It was only later that they began to add silly laughter like the sound of dying hens to every program to tell the audience this is funny. Better laugh. Funny thing is that 70 years down the lane you are still being told when to laugh by an ill greased engine going khakhakhakha in every program. But then producers still think of their audience as idiots. Now you tell me some fool sitting for 8 hours in front of the idiot box hahahahaha.
It was a gag in front of a live audience and sometimes the producers wouldn't know what the stars would do just for fun. But Pat Paulsen and Campbell must have rehearsed their act beforehand. Professionals always do. The jump was unrehearsed you can see that.
A man singing 'Let It Please Be Him'? I get a little uncomfortable with that, just as I did in the 1940's with the great Lena Horne singing 'Paper Dolly'. I HOPE this was a spoof or something.
I got my answer at about the 2:40 mark. It was a spoof, all right, but in poor taste with Pat Paulsen prancing on stage. 💣 I turned it off at that point. Fraalf.
