Gohan needs 17 to teach him how to better manage his stamina and defensive capabilities. A fusion with Goku to learn instant transmition won't hurt either. With a ki pool that size and efficiently flashing 17 shields while evading everything bigger with instant transmission would turn him into a serious threat.

Goku can copy skills just by watching people use it, so can Gohan. That being said, sharing Goku's thoughts and feelings while channeling IT would be more than enough for a smart guy like Gohan to skip years of practice.

To be fair, ultimate Gohan was stronger than ssj3 according to cannon.
The crazy thing that Goku went to ssj3 to stop Gohan's blast
He easily did it tho so in ssj2 full power he would be able to stop the sleeping ultimate Gohan ki wave
Gohan is always on ultimate form
Ssj3 is required to stop that blast
