I really appreciate and love that you make this such a family affair! You set a great example for all men your age on how to be a Dad and Husband! Kudos to you for a job well done!
As the only daughter in my siblings, I remembered helping my late dad overhauled an 80's Subaru and some old Toyotas engine. I remembered helping him grinding the valve using some stick with suction cup on the stick and some weird paste, and helping him putting back that small metal thing while he pushing down the valve spring, and many more. I learnt a lot about car, especially those old carburetted cars. He passed away from colon Ca in 2019. Now I'm restoring his 1989 1.3 carburetted Lancer with the complicated Aisan carb on it, to honour his memories. What a wonderful dad you are. Seeing your videos makes me missed my dad. Lovely family you have there. Greeting from Malaysia.
Your family is lucky to have a father like you. My dad would never have let me help with projects like this. He was more interested in yelling at me and slapping me around when I was a kid. All my automotive knowledge is self taught. I'll be taking a step away from the 70s and 80s cars in the spring and will be starting on a 1939 Cadillac LaSalle. Best wishes to you all.
Love the Malibu's. I had a 1983 2 dr and it was an awesome car. I put 248,000 miles before I sold it and she still was running well. Very reliable and that 305 got really good gas milage as long as you kept your foot off the floor.
Oh, the rear windows. Some people say G bodies don't have rear windows that don't roll down for cost reasons. Some say it allowed a larger pane of glass that could not have rolled down into the door because of the shorter wheel base. I've also heard that they saved space by not having a regulator mechanism in the door which allowed that unique "concave" door panel design that allowed them to advertise it having more interior space that the previous generation. I suppose all could be true. I've owned them, and never really cared, all had working AC and the flip out rear window actually flowed air nicely, too.
A combination of things: cost, "safety" (for a time windows in GM cars rolled down about half-way to 3/4 of the way to prevent passengers from "falling out",) and also if you think about it, doing so would "force" the buyer to buy AC. Salesman, "You know those back windows don't roll down, safety feature. Going to get hot in there without AC". Buyer, "Better order it with AC". Salesman inside: "Cha Ching, another $500+ for AC"..
The whole issue gets beat to death. First, the only reason the GM of the era did anything was to save money. Having fixed glass obviates the need for window regulators. The 1978 cars were a lot smaller than the previous generation and the lack of window hardware allowed the arm rests to be recessed, making the hip measurement seem wider but in reality it was moot. In the USA it was not that much of an issue but in Canada it was, because most of the Malibu's sold in Canada at the time didn't have a/c. Whatever the the reason, GM didn't do it in any other car ever again.
@@Sleeperdude if I had a old Malibu it would be my everyday driver I would just drive it and enjoy it but that’s me my name is kyle it’s nice to meet you I’m awe-so a Chrysler fan I like the 1975 Chrysler Newport my grandpa had one when I was a kid as will it was what I consider fancy but not for everybody it was one of my favorite cars to ride in as a kid so was moms Malibu those were always my 2 favorite cars and I miss riding in them they were always smooth rides going down the road they just don’t make cars like they used to classic cars are better is how I feel but that’s my opinion
One good thing about cars at that time. The trim was mostly glued on so it was often easier to just remove it all if some is missing than to find and replace it. Little or no holes to fill.
Great video. My family owned a taxi company when these cars were new and everything you say about GM is true. The entire SBC family is interchangeable. Stuff like brake pads were the same for eons and thus dirt cheap. Want a cheap horsepower upgrade for your Malibu? Well, an LS crate engine will bolt up right up for less than the price of a good rebuild.
The explanation that General Motors gave for the rear windows that didn’t roll down on that era G body four door sedans was that there would have only been room for a regulator that would allow the window to lower between two and three inches due to safety bracing contained within the door. We had a 1982 Pontiac Bonneville G four door and it’s rear vent lanes were electrically controlled as part of the power window package.
I had the wagon version. My windows went down. I had a lot of fun with that car. A lot of tickets too. It was only mildly hopped up. Shaved heads and punched 60 over with a 4speed.
The dipstick tube should be on the driver's side below the number 5 cylinder. You should be able to see the " pocket " on the oil pan right by the filter. That circular shaped plug in the back by the distributor should connect to the oil sending unit down on the rear " China wall ". Great videos and it is nice to see a real down home Christian family working together.
