Fagen sang the original studio version but Fagen had stage fright so the hired David Palmer to sing live at first. Palmer also sang a couple songs on the first album, including one of my favorites Dirty Work......
Denny Dias really jazzed it up with his chord voicings on this live version. Great, underappreciated guitarist. He’s actually the founder of Steely Dan, having placed an ad that Becker and Fagen responded to.
Is that Skunk Baxter playing bongos? An iconic 70's guitarist, for Dan, Doobies, playing bongos on 70's tv? Crazy. I know he's like an aerospace engineer, legendary guitarist, etc but tv bongo player too?
Love that you guys are still dipping into Steely Dan. Appreciate you guys and thank you for all the great tunes. Hopefully, you'll be able to hit some of Fagen's solo stuff. Early on Fagen suffered from severe stage fright, which prompted Steely Dan producer Gary Katz to hire David Palmer to sing two songs for Steely Dan.
Fagen sang lead on the studio album, and there is another Midnight Special live video up done a year later with Fagen singing lead vocals, Palmer gone by then. Wish they would have reacted to both videos to compare them.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is on the bongos. Skunk and Danny Diaz shared lead guitar roles in Steely Dan for the first three albums. Danny takes the lead here on 'Do It Again'. As many people know, Skunk left SD when Becker and Fagen decided to stop touring and went to the Doobie Brothers (brining sometimes SD backup singer Michael McDonald with him). Skunk plays many great leads with SD, his most recognizable possibly the solo on 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number'. ***Elliott Randall is another great guitarist who came in and played as a session musician for SD. His solo on 'Reelin' in the Years' (from this album) is crazy good.
This is the music of my childhood. This was on the radio all the time and it was just part of the cultural landscape. But as a musician of many years nowadays, I really like it a lot.
Nice video. This appears to be Steely Dan's "original" line up of players. That was David Palmer on lead vocals. Eventually Donald Fagan took over lead vocals of course. I really enjoyed seeing this live version. Thanks for reacting to it. Take care.
Great start to the week, gentlemen! Have seen the Dan 4x, more if I could have, I thought them as good or better live…the good ones have that quality…no autotune or pitch correction here! You guys are building quite a catalog, my compliments! ….another fine, insightful reaction…love your channel for that reason! Louie
Am seeing Steely Dan (RIP Walter Becker) next month in Newark, NJ. Thank God we still have Donald Fagen. Steely is opening for the Eagles, but my main draw is the Dan 😍. Had the honor of seeing Steely Dan live about 10 years ago and it was priceless. The song that they do with a different lead singer that I absolutely love is “Dirty Work”. Love that you are still reacting to their catalog; I cannot WAIT for you to hear “JACK OF SPEED” and “NIGHT BY NIGHT” 🔥
Gosh guys... Midnight special was amazing hour and half Friday Night. Recently looked up the trailor for the show 1976, you would be shocked of topic stars discuss between songs. It was a mssg from the past so relevant today. Cheers....
That's Jeff ( Skunk ) Baxter on the bongo's. He is a phenomenal guitarist & plays lead guitar on several of their songs. He also did a stint with the Doobie Brothers when Tom Johnson was out due to health reasons. He played on the Living on the Fault Line & Minute by Minute albums. Evidently he is multi talented.
Long time Steely Dan fan... 45 years now.. ol Glen Hedrick of tree planting fame in 80s in SW WA had greatest hits tape he would play in one of those hour and a half crummy rides. So grateful for that.. cuz the more i listened, was blown away by every one of their songs.. Show Biz Kids, Haitian Divorce, My Old School, Reelin The Years, Do it Again, Josie, Dirty Work, Royal Scam, Crimson Blues really really sold me. At the time not much Steely Dan played on rock stations like KISW.. it was Aerosmith, Led Zep, The Beatles, Who, ACDC, Pink Floyd, Stones, Kinks, David Bowie in those days.. Steely Dan is as good of a rock band as any of those groups... Which is saying a lot.
I just want to thank you guys for making my daily “Happy Hour” that much better…I’m 61 and love seeing ppl like you keeping this awesome awesome music alive…Respect…
Back in the days… We had Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert on Friday nights. And on Saturday’s we had American Bandstand Soul Train Saturday Night Live (when it was funny) and closed out with The Midnight Special. All bands, regardless of genre were live and in person…
Always great to see them live. I finally did in the 90s when they decided to tour after decades of not. There's very good live versions of Babylon Sisters on TH-cam to ck out. This was great, I remember the Midnight Special shows.
