in the times of lethal injection as a means of capital punishment. All the junkies would also tear up every time they had a fix. Lennox in his best BS mode. What about all the real people that love him? Surely he is pleased about that? I don't tear up - he cracks me up!!!
What a wonderful talk. We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to listen even though we weren't there in person. Thank You so much for uploading this! :)
Dr. Lennox and the great scholar probing him with difficult questions dominating our public discussions in the 21st century, are great exceptional individuals. I did enjoy listening to the dialogue. To stay awake all night till past 4am listening to these great gentleman is a testament that I find the topic of their discussions very interesting, fantastic and important. I will do that over and again. Thank you for organising such dialogue.
@Starfox Experiencing God by the person of Jesus Christ who by the death on the cross forgave my sins when I was still a sinner like you and the rest of humanity and was raised from the dead to give us eternal life and soon to be back to judge the dead and the living. I understand if you criticize me, I was like you before until I found myself on a very desperate moment came to my life and I found needing a savior. Your time will time Starfox but don't wait till it's too late. God bless!
Mark Lozada Not to be disrespectful, but you must see how your testimony is likely to be questioned due to your admission that your belief came at a "very desperate" (aka: emotionally vulnerable) time in your life. All the same information was available to you prior to your time of desperation.
@PaulNStein When a person was blind of his sin at that time he is blind and that's the reality of it. I just made a comment to Starfox's comment. This is not all my testimony. God has so changed my life inside and out that it's not enough for me to type in here using a cell phone. It's not an emotion thing my friend. I was just simply saying that "I was blind but now I see". When I said that I was desperate it didn't mean mean I had nothing. To be honest I had a better life before I found Jesus, better life in a worldly sense. I was desperate of a savior cos the more I see Jesus the more I see my being a sinner. My friend, I was already a so called born again Christian before when I was a child. Been playing drums in worship thinking I was already "ok" then found out that I'm really a sinner, oh and I was already a "good person" but that's not enough. Being good won't save a person but a real relationship with our Savior Jesus! God bless!
Christian Thomas It's life, and blaming god is not the answer, but living it. 1 Peter 5:10 "And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you".
Every other person born into a non-Christian culture is happy, healthy, strong, confirmed, and established? There are no problems or suffering outside of Christianity? The conquest of Canaan was ugly but had to be done. Yes, Jesus did order it to be done. So what? And what is your difficulty with the Ezekiel passage? The two sisters are a metaphor for the idolatry of Judah and Israel in the days of the divided kingdom. The Deuteronomy passage is a warning about how bad life for ancient Israel will get if they abandon God. What, you expected him to say life will continue to be hunky-dory if they do?
Hi Christian Thomas, it is a tragedy when a child or anyone dies of cancer. I had a lumpectomy in 2014, but I still believe in God. Jesus didn't order killing people in the Old Testament. When God did, I think you are referring to the Canaanites, He had a good reason. First, He gave them 400 years to repent, but they only grew worse. They were not nice people and you wouldn't want them for neighbors, and God didn't want them to be Israel's neighbors. They practiced all kinds of sexual perversion and sacrificed their children to their pagan gods.
what does travel have to do with anything? Do you mean that by traveling knowledge can be obtained? What is wrong with simply reading? I can travel to any place at any time to real or imagined.
If a person in front of me asked to explain the existence of God I would raise my bottle of juice, take a sip and ask him, what did this drink taste like? he wouldn't have an answer. It is exactly the same way with God. In order to understand him you need to experience him. - But the helper, the holy spirit, whom the father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and to your remembrance all that i have said to you. This is why the bible seems like nonsense to nonbelievers, I know this because I was one of them. There is nothing you can say to an atheist to make him believe in God, for we believe because of faith something they don't understand. Most of them try to hard to make believers become atheists like they are not fully convinced on what they believe. God bless you all!
+rationalmind Why are you atheist always trying to offend others that think different? I don't mean to disrespect anyone. If you disagree with our beliefs, just move along.
+rationalmind About the picture, I'm guessing you haven't watched "The Office". Moving on, it is because of reasoning that I came to my conclusion. You talk about science like it has the answers to everything yet science can't explain why it takes more genes to make a tomato than a human or explain consciousness. It is not my intention to start an argument, as I already know, that could go on for ever. My intention of my post was to share my faith with other believers. Which by the way, it is something we all have too, and science can't explain either. Have a good day dude.
+DwightShrute Anything you do not understand, GODFUCKINGDIDIIT, that ignorant statement answers nothing. Your god explains nothing not even his own existence.
Thanks for posting! I very much enjoyed listening and I really appreciate Lennox's honest answer at the end of the Q&A where he says he does not have the answer to the problem of pain and suffering, but gives his perspective on the issue.
No naturalism as a worldview in and of itself is not, but those who espouse naturalism believe it is the only path to truth. Nature does however declare the glory of God according to Psalms and Romans, but natural man supresses the knowledge of God that nature provides because of his love for sin.
People always argue about God vs Science. First of all, there wouldn't have been science if God didn't make anything. If there is a creation then there's a "Creator" and I believe that it's God. And I believe it coz it's in His word.
***** Considering these People where just Goat Herders, they knew stuff about the Universe that was impossible to know at that time, so no, it's not just some book! and advances in Scientific knowledge has proved this. The Bible was the first too say the Universe had a beginning!
