Thank you, I need to know, when i checked by etabs for soft story check, it showed me that percentage is ok ( i.e >70%) ,so no soft story is as what i can conclude. Does that mean that the situation is ok in earthquick ?as the checked floor is basement floor ( parking lot) and no walls or stiffness materials are used to cover the perimeter area of the parking floor
Soft storey check is performed only to ensure that there is no drastic difference in stiffness between adjacent floor levels, which would lead to heavy concentrated forces at a particular diaphragm. Passing in a soft storey check doesn't mean that the situation is adequate for seismic loads completely.
Yes, there is a small difference. Soft storey is the one which the lateral stiffness is less than 70 percent of that in the storey above or less than 80 percent of the average lateral stiffness of the three storeys above. Weak storey is one in which the storey lateral strength is less than 80 percent of that in the storey above.