I have a '78 Cutlass that was off the road for a similar amount of time, trees growing out of the bumpers and all, it actually had great front brakes when I got it going, I actually drove it around like that for a little while, the rears didn't work because of a plugged brake hose. I threw some new brake hoses on it and new wheel cylinders, but then the master went out while bleeding the brakes, so I swapped that and it's been fine since. Its actually my fair weather daily, the t-top and rusty roof leaks make it unpleasant in inclement weather 😂
I got my 2nd car in late 1972 when I was a junior in high school - it was a 1969 Chevy wagon with the 300hp 350 and a quadrajet. For such a big beast it moved pretty well. And I got it up to 112 mph with the AC on (and bald tires).

Love the videos and the Family involvement, as well as bringing these cars back to life because once their gone their gone. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend and God bless
My husband built a 454 for his 68 Chevelle and was Soo excited when he got it put in the car that he forgot to put oil in it. Thank God he remembered it the minute it fired up so he shut it down and filled it up with oil and fortunately it didn't hurt the engine.
The reason for the big heater/ac box under the hood was the design of the dashboard. In order to recess the dash and make it smaller to increase interior passenger seating room. To give more knee and leg room, the dash panel was moved closer to the windshield. For their size, these cars have quite a bit of interior room. When they migrated to front wheel drive later on, the space the transmission, driveline and rear drive axle was added to the interior space.
The round, black wire is for the oil sending unit just below the distributor on the driver's side, back of the block. The other white plug looks like the windshield wiper drive motor supply with washer and intermittent controller..... but I could be wrong. The lack of rear window regulators was a safety feature for child protection. The "wing windows" was a vent. Many cars limited the level of, or eliminated altogether, the rear windows going down. The 305 Quadra jet carb started at 500 CFM and went up to 600 CFM. (I would pull the numbers off the block to verify the CID) Loving family involvement.... I am a new sub! Thanks for taking me back to the old Chevy's
I really enjoyed this video Sleeperdude with the family involved in getting the Malibu running. And then Rocky inspecting the vehicle even before its fully off the trailer. Rocky is such an amazing Goat he really loves to check things out and always seems to be hungry. I look forward to your videos some of the best on You Tube IMO. Best wishes to you and your family, including all the animals. Be safe out there.
The rear vent windows are because the rear windows don't roll down! You have extra armrest room for 3 people in the back in the doors, but they gave up the roll down window....so most of these cars have air conditioning too. This design replaced the 1977 Chevelle and Malibu....and since it was smaller, they had to still try to fit three people in the back seat.....so they could say 6 passengers....so the designed of the armrest gave more width for people.....but not enough room for the window roll down mechanism
I love the way you take time to teach your kids what you know, i had a very similar time with my stepdad when i was growing up. He made sure to teach me what he knew about older engines, mostly motorcycle engines. I wish i had kids i could of passed my knowledge onto. Thank you and your family for all the time and effort making these videos, keep up the hard work. Sending love to your entire family all the way from England
The reason why they didn’t roll down in the back is because it was a “cost saving measure” that didn’t go over to well with customers. I was told the vent windows in the back were added just a few years after customer complaints about ventilation on hot summer days if the A/C broke. The vent window didn’t go over to well either. So then they began to add rolling windows in the economy version again to satisfy GM’s customers. I don’t know for a fact but that is what i was told bu someone who knows those 80s cars.
I brought a three speed 4 barrel 1978 chevy Malibu 2 door in 1981 in VA. And drove it all the way back ti California. Great car, I wish I still had it. :(
I used to have a Ford Escort Panel van used to get 10 seconds of air over a railway crossing out of Narracoort ,South Australia ,and used to jump our TORANA, and HZ station wagon, all the best to you all
I'd love to have a Malibu, but they're priced out of my price range now. My brother had a pretty nice 2 door when we were kids, back before they were as desirable and had a pretty nice wagon a few years ago. I actually saw a factory manual wagon on marketplace a little while ago, but the price was way up there and they knew what they had. The "Iraqi taxi" Malibus they sold in Canada were pretty cool too, great base for a hot rod sleeper, you could make some along those lines with that 4 door
Growing up, I dug out my grandparents' 76 Chevy Chevette from the pasture and got it running. A decade later, I got their '83 Chevette. Funny story about the Ford Aerostar in the beginning of the video. We had one ('92) for a hot minute in the early 2000's after we got rid of our '93 Taurus wagon. That Aerostar is now a redneck deer stand in the woods. 😂 What a time to be alive. 😂 Thanks for another great video, guys!