Mike Dunn That's where you are wrong, some of the smartest people that lived and are currently living where all believers in a "Higher Being" I fully believe Science can not work unless one takes a Theological View! The Rise of Science, Newton, Galileo Johannes Kepleretc where all believers in God, they all believed that materialism was not all that there was.... I mean let's take Issac Newton for example, when he wrote his mathematical principia (Gravity), when he discovered the law of gravitation, did not make the common mistake of saying: ‘now I have a law of gravity, I don’t need God’. Instead, he wrote Principia Mathematica, the most famous book in the history of science, expressing the hope that it would persuade the thinking man to believe in a Creator. it takes a very narrow minded person indeed too say that materialism is all there is! Newton could see, what sadly many people nowadays seem unable to see...... So please, don't talk about intellect too me! Because it's just Ignorant.
***** I really can't believe your Ignorance right now! Religion and God are two different things, Newton did believe that there was Intelligent design in the Universe.. He defiantly did believe in a God. He was an advocate of Intelligent design... he wrote about it. Newton explicitly argued that all of the various kinds of living things in Nature were personally designed by God. His natural philosophy was meant to lead to God through the inductive method. For Newton nature was not the result of blind chance, but the product of a God who is everywhere and whose sight is limited neither in a physical or cognitive sense. He even said in his work's, that science could lead us to God, and for espousing Intelligent Design. PLEASE, Go and Read this if you can, or have time:www.newtonproject.sussex.ac.uk/view/texts/normalized/NATP00121 In this treatise, Newton explains his philosophy of Nature, which is firmly grounded in experimental observation, but at the same time thoroughly God centered. Newton also puts forward an Intelligent Design argument..
***** Yes, I believe all of them apart from the last one.... >> "Do you believe God is white man living in the sky" This statement is nothing more then a straw man argument and Ignorance, not only do you disparage philosophy, but also disparage sophisticated theology without even understanding it. Christians don’t believe in such silly and absurd things like that God is a man in the sky. God is ineffable. God cannot be material. The average person would leave Christianity tomorrow if you told him its true meaning was that there was an old man in the sky with a beard who has human emotions and thinks human like thoughts..... Nice try tho... but no!
@James Dare 1. Its a chick then?! How do you know? 2. If it is sturdy, irrefutable, empirical evidence I would be forced to accept it smartypants! If your "evidence" is just allegorical, parabolical, mystical, biblical etc then yes, I will certainly reject it (as every reasonable and rational thinking person would do) So whats it gonna be Murph?
peter renner Daniel Seven said the truth. I know you feel you need to SEE more as you can with experimentation as a scientist. The challenge is that true Christians (and just because someone says they are one doesn’t mean they are) have had an experience with the Holy Spirit where we are filled and changed to have the Spirit inside us who controls us if we allow. It’s hard to explain to someone who has never experienced that. So, for us, there has been a “proven scientific experiment” as we are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s not something you can easily understand. Please test God and ask openly for Him to show Himself to you.
I'm still waiting for atheists to prove atheism is logical. Instead, i get long-winded gas attacks from them about it. Intelligent atheists have good reasons for being atheists, but then, atheism is dying because most atheists lack reason. Nietzsche warned that this would happen, and that's why atheism is dying.
***** Archeologists find ancient copies of the Qur’an all over the Middle East, and there’s many versions. It’s believed that none of the Medina verses, claiming Mohammed slaughtered Jews or Christians, let alone raped any, were written by Mohammed, but at Uthman’s command. Uthman was later assassinated. It’s entirely possible he had Mohammed assassinated because Mohammed was very pro-Christian. That, according to writings by his relatives. They discovered one in a tomb of a believer who passed away before Mohammed did, and it’s very small, not the size of the one today. And then they stopped talking. And, unable to use logic to prove atheism is real, Nietzsche went insane. Have you ever noticed, most atheist leaders are a little weird? Creepy. Ayn Rand would rave against religion. Sagan believed space aliens were coming for him. Mao, Lenin, Stalin were sadists. If your father is a Muslim, then you are. That’s their law. I have a copy of Ammi’s article and am working through it. Safarti’s as well. Each deserves to be studied. The IQ in secular nations is sinking. Sociologists blame it on their lifestyle. “If it feels good, do it.” My parents generation called it slow suicide. But, what do atheists have to live for?
***** Ah, but Uthman wrote the Qur’an, not Mohammed. After Mohammed died, Uthman had all copies of the Qur’an burned but what he wanted read. Shortly thereafter, Uthman was assassinated, and there’s rumors to this day he killed Mohammed so he could take over. He decided the rights of the caliph, a god-like position (Erogan of Turkey is being proposed as the first caliph in over a century). They’re finding a lot of Qur’an now from the time of Mohammed, and they do not match much of the Uthman Codex. Some do not have the Medina verses, where Mohammed is said to call for all-out war. One they think is from before Mohammed lived. Mohammed may well have been a Christian. One of his older wives was, and she’s the one he entrusted his own copy of the Qur’an to, which Uthman forced her to give up and destroyed. Yeah, wow, but some sheriff is being castigated for putting In God We Trust on the door of his patrol car. One major thing about atheists you need to understand--they believe the truth is relative to the situation. Today’s hard facts are yesterday’s stupid comments and weren’t really true, but might be tomorrow again. Narcissism is a very strong problem with atheists, as we can see from Dahmer and Ted Bundy, Hitler, Stalin, and so on. With the constant lowering of IQ among atheists, is it any wonder they’re narcissist? On Islam, keep in mind Jesus is a great prophet. Imams use the Name of Jesus to expel demons and plead blessings. Work from that angle, and that the Law of Moses is for those who are in disobedience. Those who obey God live under the blessings. Europe is going Nazi to stop the Muslim invasion. Major problem, Hitler allied with Muslims in order to fight Europeans. God’s peace to you.
