Thank you. About creating when you're tired: because I want to get on with a project, if I'm tired I will work on preparation and planning - gathering the materials and equipment, and also writing out the details of my plan. It genuinely moves the work forward without wrecking anything.

Great tips. My biggest mistake is always sewing when tired. You have stopped me sewing tonight. I know that I'm too tired, and I will make a mistake. So I have threaded my machine and over locker instead. So when I sew next I'm ready to go. X

I just threaded last night. I wanted to finish the shirt but I just knew I’d mess it up!!

Choosing the right fabric was a big learning curve for me! In the beginning I bought quite a few fabrics where I simply loved the colour or the print, but I tended to ignore the materials as long as it didn't look too plastic. I ended up hardly ever wearing them because cheap fabric is uncomfortable to wear.
I also learned that not all fabrics are created equal, even if the fibers are.
Last year I sewed a beautiful sheath dress in pink and orange linen, but I bought the cheapest linen I could find. It already shed so much during prewash, my entire work area was covered in pink fuzz and my sewing machine looked like a pink plushy had exploded in there. I finished the dress and ever since then I'm mending it after every wear or wash because the fabric is so thin in places it tears if you look at it too harshly. Such a waste of time honestly!

This is a good video to understand why we should not skip any handmade garments. Thank you for sharing Juliet I totally agree with you lovely ❤️❤️👍🏽👍🏽

For me ironing at every step makes the process easier. Also making a practice garment first to work out fit and technique issues beforehand. If I run into a technique that isn’t working I set aside time to practice on scraps before going any further. Before using a technique on my good fabric I might do a couple more run through with scraps. Using the right fabric is also crucial. Sometimes I’ll baste, then iron so that the shape of the garment is set before topstitching so it’s a bit easier. Then I’m not fighting the fabric grain or lumpy seams. It’s not fast sewing. If I were sewing at a factory I’d be using specialty machines, attachments while working on the same garment or step time and again. At home we sew many different patterns with different fabrics and don’t have specialty machines.

This is a phenomenally important tip!! I look back now and ALL the errors, frustrations etc are somehow related to not having enough brain power to do it right. Made me stop enjoying sewing until I realised that was the problem xxx

Hello B!!! Your message really warmed my heart. I currently don’t have commercial sewing patterns but I have base patterns that are supposed to be used to create garment designs. I hope to have some very soon. all the best to you and your family. Juliet. 🙏🏽

Early on you mentioned the right fabric. My daughter wanted me to make her formal dress for a school event (I'm not the best at sewing) and she had already selected the pattern (a bit too revealing for me but within the school rules). We goto the fabric store and she insisted on a light weight fabric more suitable for lining when to drape properly it needed a much heavier fabric. She went with my suggestion for the next event 😃

My biggest mistakes are wrong Fabric or skipping interfacing. I know better, I learned to sew garments in 1965.
I do always pre-wash all my fabrics, and I always press my seams.
That snipped dress was really repaired beautifully with the bow. Lovely.

As well as ironing fabric you should press pattern pieces too. Otherwise the shape will be distorted. So many sewists don’t bother!
Ooh I have made a few mistakes with my overlocker, chopping into the fabric. It lead once to a neckline on a cami of gorgeous daisy buttons covering up my repair. Design feature!

That’s right, the mistakes turn into design features 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