I saw that show night it aired! That's the day SD hooked me! I was 12 and now 64 and still wearing out vinyl, CD, etc.. Steely Dan, your favorite bands favorite band 🔥🤘✌
So glad you guys are still enjoying Steely Dan. I saw them in 2019 and they started with Bodhisattva from Countdown to Ecstasy. It was amazing as was the whole night. Two of the best hours I have ever spent. Take a listen to that tune.
Hey, it's me from the Tool Army post. Now you're diving into my all time favorite band. I didn't mention that I'm 61. I just love great musicianship with a little drive and beat. I've seen SD 5 times and I cannot recommend their live show more. My 30 year old son took me for my birthday 3 years ago and he had a really great time. These albums were our family road trip CDs. My favorite album is Royal Scam and anything from it is amazing. I was 14 when I first heard Ricki Don't Loose That Number sitting in my dad's cadillac in front of a Thrifty store in Southern California. Fan for life.
Another great performance that you've reacted to. I basically heard their songs on the radio and their music and sounds better on youtube. Thanks for the reactions.
Fagen did the vocals in the studio, At the time he didn't like singing lead, live. The guy playing congas is the other great guitar player in group at the time, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter.
I think there is another Do it Again Midnight Special live video a year later with Fagen only singing vocals that is better imo. David Palmer is singing lead on this, he was only in the band for the first album. Fagen did sing lead on the studio album but he was a reluctant lead singer live at first . Jeff Skunk Baxter, usually one of the lead guitarists, is on bongos here, and Denny Dias is on lead guitar. Becker is back there somewhere but as usual doesn't get the air time. It would have been cool if you had reacted to the MS version done a year later with Fagen singing lead in the same reaction video so you could directly compare.
I agree Barry! The studio version is far superior. A live version I particularly liked was Reelin' In The Years from Alive In America. I love it when talented musicians rearrange their music and it still sounds absolutely amazing!
"Now you swear and kick and beg us that you're not a gamblin' man Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand Your black cards can make you money so you hide them when you're able In the land of milk and honey, you must put them on the table"
The groove on this song! Sadly when I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl in the last couple years they did not play this (my favorite). Otherwise fantastic show.
They really don't play it live all that often. It was their very first song on the very first album, their first huge hit (with Reelin), and I think Fagen got burned out on singing it all the time.
The Bongo dude is Jeff Baxter. He played guitar for Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. Unusually enough More recently, he has worked as a defense consultant and advised U.S. members of Congress on missile defense. Pretty amazing dude. Much love to you guys.
Rare outing for David Palmer on lead vocals for this. Don's better of course, but stage fright...The chorus (THE CHORUS!!) is a a triumph of minimalism. You Go Back Jack Do It Again.

I agree, especially with SD. That said, there are a handful of bands I like better live -- even on the first listen -- than in the studio. Thin Lizzy's "Live and Dangerous," Blue Oyster Cult's "On Your Feet or On Your Knees," Judas Priest "Unleashed in the East," and Scorpions "Tokyo Tapes" to name a few.
This is why Fagen and Becker didn't think "touring" worked for Steely Dan, later on. The kind of music they wanted to produce/record was so intricate that it took dozens if not hundreds of attempts to get it right once in a studio. Trying to get it right repeatedly in different environments wasn't really a possibility so for a while, while album sales drove music industry profits and tours were a marketing expense, SD chose to spend that money on perfecting albums...
@@kbrewski1 i figured as much. Midnight Special was notorious for short time slots--- case in point--- The crazy almost double-speed version of Hocus Pocus that the band Focus performed on MS...
Donald Fagen sang the vocal on the album version. The vocalist on this video is David Palmer and doesn't have the signature vocal sound of Fagen. Not sure why Fagen didn't sing this in the vid. Not as good.
Its because at the beginning of Steely Dan, Fagen was reluctant to sing lead vocals, which is why they added Palmer. After the first tour, Fagen became more comfortable.

Yes, Fagen sang on the studio version. But I do enjoy the few songs Palmer sings on including Midnite Cruiser w/ a fantastic solo from Skunk.