***** But, many Christians became Muslim because they believed Mohammed. Most left after Uthman rewrote the Qur’an. Mohammed would not have added to the Bible. Also, he made war on the enemies of Christians, including the Ebonites. Uthman may have been influenced by the Ebonites, but were Mohammed not very pro-Christian, he never would have made the claims on the Bible as he did, the very word of God, if you have questions about your faith, ask the Jews and the Christians, the Jews and Christians are entitled to their land, and so on. No where does he claim the Bible is corrupt, but that it’s pure and protected by God. Uthman rewrote what he dared to. What Mohammed may have done is to create a book to teach with. Arabs didn’t have good writings in their own language. There are 4 major versions of the Qur’an, Arabian, Asian, Sufi, and black African. Minor versions abound. But, the fact is, archeologists are finding versions older than Uthman’s that are far different from his. But, try to get an answer from a Muslim. But this knowledge is growing common among Muslims, who question how Islam could be a religion of peace and yet produce ISIS and others.
Art 20 I just started to watch his video and read his book tho. what I like about him is that he's not judgemental, he encourages us to think and find our own answer, providing us his logic, so we can decide if his logic can be accepted. He responded our question but not determine the answer for us, we find the answer ourselves, for ourselves, for the growth of our own faith.
A civilized discussion between two gentlemen with a high level of respect although their opinions might differ, what a breath of fresh air ! Thank you Mr.Lowenstein and Mr.Lennox.
To me, the problem of good and evil is not a problem at all. Everyone has seen what happens to a child who always get their way, they become spoiled rotten. Trust me, you would not want to see how mankind would act in a world were nothing bad ever happened to anyone. Lennox rocks, takes for posting this.
WOW, I respect both of these men so much. John Lennox especially because I'm a christian, who aspires to someday be a man of science and mathematics. He is just purely inspirational and to hear him expound upon the most controversial questions of this world, motivates me to someday be a person of that stature, and expertise. Very engaging video and VertisForum, you get two thumbs up from me.
Everything was created through The Word..i.e The Light........ everything.that is made is. made out of dust. Every created thing in their finite manifest is dust Therefore ALL is dust. All came from the dust and ALL shall return to the dust t. The Word is the final judge.
In a day when so much immorality is rampant across Academia, Prof. John Lennox is a voice in the "wilderness" speaking truth and a new life to those who may seek a life at the Cross of Christ. Also his final remarks for Justice to the evil in the world that will occur before Christ! Amen!
You cannot even really claim anything scientific - unless you go outside of the realm of science to do so. Linguistics, for example, is outside of the natural sciences. Take this example: ascribe to the words - not the concepts they signify, but the actual characters drawn out in pixels - "roast chicken" a meaning using only the natural sciences. That is, show me that "roast chicken" must scientifically mean the concept we think of when we see this word.
The fact that Christian god "always existed" doesn't preclude the possibility that it was created. For example there may be a Primary God, which abilities include modifying the past. This Primary God could create Christian God together with modifying the past the way that made Christian God always exist.
You tell him not to assume God and other supernatural things as fact, yet you call them false. I cannot help but point out the hypocrisy in that statement, in that you are assuming God's nonexistence is a fact.
Do you happen to recall the name / time / place of these debates? I only ask because I just watched one between Dawkins and Lennox, and apart from when Lennox asks Dawkins "how do you know your wife is faithful" there seems to me no form of humiliation on Dawkins part.
Back again... Just watched a Hitchens Vs Lennox debate... Not really sure how you are coming to the conclusion that Lennox won that one either.. matter of fact, the debate was held in Alabama, and to my surprise (due only to geographical stereotyping) Hitchens got the FAR bigger applause at the end of the debate.
Pfft easy! Hitch is like Dawkins, just another hateful religion-hater. Bitter and stupid. Both just preach speculative philosophy, no more. And Dawkins even said himself to his rational response mob that Lennox totally out did him!. He said he was caught unawares, embarrased. Nuff said!. How does that not hammer home the point that Lennox won?? That and he called Dawkins arguments school boy grade... Getting onto Hitch, what a joke he was!. A pseudo intellectual, Dr Ravi zacharias(a colleague of lennox) also tore his arguments to shreds. True irony is the fact that these men who profess themselfs wiser without a belief in God are being completely trumped by men who profess totally the opposite.
Hence why I am asking for the video you are referring to here, because the one I watched (in my opinion) had an entirely different outcome, I am interested to see if we are talking about the same debate. Also wondering how you come to the conclusion that it is pseudo intellectualism that leads to statements like “What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof.” sounds neither insincere or pretentious to me? Matter of fact, the opposite side of the coin there would be the pseudo intellectualism you speak of, yet seem to have trouble comprehending. If I make an unsubstantiated and non-testable claim, then insist others believe me, that sounds more within the realms of insincere and pretentious.
