I swear man I was so happy to see this pop up. These guys deserve all the fame in the world so watching people discover them is great and I've been waiting for you to stumble on them. Victor Wooten Amazing Grace solo from the DVD I sent you is a MUST. also Big Country and Hoedown
JAMEL!!! You got to it!!! Thanks a million bro, I’m happy to have shared this with you and the group! Much love ❤️✌🏻 And yeah people do call me BJ. Too many Brians!!! 😂😂😂
Did you just request the band or did you also request this specific video? I ask because when I saw the title I knew Jamel would trip over Future Man and his drumitar but they did not even show him once with the instrument on this song, Jamel needs to re-visit the group to check it out.
@@eurofritz4617 I requested this video because of the quality audio/video and also wanted to surprise him with that Vic Wooten solo. I was also disappointed that Futureman did not get his turn to shine in this video, but don't worry I have a feeling Jamel ain't done with them just yet.
One of the most astounding things I have ever seen in a concert was Victor Wooten and Bela Fleck exchanging instruments. Bela played the bass guitar like a banjo, and Victor played the banjo like a bass. Sounds weird, but it was awesome. FutureMan is one of a kind, and also a fine human being. Love Bela Fleck and The Flecktones! Thanks for this reaction video!
Victor is easily one of the top 5 bass players in the world, Bela is arguably the best banjo player, and Futureman (Victors brother) is beyond description. It’s a real shame they didn’t focus on Futureman a little bit, his synthax drumitar is amazing, you really have to see it to believe it. I’ve seen them live several times, you gotta find some more!
That group represents some of most of talented musicians you'll ever find. Each of them is amazing by themselves. Howard Levy, the harmonica player, is considered by most harmonica players I know to be in a class of his own. The harmonica isn't as flashy because it's so small, so it's hard to appreciate all he does on that thing, but he truly is an innovator of the instrument.
Saw them in like 1995 in Oswego, NY at an outdoor festival near the University. Great time! Speaking of tripping, I almost tripped over Bela. I had gone to concessions for a sandwich, and was picking my way, head down, thru the sea of blankets trying not to dump it on the blanket people. Unbeknownst to me, Bela was using a transmitter and had come out into the crowd. I looked up at some point because it "felt" like someone was there, and there he was - grinning and picking and boy was I embarrassed for a little while! Glad I didn't spill my food on him!

I have spent many evenings with this band and was definitely going to shows on this tour...these guys are so so top notch in the music world and they completely blew traditional bluegrass out of the water.i love traditional bluegrass but my heart is with new Grass.whoever requested this thank u..it brought back many good memories..and with this song a whole new genre of music awaits those who want to hear more music like this❤️
Jamel, thank you so much for presenting one of the best bass players on the planet! Victor is not only entertaining, but virtuosic. The harmonica player... are you kidding me? And then there is the incredible Béla Fleck. OMG, what I wouldn't give to see these guys live! Peace!
These guys are pretty incredible. I have seen them a few times and each time they have been fantastic! Super amazing and very talented! Intelligent, as well...Thank you Jamal. =)
I don't remember how I happened to first hear Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, but Sinister Minister has been my fave of theirs FOREVER. I couldn't believe it when I saw that you were reacting to it! Isn't that just the BEST? Such talent. Really lifts you up & makes you think about hope & possibilities. LOVE it. :)
Don’t know I missed this. So glad you gave this wonderful band a listen. Yes, Sinister Minister was the first song I heard from them, on the radio, around 1990. It’s always been their encore song. Was fortunate to see them live in New Orleans a number of times, at Tipitinas, House of Blues, and several times at the Jazz Fest. Their studio recordings are great, and their live performances were awesome.
Saw them live 3-4 times in early 90's. Victor Lamont Wooten is one of the best bass players ever! Find a bass Solo video to review, please. Future man ( on the drumitar synth) is Vic's brother.
My favorite number from my favorite band. The Sinister Minister is usually done as the encore. It is too bad that they rarely tour anymore. If they do resume touring, you must go see them! Bela Fleck is currently on tour with his bluegrass band, who are also amazing.
I took my wife to a Bela Fleck & the Flecktones concert for my birthday a few years back. She started to groove to some songs, then the meter changed and she thought 'what?' Finally she started watching me ... and noticed I wasn't breaking the groove. She understood me better after that night. Yes! Vic is AMAZING! The group recorded their earlier CDs "live" in studio so they could be certain the songs could be re-created live. Yup. Watch any version of "The West Country."
I first saw these guys on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson”. That’s how long they’ve been around. Then I saw them at a small club in Ann Arbor, got to meet them all after the show, get their autographs, Q&A with the audience. But they quickly started playing bigger venues. Victor Wooten is a bass player that all bass players point to as the best. Victor’s brother, Roy Wooten aka “Future Man” invented the Drumitar. Howard Levy plays a ton of instruments really well. We see him mostly on piano, but he’s a top harmonica player. And Béla is just a great banjo player who has really stretched the instrument. He’s married to another banjo player, Abigail Washburn. I liked her albums independently, then later learned they were dating, then married and popping kids. She lived in China for some years, and she sings some of her songs in mandarin. This band has lots of great songs & albums. My favorite is “Live Art”, with songs “Sunset Road”, “Stomping Ground” and “New South Africa”.
