Dr Mendenhall, outstanding presentation. I have lived with knee pain for 30 years. Arthroscopy 25 years ago solved nothing. Now I have hope ! Do you need a 61 year old former athlete in any upcoming trials ? :)

Very good talk. Now, where can you have this done? The only disagreement I have is that cartilage can have "scar tissue," which is 70--80% as strong.

It will be mind blowing good and important if you were to make this technology globally available. Also make it available for elbow and shoulder cartilage damage. I have beyond extreme pain.!!! In my elbows, shoulders and upper and lower back. Your kind of work is much more important than exploring space! I'm not in the USA and we have very few options in my country!! 😢😢

“Patients older than 60 years with knee osteoarthritis and with significant symptoms corresponding to an index of severity of knee disease of 10 or more, comprise the group most likely to benefit from treatment with intra-articular hyaluronan injections.”
younger groups or less severe had no difference to placebo. The data does support this conclusion. It’s very strange. Only thing I can think of is the younger patients knees turned over/removed the hy acid. Otoh even the placebo filler had a pretty lasting impact on some pain reduction, replacing lost synovial fluid I guess.
Intra-articular hyaluronan injections in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee: a randomised, double blind, placebo controlled multicentre trial. Hyaluronan Multicentre Trial Group. 1997

I have OA stage 1and suffered from pain an stiffness in d knees. I had stem cell transplant and my right shoulder healed d same day. my lt knee took 8 months n my rt knee improved but it still hurt in d daytime n thankfully not at night so i could sleep. Then 2+ yrs later d pain in my rt knee started at night. i didnt want to take pain killers n anti inflammatories because they give me gastritis. I prayed n asked God for healing. i also prayed for my fatty liver n to lose weight. Within days the Lord said CUT OUT SUGAR. I thought

#1- I thought I was going to hear about this "injection" but sadly...no, so NO WHITE SUGAR, NO WHITE BREAD, NO WHITE WHEAT folk...our American diet is destructive one. The FDA has not upgraded it's health charts...but if you stop eating junk foods, sodas, that's a step 1. #2, we ALL need bone broth collagen protein daily for maintenance and 3x for us with bone issues... because by age 40+, we will all end up like the Dr. spoke of above. We need to take Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM, in "triple stength", calcium in form of either coral calcium, or calcium MCHA, look it up, all triple strengths, we must do our homework. Omega 3 triple strength, D3/K2, to strengthen all our bones...I would have loved to know what's the name of the injection...I see some comments below. I did prp injection for my neck...It did not work for me...again I'm 73 and don't know if age is a factor???

I have been holding off of surgery for various reasons, had stem cell injections, prolotherapy, "chicken shots," now cortisone. You name it--this looks like the right answer for me, hopefully.

I have just heard your Ted Talk on TH-cam and felt that I must write to you about my immediate need to see what can be done about my knee problem. Well, I am 79 but in good health; I have been trying to avoid knee-replacement; of course, my efforts are those of a layman following a diet and exercise regimen (suggested by chiropractors, orthopedics and homegrown therapies). I am not sure you will have enough time to respond to my appeal for advice. But if you can spare a little time, please suggest me how to go about this problem from assessment of possibilities to actual therapeutic measures.

I think this is good but knee problems happen most of the times because of not having strong leg muscles, where the whole stress moves to the knees. If people understood that not doing physical exercises destroys the body, bones and muscles they could be preventing this type of damages. This damages are just different manifestations of the same problem. Bad living habits, Standard American Dient for example...

Manuel Acosta This is true. But take into account reasons why exercise may be limited to begin with. I was in a rigid back brace as a child. It shortened my quadriceps which I am only now in PT to repair. In the mean time, my knees had been griding for years.