It was Lennox vs Dawkins. Pretty much every debate ive seen with Lennox, lennox always comes out on top. Theres WLC and Krauss, another great debate. And Dr Ravi zacharias
As a child I was completely convinced of the existence of fairies, I even built a home for them. In my heart I had no doubt and felt great joy that they lived nearby and slept soundly at night because I knew they would protect me. Does that mean fairies really exist?
@@Psartz "provide evidence for what i have asked..." Mpffff... you are obviously and evidently not friends with logic, reason and rationaitly. Its the duty of the one making the claims to back them up with adequate evidence you brainiac, not the other way around. So why dont you ask the religious freaks and fanatics to back up theri silly, absurd, outlandisch and tbh pretty fckd up claims huh.
Lennox believes in Christianity because he was raised a Christian. His parents were Christian, they told him they loved him and god loved him etc. He maintained his belief after he developed his intellect because he likes the idea of a Christian world with a loving Christian god, not because it makes sense. Sad to see such a man succumb to wishful thinking.
much the same can be said, and truthfully so, about evolution with it's "proofs' continually being proven false; example: Nebraska Man- found upon investigation to be built up from a pig's tooth [yes, a pig's tooth, that's all it was] and lots of imagination and wishful thinking. follows the same pattern as peking man.. Lucy[a three foot tall chimpanzee], peking man.. and on and on...
stillwill2215 If you think evolution is continually being proved wrong then you are way out of touch. Ask any scientist. There have been a few hoaxes but it really isn't "and so on and so on." They are relatively rare. There is a massive amount of evidence for evolution and if you think that most of it is a sham and is constantly being proved wrong then you must be reading mostly Christian based news.
English Channeled Is evolution atheistic? Not by common terminology. Of course atheism means "without theism" so by that def then it is atheistic. But by common terms the theory of Darwinian Evolution is agnostic. Agnosticism flies in the face of Christianity tho. And when I made my comment I was arguing against Stillwill2215 who seems to be a Christian and argues that evolution is a hoax.
English Channeled Very good point. Officially, agnosticism holds that we can never know if there is a god or not, and Darwinian Evolution does not make that kind of claim. But its hard to imagine an "ardent theist" who believes in Evolution. I mean it must be the kind of ardent theist that strongly believes the stories in the bible are to be viewed as metaphor. These kind of theist don't strike me as being very ardent.
English Channeled But you have to factor in the specifics. For example, homosexuality. The bible says that it is a sin, but Darwinian Evolution says it is ingrained into the genome. Why would god create people who are naturally predisposed to sin? Why would god say it is man's duty to be fruitful and multiply, and create sinners who are incompatible with this proclamation? It flies in the face of reason. Darwinian Evolution is a product of reason, while theism is incompatible with reason alone. And BTW I agree with Hugh Min that humor is possibly the highest pursuit of humanity.
Concerning the issue of suffering if there is a God, I'd like to add that God created the world perfect until sin entered and it became a broken world. But Christianity gives hope where atheism does not. As the Bible says, "If only in this world we (Christians) have our hope, we are of all men most miserable."It also says "In this world you will have tribulations, but be of good cheer, because I have overcome the world."
@@bobbieolsen7264Dude... you don't know about Exodus 20:7 and Deuteronomy 5:11? Is that the best home schooling gets you? You don't even know your bible? John Lennox made a business out of god. ;-)
If you state that the universe and time were created "together" then how was the creation if the universe outside of time? What about the elements of fine tuning to create the big bang? Is it metaphysically possible?
Do you believe that love is real? Can it be genuinely known through human experience? Do you trust that your memories are accurate? Do you believe that human beings have value? Have you ever thought something or someone is beautiful? Lennox point is that there are truths that we hold as humans that cannot be tested in a lab, but that does not make them untrue.
Thank God for me to live to watch this video. Prof Lennox resembles Winston Churchill sometimes. I'm a believer in Christ already, but i pray to have Prof Lennox's intelligence and wisdom to preach and defend the Gospel in Jesus name. Amen!!!
A priori knowledge is independent from any experience. I got all my knowledge about God from various sciences; archaeology, geology, biology, etc., and then secular history, legal evidential analysis and then finally Biblical history, and prophetic history, which may not be a science but it's certainly compelling when it's always accurate. From all of these I came to the conclusion that God existed and that the Judaean God was the one who was always correct. I was not raised in a Christian home. I got my evidence first, then faith, and then first hand experience of what God can do in a life that has submitted itself to Him and does their best to be obedient. Because the Bible states that you will only see the power of God in those two things; submission and obedience. And I did. I absolutely adore John Lennox and thoroughly enjoy listening to his interviews and debates.
I was listening to Dr Kaku (theoretical physicist from NY) the other evening speaking of black holes (Seeing Black Holes on Science channel). He was noting how the theory of relativity breaks down, resuliting in infinity at the singularity. The answer was worse when they attempted a quantum theory of relativity (infinity +). Then he said "the universe is smarter than we are". So my question is "to which part of the inanimate universe is he ascribing intelligence??" The stars? The dirt?