Sorry for this comment but Gentry trucking here on TH-cam had the CPS called on him for his son driving. It's total BS as I was raised in Loudon county and have been driving tractors since I was around 5. Driving cars for over 40 years cause that is how things were done but these morons on here will call on you and say Child Endangerment. As a 48 year old grandpa I approve of your munskin driving! Job well done sir!!
Built a very nice engine and put in one of these back in the late 90’s. Got it completely done one fine night and decided to run it right down the street to show my buddy and burned it to the ground! Forgot to tighten the fuel line and forgot the fire extinguisher at home by the time I ran two blocks it was burned completely down. Tighten the fuel lines then check again next time before running it lol nice job guys
my brother in law has an 81 wagon in mint condition with a rare 267cu.in monza motor with 307 heads from the factory. add a 4 barrel & cam does 13 second quarters. great car.
I had a 79 4 door sedan with the 267 bored 40 over 327 heads ram horns lunati cam and a 400 crank and made it into a baby stroker pulling around 420 HP to the ground and close to 500 at the crank
Malibu's are my favorite g body. They are getting rare both 2 door and 4 door. That 4 door needs a nice little 406 sbc with a powerglide. Perfect sleeper car. Good find on that one.
My cutlass 4 door I used to have around the same year as your Malibu was the exact same way with the windows that didn't roll down and the little smoker window
It had a V6 3.8 with the crap transmission I put a 350 turbo transmission in it. With Oldsmobile it has to be an Oldsmobile transmission if I remember right it has dip in the top of the transmission unlike chevy.
Congrats to Ralphie for wearing gloves on the carb. agree Malibu with two doors is better. i'm worry about Rocky being out and running into the car. good cleaning outside/inside, it would be a good car to go to town in. lv ur videos. no puppy cam.
I read that GM screwed up the design for the 80's version. There is no room in the door for the glass and the regulator to go. That is why the put the push out visor windows in the back.
There was a police version of this model in 1979 after the Nova police was cancelled. 350 small block, upgraded brakes and suspension and front buckets. They served us well
You know, vicegrip took a 307 V8. Put on a 500 buck pair of Chinese HO heads. A high-rise manifold from a 69' camaro and a suitable 4 barrel. All bolted to the original, unrebuilt block and squeezed almost 300hp out of it. Your car would make an interesting sleeper.
Good video for showing younger kids the ins & outs about older cars. Most kids these days don't know anything about non-fuel injected engines. They are more interested in video games & that stuff. It's real good to get all the family in the video, even the grandad. Looks like It was real fun driving that old car again!!
Keep up the good work guys - really enjoy the show! Might even try some vienna’s - already am an RC lover! Oh yeah I remember when these cars came out and everyone was like “the back windows don’t roll down 🤪 how cheap!” Needless to say I do not remember any other body style that they tried that cost saving trick on.
This just popped up on my timeline and I’m glad it did….love the content from the beginning to the very end!!! It wasn’t even necessarily the car but the bond he has with his family even had pops out there wow!! Miss those days with my dad 💯💯💯🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
We had a wagon when I was a kid for 16 years too. Was a reliable car. When dad sold it it had 186,000 miles on it. Someone locally bought it. Since dad sold it, we have seen it still on the road many times. Last week, I pulled up next to it at a stop light. It's still going, and each time I see it I think "That's dad's old Chevy." Dad even said he never should have sold it after seeing it 25 years later.
The rear windows in the rear don't roll down because there is no room in the door for the glass. The vent windows were put in to "keep the public happy".
Your son should try cleaning in inside of the car and become a detailer it is cool to see your work when the car is done. Iam a car detailer for 27 years . I still like cleaning my car .
Man i watch u guys.. I get so jealous!! I wish my family was doing stuff like that wen I was a kid... LOVE you guys!! Keep up the good work! Deff one of my favorite channels!!!
