    Braxton,
I’m genuinely so excited to see you making movies that aren’t about the complications and dread of college. While I think those videos have their place in your catalog it’s nice to see an exciting summer travel story instead.
Your connection with your mom is immensely genuine and it’s obvious how much you care about her. I love the way in which you were able to take a trip that seemed to be filled with storytelling potential galore and instead boil it down to a core story about your mom.
I enjoyed the sort of build up leading to that portion of the video. Where in, you explained all the things you could’ve told us (the audience) about. I thought the end was interesting. It seemed as if you crawled back inside your retrospective shell and sort of just pondered for a bit. What I’m trying to say is that I loved it. I could feel the fun of running around Europe. It was genuinely a blast. Kind of reminded me of a one of Casey Neistat’s OG Europe vlogs. But with more structure.
This concludes the general review of this particular movie. However switching gears now I’d love to talk about the specific moments, shots and techniques that stood out to me.
0:06 I think your actual titling process is getting a lot more interesting. The cut from the title on screen to just the title on black to Braxton Haugen on black (paired with music rise) and then Braxton Haugen on screen is super smooth. It was just visually satisfying. It’s more evolved than previous title iterations. So well done.
0:25 is a great example of something seen throughout this video and all of your videos. The shot of you walking towards the camera to turn it off helps to sell the authenticity of the movie. It’s something that is not uncommon in the vlogasphere but is expertly done by you.
0:29 I’ve been wondering what it is that makes your overhead sequences so powerful. I think part of it is the way in which you frame objects around your subject on the mat. It allows the space to feel lived in, breathed in. The tools you use are a personal reflection of who you are. I think that’s what makes your overhead sequences so powerful.
0:37 I love that you put so much creativity in to so many aspects of your life. Sure your insanely creative in your videos. But the amount of work you put into just your notebook alone is remarkable. I feel like it’s a work of art in and of itself.
0:45 The honesty is appreciated. Is this what your learned in the college of Journalism before switching?
0:55 So ever since the introduction of the go-pro I’ve been a little confused by it. But I think in this video it clicked for me. Besides it’s obvious convenience, it provides something else. A unique perspective with a vintage feel. Like a Polaroid, disposable camera, super 8 camera, shooting on film, the go-pro provides a vintage feel. In a world where high quality DSLR and iPhone videos are abundant this go pro provides a sense of change. I think however it’s the intercutting of go-pro footage that elevates it from being amateur and obnoxious, to bring eye catching and charming. Also the 4 by 3 helps sell the vintage vibes.
1:22 The cut to black here is just quick enough that it helps change scenes without feeling like a mistake.
1:30 Your music taste is impeccable as always.
1:33 You must be happy with this shot! Like c’mon this is near perfect. A beautifully framed wide shot with a woman riding past on a bike perfectly framed. I’ve seen far worse shots out of Hollywood.
1:36 And then followed by this fantastic wide shot. With the brick lanes perfectly centered on screen. Also contrasting the bikers direction (screen left) and your direction the second shot (screen right) works well.
1:48 again your notebook detailing is great.
1:56 I like the phrase “in the most idealic sense” I’ve noticed that your movies are essentially great essays. That are personal and visually complex. Is this in part due to your experience making video essays? Either way your turn of phrase and vernacular are great.
2:21 The Nerdwriter video about this Rembrandt the only thing that makes me care about it. If you haven’t watched it do yourself a favor and do.
2:25 I know this video is about your mom but man I’d love to see more of Dunkirk.
2:45 I like how you get the framing of this shot. Punch in. And the on-camera zoom out.
2:52 Great stop motion work and typography design.
3:03 A braxton Haugen classic. 3 by 4 home video.
3:13 “A road map to create yourself” Your such a good writer it’s not fair.
3:21 I love how you punch in and out. From wide to close up to wide in your overhead sequences. But are these mainly in camera close ups or 4K post production punch ins? And if they are in-camera then how do you figure out when to punch in and when to not?
    3:36 Noice
3:42 Honestly a perfect shot. The way in which the light dances on your moms glasses is so perfect.
    3:59 Genuinely genuine.
4:03-4:10 This sequence is great. But you already knew that.
4:13 Your notebooks are like best coffee table books in the world. Despite being far to small to be a coffee table book.
4:26 I had a similar situation. Though she was from UAE and I got her Instagram.
4:38 Photography for me is so crucial. Do I love making videos. Of course but just walking around taking photos sometimes is far more therapeutic and relaxing.
4:42 iPhone photos will be the death of us.
4:54 Your a good photographer too! Duh.
5:02 I’ve noticed that both you and Casey wear those paper wristbands.
    5:07 again, great writing.
5:17 I’m pretty sure your mom is cooler than you. Sorry.
5:37 I’ve never ever been in an Air BnB in general. That’d be so cool.
    5:52 Superb wide shot.
6:00 Nice object falling from focus while your taking about the wonder being long faded visual symbolism.
6:10 Trains seem dope. Sad to say I’ve yet been on one.
    6:32. More excellent writing.
6:50 I love that this summer so far has been able to you get back up on your creative feet.
6:53 The vlogger shutter/aperture crank that I’ve come to love.
7:03 Literally me all the time.
7:08 Is a really cool angle.
7:14 and the a nice corresponding angle that flows naturally.
7:44 And lady’s and gentlemen here it is. My favorite shot in this whole movie. The framing is great. The architecture is stunning. The lighting is breathtaking. And the mood is calming.
    7:47 Another great shot.
8:07 Never seen this before. The editing here is cool. I’d love to see more of this.
8:11 You deserve a Pulitzer Prize for your writing.
8:18 Man that lighting is cool.
8:26 and the gorgeous source of said lighting.
8:31. Your inner monologuing narration reminds me of Charlie Brown, in a good way, as he stands alone in the pumpkin patch as her cries out to the universe. Wanting to know an be known.
8:33 Only your well crafted notebooks allow for this usage of unspoken word to complete this thought.
8:40. Is another great shot. Your wide shots deserve and Oscar at least. Maybe a streamy at worst.
    8:47 more good music.
9:05 the wide shot reveal. Perfect as always.
9:11 I know something good is gonna happens when you break out the power tools.
9:19. I won’t lie I’m confused. What does the final episode mean? The final of what?
9:24 Have we entered the matrix.
    9:32 A beautiful ending shot.
Sorry I know that was loooooooong.
Hope you found my notes helpful. I’d love to hear back from you.
Take care, keep creating, never stop being yourself.
Your videos are my main inspiration in my creative endeavors and you play a good role in my life in general.
    Sincerely,
    Your enthusiastic analyzer, Luke Humphlett.

Luke, your feedback makes me a more vigilant filmmaker. Thank you. I see all your questions. Some I have answers for in my next video. As far as the lens changes in the overhead scenes are concerned; I physically change the lens every time I want to zoom in. I go back-and-forth between a 16 - 35 and a 24 - 105. There's not a ton of rhyme or reason to it. I just do what feels right for the scene in the moment. Take care.

I think this is one of your best films by far. The connection you have with your mom is so genuine and contagious, and it comes across so strongly. You’re an amazing artist dude.

I’ve enjoyed learning more about your early life. Nothing as sweet as the love between mother and son. You’re a great filmmaker. But your prose is a national treasure. I believe people will read your writings long after you’re gone. Bravo.