Pt 2. I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that there is not one awareness/consciousness but at least three involved in understanding 'reality'. 1. Biological awareness: Your basic senses, sight, hearing, touch etc 2. Social awareness: Group awareness, the 'subjective', empathy, compassion, religion, conformity/originality etc 3. Intellectual awareness: Conceptual understandings, abstractions, the 'objective', science, theology, truth etc. These are all necessary and function concurrently.

if the tooth fairy is studied we would know there is a tooth fairy..it was our parents..it was not made up...it was a spiritual idea of love and comfort...
I do appreciate the entire lecture. However, and please correct me if I'm wrong with at least some reference, I think the Golden Rule Christ gave was different from the rule present before, in the sense that he took it from the negative: do not do to others ... which is present everywhere and in every philosophy, perhaps even in the basic human instinct... to the positive: do to others, which is an essential transformation.
Right. Before reading this I made the same comment. As he did with so many things in His sermon on the mount and at other times, Christ raised the bar, even on the Law of Moses.
@@donblosser8720 indeed. Even today, the rule is instinctively understood by most in the negative sense; the positive sense being way tougher to implement and requiring a rebirth from above...
I truly admire Prof Lennox for his intellectually correlating science and God. ......When it comes to the last question that was asked by one of his audience regarding to the suffering of innocent people in this world, he was trying his best even though he did not answered it convincingly that God did not allow suffering but the free choice of human beings......... Regardless a person is innocent or not, if his/her ancestry had some kind of demonic influence, that demonic spirit will be inherited by that innocent person, and could result him/her in suffering of a flesh if not in soul. This is hard to explain it scientifically but spiritually.
"how are you so sure it applies to everyone?" I'm not sure I even understand what you mean. Why would an excellent explanation of human experience apply to everyone?
Good one! And if God was not compassionate and merciful he would have vaporized billions of arrogant fools* a long time ago. *BTW, when the Bible mentions fools, it is not talking about the cognitively disabled. Rather the morally disabled, able to understand but refusing to do so.
@@donblosser8720 "And if God was not compassionate and merciful he would have vaporized billions of arrogant fools* a long time ago." Oh, you mean like that time when he drowned 99.999(9)% of every living thing in global flood? "Good one!"
That's not logical positivism. See, you can't do away with the burden of proof. If you make a claim, you have to provide evidence for it. And the evidence must meet certain quality standards. There is no way around that, otherwise everyone can claim anything they want. We have to go by public knowledge. If you think you have divinely revealed private knowledge but can't demonstrate it's not just an illusion (can you even know for yourself?) than we can't really accept it in a public discourse.
"e says he does not have the answer to the problem of pain and suffering," Thats a surprise. Pain is unavoidable in life, but suffering involves a decision. Its rarely a direct decision, children usually suffer from decisions their parents made. Atheists have a hard time reconciling this issue. Theists are supposed to know the answer. There is no spiritual growth without suffering.
Well, then, we must also say Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, and indeed a vast amount of ancient knowledge was all made up by medieval scholars, because very often the only surviving copies of works we have by or about them come from the Middle Ages. There is a science which examines manuscripts, and dates the original versions based on the contents of the copies, and purports the original contents based on the copies. There are hundreds of fragments and copies of the NT, many 1800 years old.
I am a Christian of Lutheran persuasion, so the God-question is resolved in my own mind, but the issue -- pro and con -- has always interested me. The ubiquitous use of human language reveals the presence of the metaphysical (spiritual) realm all around us because even scientists are forced to dip into this realm of meaning to give precision to their own terminology when they try to explain things. Christ is Logos, or source of all meaning. When you speak, it's His breath you breathe.
When people say "Science says," what they are really saying is "NATURALISM" says. My opinion, is that Naturalism answers "how" questions, and faith answers "why" questions.
Truth doesn't exist without evidence. without evidence it is simply a thought in someone's head and unless it can be tested it is just an idea. I play with ideas all the time and philosophy is fun, but it often just poses questions and rarely answers anything. I will not live my life by fanciful ideas I will look for the evidence. You can carry on believing what someone says as truth, I will remain a skeptic. Its healthier and leads to a more honest and often truthful view of life.
How does your relationships work out? Do you hire a private detective to check up on your friends, and one to check up on that one and one to....I don't believe you sir, I think you have faith in your friends, and people and do not stick them in a test tube. Just a thought.
Starting on 6:07 is one awesome part: It is unintelligent to assume “the nature of explanation.... either God or science.... extremely wrongheaded.... God and science is not in the same categories...”
Have you read the bible? These are the "words of the lord". Tell me please, why would the lord want to promote slavery? Examples of slavery in the bible: Leviticus 25:44-46 How to buy and sell slaves as livestock Exodus 21:7-11 Sex slavery Exodus 21:2-6 Treatment of Hebrew Slaves Exodus 21:20-21 Beating? slaves Let's not forget Leviticus 18:22 for homophobia or Ecclesiastes 7:26 for sexism.
look up dawkins gets owned, you'll find it everywhere. same with dicarlo, schermer and Krauss but lennox NEVER gets owned. we have our answer, ignorant atheist do not
The rules of God... Worship me or else, sing songs about me or else! ask me to be forgiven for things you have done in your life... or burn for ever... gee what a loving god.