I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the comments but these Malibu Classic's, as they were called, were used by many local Police Departments as their cruisers. They were equipped with the 305 or the 350 small block, 4bbl carburetors, posi traction rear ends and heavier suspensions. They were a formidable vehicle and for the most part were hard to out run with the HP to weight ratio it had. I did a few ride alongs with my local PD back in the 80's and these were the vehicles they had at the time. I would love to get my hand on one now but they are really cost prohibitive now days., even in that shape it will still cost more than usual because people now know what they have.
First start now that’s a Chevy small block for ya there. This would be a good flip for resale or keep. For a moment there it sounded like it had aftermarket camshaft but that’s probably the carburetor. Do the brakes delete the catalyst converter and run a nice sounding muffler. Those 305 have nice torque up to 4500 rpm and decent power. This would make a nice sleeper here. Shhhhhhh. Stuff the big block in here and a ford 9inch diff.
Only if you are on Ventura Highway. (Desert don't know yer name) Looks like a 50,000 psi fuel pump. You should get that woodworker family to make you a decent jump for cars. I bet Rocky would like a can of dip....Copey.
Love those old Malibus! The "no roll" down rear windows might be part of the police package, some had it. If it says "certified" on the speedometer then it's a police package. Keep up the awesome content!! 👍🏁 New subscriber here! I came over from Hot Rod Hoarder's channel. 😎
Mom had a 79 Malabu with the V-6. Getting to the rear plugs on both banks, was best achieved under the wheel-wells. I liked that car much better than the 88 Escort that replaced it.

Thank you
Rocky just cracks me up when he does that. He’s not camera shy at all.
He’s soo nosey
First time I seen this channel. Loved it. What a great father and family.
Thank you I appreciate it
I had an 83 four door with the little v6. It was pretty peppy, I should have never sold it.
That’s cool
Love the videos and the Family involvement, as well as bringing these cars back to life because once their gone their gone. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend and God bless
Thank you
Thank you
My husband built a 454 for his 68 Chevelle and was Soo excited when he got it put in the car that he forgot to put oil in it.
Ok interesting
Omg!!! I had an 81 cutlass supreme with a built 355 and a 350 turbo with shift kit when I was 18...1 wheel peel though lol..loved that car so much!♥️
That’s great
Filling the new oil filter with MMO is a really good idea, it's really good for sticky lifters and is thin enough to wash the old oil away
I agree
The round, black wire is for the oil sending unit just below the distributor on the driver's side, back of the block. The other white plug looks like the windshield wiper drive motor supply with washer and intermittent controller..... but I could be wrong.
The lack of rear window regulators was a safety feature for child protection. The "wing windows" was a vent. Many cars limited the level of, or eliminated altogether, the rear windows going down.
The 305 Quadra jet carb started at 500 CFM and went up to 600 CFM. (I would pull the numbers off the block to verify the CID)
Loving family involvement.... I am a new sub! Thanks for taking me back to the old Chevy's
Ok thank you for all the good information and thanks for subscribing
Nice will it run video, and the drive way jumps with the kids and Mom filming was priceless.
Thank you we had fun
I think the back windows don't roll down that's what's the vents are for, the wagons have them too
Ok thank you
I had 78 Malibu sedan, 2 tone blue, 305 v8. Great car and it jumped ! Hit a deer when it had 268,000 km - killed the deer - killed the car.
That’s stinks
I had a 1981 Malibu with the V6 and 3 speed on the floor. It was a crazy car with the manual.
That would be fun
Rocky just wanted to help.😂😂😂 Great job getting the kids involved!
He’s into everything thank you
Its great seeing you teach your son and daughter help you good job Dad
Thank you
Me and my boys love watching your channel. Thanks for the family friendly content!
Thank you
My mom used to have one in a wagon form. Loved that thing!!!!!
I wish mine was a wagon
I really enjoyed this video Sleeperdude with the family involved in getting the Malibu running. And then Rocky inspecting the vehicle even before its fully off the trailer. Rocky is such an amazing Goat he really loves to check things out and always seems to be hungry. I look forward to your videos some of the best on You Tube IMO. Best wishes to you and your family, including all the animals. Be safe out there.