Great comment and nothing but facts! Love these guys too and had a similar experience when I saw them at a small gig on a college campus in the 90’s. Can’t say enough good things about these guys. I saw them when they were playing with one of their other members Jeff in place of Howard. All super great guys and Victor is beyond description as a bass player and a good human
Béla Anton Leoš Fleck is an American banjo player. An acclaimed virtuoso, he is an innovative and technically proficient pioneer and ambassador of the banjo, bringing the instrument from its bluegrass roots to jazz, classical, rock and various world music genres.
The man does not suck at bluegrass either, check out the collaboration with Bruce Hornsby and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on the Long Valley Road. Spot on bluegrass banjo.
One of the most unique and incredibly talented bands of all time. Howard Levy, the harmonica guy, left for several years and was replaced by a sax player who is now with The Dave Matthews Band, but I’m glad he’s back. He was always a big part of what made the band’s sound unique. If you wanna see probably the best performance of this with Victor Wooten COMPLETELY going to town on his bass and laying down one of the best solos of all time (and the band wearing some of the most dated fashions and looks imaginable- lots of mullets and mustaches and Zuba pants) check out the performance from the 1991 Jacksonville Jazz Festival.
Bela flecks musical documentary 'Throw down your heart', where he travels to Africa to discover the roots of the banjo, is one of the greatest music doccumentarys I have ever seen. I highly recomend.
Victor Wooten will go down in history as one of the best bassists ever. He has influenced a whole generation of bassists, just as your Jamerson, Jaco etc have. And as others have pointed out, super nice guy.
Bela Fleck absolutely reinvented the way to play banjo. I’ve been following him since he was with New Grass Revival in the early 70’s. This band has taken progressive “jazz grass” to a whole new level. The only other harmonica player I know that is as inventive as Howard Levy is Jason Ricci.
I saw these guys in the early 2000's at a festival. I was walking around the place and suddenly heard this crazy music coming from the main stage, and my friends and I went and watched the whole show mesmerized. We had never heard of them and we originally had plans to do other things at the time, but we stood there and had our faces melted by the talent these musicians were displaying. They ended that show with this song as well, and the people there went crazy for it.
Jamel, I've heard of Bela and the Flecktones for decades but never gave them a try till this video, and I have YOU to thank for that! So people are not just turning you onto to some killer jams, my brother, you are too! I thank you so much! Peace!
I'm so happy you're reacting to the great Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. I was lucky enough to see them when I was 17 (I'm 40 now). They were unbelievable. I was also able to meet Victor. I still have my ticket stub with his autograph. Absolutely fantasticly wonderful band. So happy to see you share them with your fans.
I had the honour and pleasure of seeing Bela Fleck play at a free "folk/blues" festival date in Italy maybe 7 or 8 years ago. After he and his partner had played their sets, they sat next to me as we watched Robyn Hitchcock. I couldn't ignore the fact so struck up a conversation. Lovely people, and amazing musicians.😊
This is proof that you're TRULY out to find ALL the good music! Not just rock, jam and other pop. You're going to LOOOOOVE you some Bela Fleck and the Flecktones!! Enjoy the heck out of this rabbit hole! :)
Bela produces my cousin's band, Che Apalache, they were nominated for a Grammy in 2020 cause Bela is great. Check them out, especially their song, Maria.
finally you've gotten to Bela. Every single person this guy plays with is a legitimate master at their instrument. They have many years of shows with a saxaphone player as well that you can certainly find as well. So glad you are getting to these folks.
I suggested this over a year ago! I'm So glad you finally got to it. I know Bela. He was friends with my parents. Truly one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet!
Victor Wooten is one of the great bass players to ever touch the instrument. Legend. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen all 5 of the Wooten brothers on the same stage.
I saw them perform on PBS at the outdoor Jacksonville Jazz Festival and was blown away by Victor. I recorded the whole show. When they came to Buffalo and performed in a small club I bought tickets with friends the day they were in sale. One of the best concerts I have ever seen.
When I told people you could mix banjo, slap bass, harmonica and whatever the other dude is playing into a jazz tinged salsa dance tune, they looked at me as if I lost my mind. I hadn't, but they did.
Man didn’t even pick up on Futerman playing an electronic drum that looked like a guitar. I almost cried watching Jamal have his epiphany. Those guys are phenomenal. ☮️❤️
I was at the Flecktones' second show ever and I knew they would eventually get the accolades they deserve. This song won a Grammy. These musician are considered the best at what they do. If you want to hear vocals you need to react to New Grass Revival at some point.
