- @eyedress is the alias of Filipino artist Idris Vicuña, formerly lead guitarist of psychedelic indie/noise-pop band Bee Eyes. Born in 1990 in the city of Makati, Philippines, Vicuña relocated to the US with his family at the age of 6. He was raised in Phoenix, Arizona before moving to San Clemente, California at the age of 13, where he started playing bass in a Crass-influenced crust-punk band. Eyedress’ fourth album Mulholland Drive is the latest evolution of the Filipino musician’s unique sound. Following his 2020 breakthrough Let’s Skip To The Wedding, which introduced global hits Jealous and Romantic Lover, the new record features collaborations with some of his favorite artists (King Krule, DāM-FunK, Triathalon, Vex Ruffin and more), while staying true to his vision.
Matt Sweeney, host of Guitar Moves, is an NYC based producer (Joanna Sternberg “I’ve Got Me”) and composer (Superwolves, Chavez, Red Dead Redemption 2). His guitar playing can be heard on records by Adele, Johnny Cash, Endless Boogie, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, The Desert Sessions, Iggy Pop, Tinariwen.

thank u matt much love & respect for havin me on the greatest guitar show of all time 🖤🎸🤙🏼🤘🏼✌🏼
I’m picking the guitar right now, You’re the man dude
gotta get your boy mac demarco on here next @eyedress @guitar moves
Just heard you for the first time, now I am hooked. I have a lot of catching up to do. Love what you do...very inspiring.
YOU INSPIRED ME TO PLAY GUITAR AND GO SKATIN MOREE🙏🙏✊🤘
You are a great inspiration to me. A little color in a gray boring world❤
This approach to music and guitar is massively underrepresented and under appreciated. The goal is to maintain the childlike magical fascination you had with music when you decided you wanted to start playing guitar. Losing that to get a bunch of technique is a very bad deal.
I would absolutely do ANYTHING for an episode with Mk.gee.
He’s next up
I genuinely don't understand his appeal. To each their own, but it just sounds/feels like vaguely reverbed/chorus-y guitar textures with autotuned/Post Malone-ish vocals? Sure, it's "kinda different" but it's almost like combining kiwi and coriander, to me.
It's nice that it upkeeps the general interest in Guitar music, but as far as genuine contribution, I'm seemingly missing the substantial appeal it supposedly deserves.
@@dpclerks09 try learning one of his songs on guitar
Yea I’m no guitar pro but he is doing things with his guitar that no one else is doing his records don’t sound like anybody else’s, it’s the obscurity of the sound & the way his songs are structured that pulls me in & the 80’s sound is chef’s kiss. I’m not very knowledgeable on song writing neither but the lyrics are like stream of consciousness & his writing process must feel organic I assume, Alesis is my favorite one lyric wise it’s catchy as fuck
@samthomas1360 steady on chap, he's a decent player but if you think he's phenomenal you should probably broaden your listening.
Now his guitar TONE on the other hand...very fresh, at least to me. He's really on to something with the gated reverb especially he's extended the dynamic range allowing for more expressive playing
We are getting to a point where technically skilled guitarists are becoming a dime a dozen, so hearing someone who just plays with feel and instinct is quite refreshing. Really dig eyedress's whole musical philosophy. Keep rocking, dudes.
This was a great episode!! You gotta do one with Alex G sometime, I feel like he'd have a lot of similar things to share
Second this! Alex g would be amazing
the way guitarists talk to each other while trying to show each other riffs is unmatched "so its like" *proceeds to play the riff again
bro you gotta get mac demarco on this show, he is one of the most talented musicians rn and his guitar skills are so awesome. would be one of the best episodes on here!
It always improves my day when a new guitar moves video drops. As always this was awesome. Thanks for introducing me to Eyedress!
Smoked a blunt with eyedress in dallas in like 2018! Real ass dude.