God doesn't force into his presence against your will. If you choose to be without God, he gives you what you choose, and that ultimately is what hell is. All good is from God, your free to sin in hell all you want, you forget that we have offended him in a way where WE ALL are meant for hell because God is also justice and righteous. He literally cannot tolerate sin. Sin can only be paid by payment of blood. God has already judged sin 2000 years ago, all at once. Only God himself met the standards of ultimate payment. So HE offered himself to pay for our offenses against HIM. He's saying hey I already bought your freedom, here it is if you accept it. Unfortunately the only way some will see his righteousness because of their close mindedness is to face his judgement you were never meant to face. As for worship, you literally have no idea what worship is.(not trying to be mean, I apologize if it came off like that, just trying to help you)
stig gibbs evidence...... is key to understanding........ knowledge is an sprouted seed wisdom is insight unto the unknowable understanding is spiritual symbiosis SUFFER FOR THE TRUTH, IN THIS WAY SUFFERING BECOMES A VIRTUE AND LIKE TRUTH CAN NO LONGER OFFEND YOU. starting a little over 20 years ago many complete strangers would tell me i looked like george clooney. i basically ignored it, but there it was and still happens occasionally to this day. now i was married to my wife Elizabeth who passed away just over 6 years ago. Elizabeth was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and never started treatment. Elizabeth was on life support for approximately 6 weeks before we chose to set her free. i would visit her every day and read to her from the Bible always the same chapter : John 14 ... Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my fathers house are MANY MANSIONS. 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. fast forward 5 years and George Clooney has released a film titled The Descendants. if you are not familiar with the film it starts out where george and his family make a decision to terminate his wife who is on life support in a coma and her name is Elizabeth. one of the themes of the movie revolves around a massive estate in Hawaii.
He's not claiming it for himself. He simply clarified in the context of a metaphysics of his own. His metaphysics has greater explanatory power than what we accept at the moment. It was demonstrating that the data don't change but remain consistent under the new way of looking at things. Okay, the last sentence of mine was clumsy, the important thing is to understand the highest principle involved, in this case Quality, is undefined but knowable.
The heart of the issue I believe lies in the 'view from nowhere' perspective of science. Science intentionally removes the human frame of reference, it's then only one step to deny that the human frame of reference is any kind of reality, it's just subjective. Instead you are to look at objective facts and make a reality composed only of tangible measurable things. Not human experience.
Daniel Seven Amen brother!
***** that is not true. God was not invented 2000 years ago ignorant fool. You are the bible that is called "fool". Oh and i wonder how you look like, you really want to think that you came from a "monkey"? very sad....
*****
"Any sentence that starts with 'the bible says' automatically looses any credit for a rational argument or reason."
Really?
My 1st question to you is this:
How can you make such a rash comment when you have not even read the "Bible"?
My second question:
Forget about the personalities such as "Jesus", Moses, Abraham etc (with whom you seem to have problems) are you saying that the geographical and archaeological findings and the migration of the ancient peoples as described, make the "Bible" lose any credit for rational geographical and archaeological argument or reason?
Why? Because it is simply based on my 1st question to you!
.
***** "Your full of hot air Bruce."
How can that be? I am merely asking questions.
"Any credible scientist would be laughed right out of the room if they claimed the Bible was historically accurate."
Oh..... and a "credible" scientist is more knowledgeable than an acclaimed archaeologist and historian!!!! Hmmmm....so we don't need historians and archaeologists..... the so called evolution of science will do it all.
What has science got to do with the issue of this topic? I said nothing about science. The issue was the accuracy of the bible based on history and archaeology,
As if to suggest that science does not need the "services" of historians and archaeologists.
I am glad I still read the Holy Bible
Prof. John Lennox is like a light that shines in the dark. He is so warmhearted and wise and I cannot help but smile and feel happy everytime I see or hear him. Thank you so much, Prof. Lennox!
Praise Jesus!
Praise Mohammad
Praise Allah
Buddha is the way.
What a wonderful man John Lennox is! Humble and Sincere. My most sincere gratitude to the uploader of the video.
Loved Dr Lennox . Thort the other fellow ok but 4 me he talked a little bit too long
Unfortunately, Professor Lennox can't discern fairy tales, fictions, myths, and bs from facts.
Thanks from New Zealand. Lennox is a legend.
Agreed. He is one of the greatest minds out there imo. Made dawkins look foolish
Yes, he is a legend. I think whether or not he leads people to Christ thru his deep and intelligence answers (and I hope and honestly think he does), he solidifies my belief in the Holy Trinity. ❤
Dr. Lennox is an exceptional man. There is such compassion in his face when he smiles.
Half of the talks of his that I've watched I find myself thinking "This man should be a bishop".
Thank you Lord for John Lennox.
Man, Dr. Lennox is a wonderful man. 54:00 is when I start to really tear up. :)
@@mickymillersson4376 and on the day of judgment, your smirk will change to horror TRUTH IS TRUTH and death is an unwelcome reality check
Yeah, that sounds exactly like delusion.
I really missed something in this comment thread
@@smashexentertainment676 like your delusion that you came from a rock? Lol
I know God is real cos I experienced Him. Thank You Jesus for Your mercy.
Amen!
How did you experience him? Where you an altar boy?