He really is the nosiest animal ever and he acts like he’s a dog, thanks for watching
Ok thank you for letting me know
Great content You gotta love how Ralphie fits under the hood That model was used in police vehicles so no roll down window might be a feature
Ok thanks
I love the way you take time to teach your kids what you know, i had a very similar time with my stepdad when i was growing up. He made sure to teach me what he knew about older engines, mostly motorcycle engines. I wish i had kids i could of passed my knowledge onto. Thank you and your family for all the time and effort making these videos, keep up the hard work. Sending love to your entire family all the way from England
That is awesome!
Yeah I think your right. Thank you
I brought a three speed 4 barrel 1978 chevy Malibu 2 door in 1981 in VA. And drove it all the way back ti California. Great car, I wish I still had it. :(
Yeah for sure
Old Chevys never let you down They consider for 30 years and start right now
That’s great
😂❤
I used to have a Ford Escort Panel van used to get 10 seconds of air over a railway crossing out of Narracoort ,South Australia ,and used to jump our TORANA, and HZ station wagon, all the best to you all
That’s great I bet that was fun
I'd love to have a Malibu, but they're priced out of my price range now. My brother had a pretty nice 2 door when we were kids, back before they were as desirable and had a pretty nice wagon a few years ago. I actually saw a factory manual wagon on marketplace a little while ago, but the price was way up there and they knew what they had.
The "Iraqi taxi" Malibus they sold in Canada were pretty cool too, great base for a hot rod sleeper, you could make some along those lines with that 4 door
Yes love the wagons
yes my late brother being a chevy fan had a malibu wagon with a 4 spd on the floor that thing was a blast to drive and it was very rare to see one.
@@Sleeperdude i'm swapping my 83' malibu wagon to a 350 vortec with a 5 speed
Growing up, I dug out my grandparents' 76 Chevy Chevette from the pasture and got it running. A decade later, I got their '83 Chevette. Funny story about the Ford Aerostar in the beginning of the video. We had one ('92) for a hot minute in the early 2000's after we got rid of our '93 Taurus wagon. That Aerostar is now a redneck deer stand in the woods. 😂 What a time to be alive. 😂 Thanks for another great video, guys!
That’s funny
Great video. This was my first car at 16. Mine was a 2 door with the 267 V8.
That’s funny
How about taking that V8 out, overhauling it, painting it, and putting it in the rambler? Make it a show car. :)
The rambler would be cool with a v8
Sorry for this comment but Gentry trucking here on TH-cam had the CPS called on him for his son driving. It's total BS as I was raised in Loudon county and have been driving tractors since I was around 5. Driving cars for over 40 years cause that is how things were done but these morons on here will call on you and say Child Endangerment. As a 48 year old grandpa I approve of your munskin driving! Job well done sir!!
Thank you I appreciate it
@@Sleeperdude we take care of our local boys and their kids now that's how we was raised.
Oh no!!! That’s terrible. Thanks for watching
The Malibu would be a great daily. Sounds great👍I love this channel.
Yes it would thank you
my brother in law has an 81 wagon in mint condition with a rare 267cu.in monza motor with 307 heads from the factory. add a 4 barrel & cam does 13 second quarters. great car.
That’s great
I had a 79 4 door sedan with the 267 bored 40 over 327 heads ram horns lunati cam and a 400 crank and made it into a baby stroker pulling around 420 HP to the ground and close to 500 at the crank
I have never seen that year with a quadrajet on it. You scored.
Yeah not sure that it originally came on the car
Malibu's are my favorite g body. They are getting rare both 2 door and 4 door. That 4 door needs a nice little 406 sbc with a powerglide. Perfect sleeper car. Good find on that one.
That would be cool
My cutlass 4 door I used to have around the same year as your Malibu was the exact same way with the windows that didn't roll down and the little smoker window
It had a V6 3.8 with the crap transmission I put a 350 turbo transmission in it. With Oldsmobile it has to be an Oldsmobile transmission if I remember right it has dip in the top of the transmission unlike chevy.
Oh wow that’s cool
Congrats to Ralphie for wearing gloves on the carb. agree Malibu with two doors is better.
i'm worry about Rocky being out and running into the car. good cleaning outside/inside, it would be a good
car to go to town in. lv ur videos. no puppy cam.