I got goosebumps reading this . I’m happy for you man .!!! Hopefully I get the chance to do the same ❤
Hell hyped for you on this
as a new guitar player it is refreshing to see this approach to making music. It's not overtly complex, rather just a fun time and then next thing you know you've got a song. Ngl, this has given me a different view on jamming with my friends because I tend to be the follower instead of a creator. And this helped change my view of what is 'acceptable' when in reality music is just to have fun
It’s crazy when you find out that there’s someone who approaches guitar the EXACT same way you do. Just based on his influences, I already feel like I’m best friends with this dude.
im so glad youre making these again!
thank you for this video . i really appreciate the opportunity to see and listen to eyedress talk about music . Just the music . play by ear / self taught players and gear heads really love this video .
Awesome show, great to be introduced to this music (& Marcus King too, previously). If you ever get the chance, Hayden Pedigo is a young guitarist / artist from Amarillo, Texas, that I think you'd get a kick out of. Multi-talented and with a good sense of humour. His recent album, Happiest Days I Ever Ignored is a great one, and I think there's a really nice video of him playing it solo fingerstyle on a 3 humbucker equipped Telecaster. Think it might have been a Tiny Desk concert, he played it like that.
Yes! Hayden rules, and has a unique gift for storytelling through instrumental Guitar Music!❤
Long time fan of his and puts out workout on a continuous basis. Glad to see you embracing all forms of guitar players
Would love to see an episode with Mark Speer/Laura Lee
just found this channel from the marcus king video, and it is awesome to see a host so genuinely interested and curious in what their guest is playing, how they are playing it, and just what they are doing in general. Reminds me of Sean Evans with his eagerness and investment into his guest.
Another great episode. Now we need a Guitar Moves with Mary Halverson, please.
Great episode, need more newer artists and non shredder types. Interesting to hear how they think compared to others
what a chill dude. Never related so much with another artist. his approach to making music to the self criticism after performance hits home. Don't need to know theory to be a musician. it comes from the soul. Ive been told im not a musician cause I sample sometimes and I don't know what im playing all the time by chord name. Fuck the haters
So chuffed that you got Eyedress on, his playing has such a special mood and it was ace to get an insight into it. A great reminder that simple is good - get a chord shape and shift it up and down.
I'm still listening Eyedress and I want it to be even more popular 😊😅❤
This may sound cringe to some but this is almost the exact same approach to guitar that I have .
This guy is a highly relatable individual .
I love Idriss.
I'm proud to be part of top 0.5% Spotify top listener in 2022.
Love the songs keep it up
Just saw him in concert a few weeks ago
I picked up my guitar and played, thanks guys!
Best thing, so awesome it's back!
Love to see this guy back ❤
Nostalgiaaaa WERE SO BACK Guitar Moves is back🐉🤙🥋
"How do you sound different in the studio, than when you're on the fuckin' Portastudio?"
"I just get stoked if I, like, put 2 things together"
I've only heard like 2 of his songs, but this dude seems too real, and too chill. Massive Respect.
Incubus and Mike Einziger still rule, objectively, though.
My God you can hear the sorrow when he plays, really beautiful
This was pleasant conversation of 2 gems from the portal studio era, very nice, Cool supreme
Sooo good, I love eyedress and his musical style, so original and an inspiration to me💙
Thank you.
feel > technique ! awesome episode !
I have had a very very similar approach to guitar and writing music. Not half as productive though. One day, hopefully.
WE NEED KING KRULE
🎸❤ Love this show! Great job Matt!
great episode. appreciate not always having only virtuosic guitar players. love the Eyedress House ofCards remixed by Kevin Shields. need that on a 12".
I also can’t help playing a Kurt Vile riff every time I pick up a guitar. Will definitely try some half pyramid shapes out after this 🤙
I love this series
Saw you 2 weeks ago in LA with Iggy! You played awesome!
5:33 my favorite chord of all-time, although I play it with a full 6-string voicing. I learned it by trying to teach myself City Girl by Kevin Shields from the Lost in Translation soundtrack. It's the final chord of the song.
GMaj7 add9-13 to get Beato about it.
love that soundtrack
@eyedress is dope! Loved this.
Fresh guitar moves!? I’m in!