@Starfox
Experiencing God by the person of Jesus Christ who by the death on the cross forgave my sins when I was still a sinner like you and the rest of humanity and was raised from the dead to give us eternal life and soon to be back to judge the dead and the living.
@PaulNStein
When a person was blind of his sin at that time he is blind and that's the reality of it. God bless!
It's said that believing in something you can't see is “Blind Faith"
And I say that Love is blind and yet, it's felt. The love of God is felt.
Hello Joseph, I can't see electricity but I know it exists because of what it does.
Christian Thomas the bible’s claim is proof enough and more reasonable than your claim that there is no God
Dr Lennox is a God sent prophet to help us in engaging with all kinds of atheists in our time. God bless him mightily
Don’t know now how many times I have watched this presentation but thank you once again Dr Lennox
Dr. Lennox is just awesome in his presentation of Christianity as the one true faith.~ d j alimo
what does travel have to do with anything? Do you mean that by traveling knowledge can be obtained? What is wrong with simply reading? I can travel to any place at any time to real or imagined.
And he's also awesome at making millions from the God thing
Amen!
+DwightShrute
Anything you do not understand, GODFUCKINGDIDIIT, that ignorant statement answers nothing. Your god explains nothing not even his own existence.
+Crane Zilla lol why you mad bro? can you please explain where all that hate is coming from using the scientific method?
Awesome lecture Sir. My notes full, I learnt a lot and I almost burst to tears at the end. You're indeed a blessing
Mmm, Nicely put
PLEASE, Go and Read this if you can, or have time:www.newtonproject.sussex.ac.uk/view/texts/normalized/NATP00121
In this treatise, Newton explains his philosophy of Nature, which is firmly grounded in experimental observation, but at the same time thoroughly God centered. Newton also puts forward an Intelligent Design argument..
***** Yes, I believe all of them apart from the last one....
>> "Do you believe God is white man living in the sky"
This statement is nothing more then a straw man argument and Ignorance, not only do you disparage philosophy, but also disparage sophisticated theology without even understanding it. Nice try tho... but no!
Freedom FROM Atheism Actually, according to the Bible, God does have human emotions and human like thoughts.
God is going to be God whether you believe in Him or not. In the end we will all stand before him, and it will be too late.
+Daniel Seven delusion much?!
@James Dare can you provide sturdy, irrefutable, empirical evidence that this god dude exists?! Yes/no?!
@James Dare 1. Its a chick then?! How do you know?
2. If it is sturdy, irrefutable, empirical evidence I would be forced to accept it smartypants! If your "evidence" is just allegorical, parabolical, mystical, biblical etc then yes, I will certainly reject it (as every reasonable and rational thinking person would do)
So whats it gonna be Murph?
th-cam.com/video/XtLvlaGJJEU/w-d-xo.html
peter renner Daniel Seven said the truth.
I love John! He walks with God.
Nonsense remains nonsense even when someone highly intelligent speaks it.
I love John Lennox, he's a very intelligent man
Yoshi 20 Yes he is.
Art 20 intelligent and wise.
tyowongndeso I agree, he's my favorite Christian apologetic today.
I can explain it to you, but I cannot understand it for you:
----- Birds in a cage think flying is a mental illness.
I tried to go to this and all the rooms including overflow were full; guess its about time I watch this completely.
***** Come down and lick the dust. !

Yes but first you ate the shit. Well YOU cooked it.
Zion Bound What will dust return to? Or do you believe dust is eternal?
In a day when so much immorality is rampant across Academia, Prof. John Lennox is a voice in the "wilderness" speaking truth and a new life to those who may seek a life at the Cross of Christ. Also his final remarks for Justice to the evil in the world that will occur before Christ! Amen!
Why are you so desperate to sound like a crazy person? ;-)
John lennox is outstanding 👍👍👍👍
Thanks again so good to hear these men bring the word of Christ alive .
You tell him not to assume God and other supernatural things as fact, yet you call them false. I cannot help but point out the hypocrisy in that statement, in that you are assuming God's nonexistence is a fact.
Indeed, atheist and I'll throw in academic think their beliefs trump the belief of others.
What a wonderfully civil discussion on such an important topic.
I enjoyed this very much. Thanks Veritas Forum :)
Science is bound in the truth of scripture. God is the author of both. There is an infinite journey in science to discover the all of his creation.
please disable or moderate comments...i.e...keep comments civil at all times.
John Lennox is great as always.
The Ford car analogy he uses around 8 minutes is very good
*"We don't [yet] know." Just because we do not NOW know is not a useful argument against ultimately knowing.*
Wow, this is a great discussion! Lennox and Lowenstein are great - we need more sincere dialogue like this!
Unfortunately many people want to separate God and Science. Science is simply the process of understanding to some degree all that God has created.
If that is that what your home schooling parents told you, then it must be true. ;-)
Lennox publically humiliated Dawkins (his own words) , and tore Hitch to shreds...
Anyone else????
Kraus perhaps??
Also wondering how you come to the conclusion that it is pseudo intellectualism that leads to statements like
“What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof.” sounds neither insincere or pretentious to me? Matter of fact, the opposite side of the coin there would be the pseudo intellectualism you speak of, yet seem to have trouble comprehending. If I make an unsubstantiated and non-testable claim, then insist others believe me, that sounds more within the realms of insincere and pretentious.