I'm so glad to see you react to these guys! I've seen them live many times and even met/talked with them on a few occasions. Not only are all of them virtuoso musicians but also are as genuine, nice and humble as can be. Ps. I wish the video gave more attention to Futureman (Victor's brother playing the drumitar).
So glad you got to Victor Wooten in your journey. One of my very, very, very small handful of truly top-tier bass players against whom all others are measured, and you won't find any top bass players who disagree with me, including Les, Geddy, etc. So, I've just gotta say - you've covered a lot of ground on your journey through music you've never heard before, but now that you've cracked open Bela Fleck, there is a whole giant world of funk and fusion that awaits - the music that musicians love to play! Buckle up!
I agree with all the other comments about him being a good human. Kind, humble, giving, generous. Check out what he did after the huge earthquake in Haiti some years back.
Victor Wooten............seen them at Bumbershoot 94 stood on the rail took many pictures like 4-5 ft away. Great show. Los Lobos @ the same stage. Oh yeah, did I mention VICTOR WOOTEN!!!
You need to check out Strength In Numbers. A short lived supergroup consisting of: Bela Fleck, banjo Sam Bush, mandolin Edgar Meyer, upright bass Mark O'Connor, fiddle Jerry Douglas, dobro Five masters of their instruments (some, more than one) and some amazing music.
I hope Bela gets back with the Flecktones. Since he married Abigail Washburn they have been doing more traditional banjo stuff. He and the Wooten brothers were always the core of the group, and they are amazing musicians. Jazz is hard. Really good jazz is a miracle.
If you're going to do another by Bela, try "The YeeHaw Factor". Also, a band Bela loved to jam with was Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit. I'd do "Dead Presidents" from their "Mirrors of Embarrassment" album. The first one's another instrumental but the second suggestion has lyrics. BTW, have you ever done anything by Eva Cassidy? If not, you really want to do that. She's beyond incredible. She had, literally, every possible gift a singer could have. Anything by her, she's pure perfection.
Now you're getting closer to my stuff Jamel! Bela Fleck is an ex-member of the band Newgrass Revival..... Which also contained my musical hero....Sam Bush. i.e. Recommended Sam Bush Band: 'Mahavishnu Mountain Boys' to be continued!
Heck yeah, buddy. Two of the most amazing musicians on the planet. The bass player Victor Wooten is a bad man....but he's humble and generous. Lucky to have hung with him on a few occasions. There is a great video of Bela and Billy Strings playing together. Even Billy strings looks at Bela Fleck in amazement.
Hey Jamel! Thanks again for reacting to these guys. I have watched this reaction sooo many times lol. It was all worth it when you bout fell out of your chair in amazement when Victor spun that thing around!!!
I commend you for highlighting artists that other "reaction" you tubers don't touch on. Great music is just that, great music. With that being said, I would love you to react to "Crack The Sky" a band that has been around since the mid seventies and has never gotten the recognition they deserve. I recommend "Nuclear Apathy" for your approval.
Glad you found Bela Fleck! I've been a big fan ever since he joined New Grass Revival. NGR transformed bluegrass music. I've never seen them on any reaction video, but if you want to be wowed by virtuoso musicians, check out their song "Seven by Seven".
Man, I got to see the Flecktones play two shows in the Basement in Sydney Australia back in 2007. Still to this day, those shows blew my mind. I got to meet them all after the shows, and they could not have been any nicer. I still have those photo's.
Branford Marsalis stated after playing with them at Lonesome Pine Specials, "... most of all the other groups out there playing jazz/ fusion are half baKed."
Victor Wooten is a monster. Too bad many us were raised on the very limited FM radio... we all missed out on so much talent...I'm grateful for the internet opening my ears to new music
Victor is unrivaled and Les wishes he could keep up. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love Les, seen everything he's done live but Victor is an alien with super human powers that can't be matched.

A short lived supergroup consisting of:
Bela Fleck, banjo
Sam Bush, mandolin
Edgar Meyer, upright bass
Mark O'Connor, fiddle
Jerry Douglas, dobro
Five masters of their instruments (some, more than one) and some amazing music.
I have seen this band a few times, phenomenal. I met Bela and Futureman! Great guys
Fleckin' awesome performance. And you are the best Jamel.
So glad you did this one, Jamal!
Invite your brothers for your next Bela Fleck reaction. Anything your select will be good.
Bela Fleck is a SICK banjo player. Try to find some of his bluegrass stuff from when he was in New Grass Revival; he shreds!
I did a search for no reason and you have the first reaction to pop up! Bella is amazing!
Victor Wooten is one of the most impressive bass players, ever, period. He and Thundercat are my two favorites since Claypool.
That harmonica is awesome! They are darn impressive all the way around!
Finally breaching the world of Jazz - whooot!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
You've just witnessed the greatness that is Victor Wooten.
YES. Everyone in this band is awesome. Bela is like no one else on banjo, and Victor is probably my favorite bassist other than Les.
That was Bela plying banjo on the Harder They Come you did the other day.