Thank you I’m glad you liked it all the puppies are gone to their new homes now
I read that GM screwed up the design for the 80's version. There is no room in the door for the glass and the regulator to go. That is why the put the push out visor windows in the back.
Ok thank you
There was a police version of this model in 1979 after the Nova police was cancelled. 350 small block, upgraded brakes and suspension and front buckets. They served us well
That’s awesome
The squarer the car the better. Love them.
Yes sir
You know, vicegrip took a 307 V8. Put on a 500 buck pair of Chinese HO heads. A high-rise manifold from a 69' camaro and a suitable 4 barrel. All bolted to the original, unrebuilt block and squeezed almost 300hp out of it. Your car would make an interesting sleeper.
That would be cool
I had a 79 4 Dr. It had the 305 H O. If the intake is factory aluminum its a H O. Also if you have the ID tag on the core support it will say 305 H O.
Also the rear windows didn't go down as a safety feature. That's why they had the wing windows.
Ok thank you
Yes sir
It's nice to have a family that's willing to help and learn !
Yes for sure
Another Awesome one guys I was crying laughing at the end with jumps So much fun for $500 Thank you 👏⭐
Thank you we had fun
That’s funny thank you for watching
This just popped up on my timeline and I’m glad it did….love the content from the beginning to the very end!!! It wasn’t even necessarily the car but the bond he has with his family even had pops out there wow!! Miss those days with my dad 💯💯💯🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Thank you I appreciate it
@@Sleeperdude yessir 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
410 Mercury FE don't see them anymore.
Yeah you dont
We had one of these in a 2 door for 16 years as a kid.
Awesome video... excited to see you do more work to this Chevy Malibu.....👍👍
Thank you
Glad you saved this Malibu. Growing up one my neighbors had Malibu station wagon.
Thank you
GM designed rear windows to not roll down as an cost cutting measure.
That’s crazy
The rear windows in the rear don't roll down because there is no room in the door for the glass. The vent windows were put in to "keep the public happy".
Ok interesting
The reason they did the wing windows on the back doors is those cars the back windows would not roll down
That’s crazy
Your son should try cleaning in inside of the car and become a detailer it is cool to see your work when the car is done. Iam a car detailer for 27 years . I still like cleaning my car .
Yeah I can’t wait to start cleaning it
Man i watch u guys.. I get so jealous!! I wish my family was doing stuff like that wen I was a kid... LOVE you guys!! Keep up the good work! Deff one of my favorite channels!!!
Thank you man
@@Sleeperdude keep teaching the kids dude I think that's the best part of the whole show!!
I bet those were fun
@@Sleeperdude They were lots' of fun. I am wanting a Malibu from the area but they expensive.
Yeah your probably right
..I don't think I would want to do a brakes delete...😄
Best part of the video was you and your son going over the hump. Those are great fun memories. Good fix. Can’t wait to see the progress.
Good deal dude! Love seeing these revivals. The' only thing that would have been better is if it was a wagon 👍
Yes your right !!!
Only if you are on Ventura Highway. (Desert don't know yer name) Looks like a 50,000 psi fuel pump. You should get that woodworker family to make you a decent jump for cars. I bet Rocky would like a can of dip....Copey.
Facts
Could the rear windows not rolling down be the start of safety feature? After that they went to only role down half way. Not sure though.
Yeah I think it is a safety feature
Truly enjoy watching the kids getting involved..my oldest son helps me on my Ole 85 ranger sas full size..👌
That’s awesome
Love those old Malibus! The "no roll" down rear windows might be part of the police package, some had it. If it says "certified" on the speedometer then it's a police package. Keep up the awesome content!! 👍🏁 New subscriber here! I came over from Hot Rod Hoarder's channel. 😎
Ok thanks for the info, and thanks for checking my channel out
Mom had a 79 Malabu with the V-6. Getting to the rear plugs on both banks, was best achieved under the wheel-wells. I liked that car much better than the 88 Escort that replaced it.
@@jeromebreeding3302 Ya can’t replace a Chevy with a Ford. That’s just not right.
@@ralphkramden2089 Yes you can, do if you on the honey-mooners !