I thought we were gonna see a longer version of you guys playing Dark Prince🥲
You were right. What a treat.
Hey Matt, is it possible to do an episode with David Gilmore? Much love and more power to you sir. ❤️
This is a great video
Matt you seem a little speedy this ep! Conspicuous sunglasses. Love the show please make more, please do a Billy Strings episode
nailing the perfect solo / performance anxiety is so real eyedress . I relate heavily . thanks for being honest and real .
love you both~~~
Please get john dwyer on here. He's definitely got some moves
Songwriting is always more important than virtuosity!
Song they play in the beginning?
Whats the tune they’re jamming too at 13:21 ?
From a comment by @genesis2187:
it’s called “stars in your eyes” apparently it’s unreleased right now.
Love you Matt and Love Eyedress
Please do one with Mamady Kouyate one of the most underrated guitarists of all time
Saw him live a few weeks ago, 🔥
Best episode so far this series ❤
Last saw your Josh Homme vid after seeing him in concert, now EYEDRESS is on? 🤯🤘
What song are they playing in the intro? Sorry, just finding Eyedress for the first time
I think Greg Sage is still kicking around Phoenix. He has a website. It'd be fuckin' legendary
Best show ever!!! Check out ian dsa from billy talent bro
For those who search for the Bee Eyes song that starts at 7:13, it's DASMA GIRL th-cam.com/video/RTJmzrCZ0BE/w-d-xo.html
❤🎉 makes my day🎉
Yo Matt I need that Robert pollard guitar moves. Ariel pink or Diiv would be sweet 🤙
really enjoyed this
Didn't know that much about his guitar playing before this video, really. Which is weird because the way I play guitar is very very similar (but probably a little worse)
Does anyone know the song they play at 12:52?
Idk but it rips
Sounds so much like loomer by mbv
Yes please tell me too.
it’s called “stars in your eyes” apparently it’s unreleased right now.
Just shows you don’t need to have a bunch of technique or be a virtuoso to make cool
music. Just pick up the damn guitar and play it. If it sounds cool then it probably sounds cool to other people too! Good vibes on this one.
Omg I had that Alien 3 hat when I was in grade school
Anyone know the song in the beginning?
What band does he say and 6:47??
"Thurston Moore" of sonic youth
Cheers
Nice riffs my boy
what is the finger picking riff it's killing me
🔥
What Kurt Vile song are they playing at 17:00?
shit man idk, it sounds like a mixture of Continental Breakfast and Blackberry song from KV
i don't recognize one, might just be something in that vein or a dylan pattern
Makes me wanna pick up my guitar… Facts
Good episode
🤘⚡️🤘
Invite sean pablo to your show, Matt
How about some cw stoneking for an episode
Matt Sweeney is so fucking high all the fucking time
Jd Simo next Matt :)
Can anyone actually stop for a second and help Matt actually finish a riff!
❤
I think Kurt Cobain would fuck with Eyedress so hard 🔥 all I listen to is Nirvana & Eyedress lately 💚
❤🤙❤️🤙❤️
is this episode an april fools or something?
Men without hats next.
Mark Speer please!!!
"hand play" sounds way more sexual than "finger picking" haha
What an odd kid. This proves anybody can play guitar. Just play whatever feels good. It’s not that inventive. Play the half pyramid 🤘🏻 Everything by ear…. For sure. Good show
John Frusciante next?
you dont have to laugh at everything he says. we get it you are a fanboy
I didn't click because of guitars, I clicked because of that Alien 3 hat, restecp to Eyedress if he likes Alien 3, I do too.
I have always thought fingerpicking sounds gross too.
Translate Japanese🙏🙏🙏
I’m sorry but this is ridiculous. No disrespect to Eyedress, he seems like a chill dude, but this approach to the guitar is what a 15 year old has when they’re starting out. You’re seriously doing yourself a disservice by not practicing, transcribing and learning theory. Since when did it become cool to not understand something or be technically proficient?
Hipster old tired music. Nothing inspiring here.