It was Lennox vs Dawkins.
Pretty much every debate ive seen with Lennox, lennox always comes out on top.
Theres WLC and Krauss, another great debate.

As a child I was completely convinced of the existence of fairies, I even built a home for them. In my heart I had no doubt and felt great joy that they lived nearby and slept soundly at night because I knew they would protect me. Does that mean fairies really exist?
he didn't mean it literally. he just meant the universe is complex and its hard to understand. There is much we don't know yet.
Thank you again, Dr. Lennox.

gotta love Lennox
Wow tk u for posting this interview, so enlightening n comforting.
This video was peaceful to my mind.
If finite man could understand an infinite God, he would not be God.
John Lennox looks amazing in pink.
Science proves GOD
Lucy[a three foot tall chimpanzee], peking man.. and on and on...
stillwill2215
If you think evolution is continually being proved wrong then you are way out of touch. Ask any scientist. There have been a few hoaxes but it really isn't "and so on and so on." They are relatively rare. There is a massive amount of evidence for evolution and if you think that most of it is a sham and is constantly being proved wrong then you must be reading mostly Christian based news.
English Channeled
Is evolution atheistic?
English Channeled
But you have to factor in the specifics.
Tell me please what is your theological answer to the children situation.
"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." -Aristotle.

LOVE is real and its not an emotion. Thought I'd respond to that question.
Cs Lewis was a atheist in the beginning..and became a true Christian after a lot of struggle.
Thank God for me to live to watch this video. Prof Lennox resembles Winston Churchill sometimes. I'm a believer in Christ already, but i pray to have Prof Lennox's intelligence and wisdom to preach and defend the Gospel in Jesus name. Amen!!!
Why does Jesus need a defense? And what makes you think that either of you are qualified? Did you get a diploma or something? ;-)
So you are saying that you became delusional on your own. Phew... at least your parents are off the hook, then. ;-)
this was a pleasure to watch
1. Biological awareness: Your basic senses, sight, hearing, touch etc
2. Social awareness: Group awareness, the 'subjective', empathy, compassion, religion, conformity/originality etc
"For who is able to defeat the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God."--1 John 5:5.

I love Mr John Lennox.
"how are you so sure it applies to everyone?"
I'm not sure I even understand what you mean. Why would an excellent explanation of human experience apply to everyone?
If God did not exist, we would not be here to question his existence.
Good one! And if God was not compassionate and merciful he would have vaporized billions of arrogant fools* a long time ago.
*BTW, when the Bible mentions fools, it is not talking about the cognitively disabled. Rather the morally disabled, able to understand but refusing to do so.
@@donblosser8720 "And if God was not compassionate and merciful he would have vaporized billions of arrogant fools* a long time ago."
Oh, you mean like that time when he drowned 99.999(9)% of every living thing in global flood?
"e says he does not have the answer to the problem of pain and suffering,"
Thats a surprise.
Pain is unavoidable in life, but suffering involves a decision.
Its rarely a direct decision, children usually suffer from decisions their parents made.
Atheists have a hard time reconciling this issue.
Theists are supposed to know the answer.
There is no spiritual growth without suffering.
@PeterOzanne
I'm curious by what you mean by that; could you explain the truth value neutrality of fables?
Well, then, we must also say Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, and indeed a vast amount of ancient knowledge was all made up by medieval scholars, because very often the only surviving copies of works we have by or about them come from the Middle Ages.
There is a science which examines manuscripts, and dates the original versions based on the contents of the copies, and purports the original contents based on the copies. There are hundreds of fragments and copies of the NT, many 1800 years old.
PT2 WHAT DO other animals possess that dont have language? And what do you count as language?
Is 'time' part of that physical reality of yours?
No kidding
Have you read the bible? These are the "words of the lord". Tell me please, why would the lord want to promote slavery?
Examples of slavery in the bible:
Leviticus 25:44-46 How to buy and sell slaves as livestock
Exodus 21:7-11 Sex slavery
Exodus 21:2-6 Treatment of Hebrew Slaves
Exodus 21:20-21 Beating? slaves
Let's not forget Leviticus 18:22 for homophobia or Ecclesiastes 7:26 for sexism.

As for worship, you literally have no idea what worship is.(not trying to be mean, I apologize if it came off like that, just trying to help you)
...so the choices are?... worship or burn.

starting a little over 20 years ago many complete strangers would tell me i looked like george clooney. i basically ignored it, but there it was and still happens occasionally to this day. now i was married to my wife Elizabeth who passed away just over 6 years ago. Elizabeth was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and never started treatment. Elizabeth was on life support for approximately 6 weeks before we chose to set her free.
i would visit her every day and read to her from the Bible
always the same chapter : John 14

14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

evidence is the key.
That would also entitle you to have evidence he doesn't exist. Any scientific evidence or formula it's not possible for Him to exist?
you have to reply to the person directly so we know who you are talking to.
I would be happy to take a stab at it. However, I must be missing the comment you're referring to. Perhaps you could copy it in a reply?
A crushing majority of historians (Christian or not) agree that JESUS is a historical figure.
Very good, John Lennox.
Not fishing.. just expressing an opinion,
which is exactly what you were doing in the first place I believe.
Not human experience.
i am not rewriting history, you are. giving the church credit that it does not deserve.
