Wow, the dresses you made for your brother's wedding are BEAUTIFUL! I hope I get that good at sewing eventually so that I can make something like those :)
The missing knowledge I have is this: if I want to add a zip or other change, how to draft for the facing or extra fabric that you will need. I love your teaching style, so encouraging and upbeat.
I iron my patterns and then rein on them with some lightweight interfacing on them. It helps the pattern last and also helps to stop it sliding around.
I usually start with the fabric. I see what fabrics are available that are appealing to me (what jumps out at me and screams "buy me") and then the weight and drape of the fabric usually inspires the cut and style. The fabric kind of tells me what it wants to be. I rarely start with the garment idea and then go find the fabric.
That's me! Although now I've started to be more mindful with what I have, I'm trying to determine "holes" in my wardrobe and then find fabric that would suit my ideas. Haven't gone to the fabric store because of corona, let's see how that goes lol.
@@JulietUzor_ I need to touch it! Unless it's a cotton calico or something where I know what that feels like, but for fashion fabrics I need to touch it. I'm a tactile person.
Love hacking patterns now, but usually trace it out first as I usually have basic adjust events to do before I even start a style change. I hate that it takes so long before I can even start sewing but then I love that it fits. And for me, it’s usually style before fabric. Which is strange because with my knitting the fibre leads me to the style. The dress I am working on just now is a mix of three patterns by the same designer which meant I knew the parts would fit well together (sleeve, bodice and skirt).
Those are great ideas on how to use the existing patterns to modify the items you want to make from a certain pattern without buying a new pattern. I have to remember that when I start sewing pants and shirts.
I cut the patterns. I trace occasionally, if I think I may need to make a few adjustments. I would love to see more pattern hack videos. You made a very nice dress - love the back detail.
Lots of fun ideas to play with! It would be great to see more about how to modify patterns. On the paper you traced out, it'd be helpful to see the lines of the original pattern and the lines of the adjustments you made. Showing how to correct the pattern at the bust and waistline would also be super helpful.
This is so incredibly helpful, Juliet! I feel like I learn most when I hack patterns, or even make slight adjustments to the fit of a pattern. So hearing your ideas on how to approach it, is really great. I'm looking forward to trying a hack soon.
Excellent video Juliet! Please continue showing ideas for changing up patterns! This is so exciting to view how you modify and update patterns...your ideas are wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing!
Yes I would love to see more. I have some beautifull sleeve ideas, and simple ones, but I'm a little bit scared. Thankyou so much for sharing your knowledge☺
Thank you for your Great info. Also on the back of some guide sheets there is a completely blank page. Record your changes there and everything can go back into the pattern envelope.
Yess, please share all your secretes, thank you. I have so many unfinished/jacked up projects and I don’t know what to do with them or how to fix them... send help! 😍🤗
I'm very interested in pattern hacking. Especially as the price of patterns continues to rise, it seems more important than ever to get the most out of every pattern.
Sometimes the fabric leads me to a pattern. Sometimes the fabric waits for a long time before a pattern is found. I am team trace because I can't bare to cut a pattern.
I'm team trace. I need to merge multiple sizes so I like keeping my original. Really want to learn to do slopers for bodice, skirt, sleeves thatv truly fit me. Wish I had started sewing younger instead of 71 but I'm going to make it happen.
That’s the spirit! There are sooo many garments you can make using slopers fitted to your true body size. I hope you indeed enjoy creating all of the clothes. ☺️🧡🤎
this was so helpful, thank you! i was wondering, if you’re doing a pattern with a stretch fabric, how do you do a toile? it seems like doing it with a calico wouldn’t really work as the fabric you use will be so different. what’s your suggestion in this scenario?
I’m a cut out pattern. But as to which one I do... I do both. Sometimes I’m walking around and see pattern and love it and sometimes I see a fabric and just know what I have to make with it.
Hi, Juliet, I would like to see more sewing pattern hacks from you. Far too advanced for me, I'm just at the pyjamas clothes making stage from Tilly. But I'll get there soon enough!😁
JULIET UZOR they were all made from cotton jersey, but I live in Ireland and they live in the US, so I FaceTimed them and let them choose the fabric. Many different choices...
You can draft patterns yourself or buy downloadable patterns. You'll need to buy ink, paper and a printer or find a printer to print out however. The download speed should be high enough with cyberspace, netcom or whatever internet service provider you have.
pls help me with a video !!! I like patterns that i like but most of them , they dont have sleeves...... how can i add sleeves to patterns that they dont have any ?? thnkx alot
I am team trace over and my fave pattern to use is newlook 6261 it literally works for everybody with minimal adjustment ,good for both knit and woven 😃.And thank you for all the kind advice via calls and messaging .you are amazing.this is @omonibody ❤️

I love your way of teaching or explanations of changing garments. You have a delightful manner. All the best to you and thanks!
Thank you! You too! 😀

I love this!!! Sounds exactly like me. That’s why I rarely buy fabric online. Unless the vendor shows the fabric in videos 😁😁😁
Exactly. I’ve spoken to lots of creatives and they share the same sentiments 💙💙

You are so so kind. Thanks a lot!
I start with the fabric as inspiration.
😊😊
Loved this, please make more. It was so informative. I’m a tracer and tend to make wearable toiles.
Really? Ahh thanks. I’ll make more in the future 😍

That peach colored hat is "fierce" Sis!
😀😀😀😀 thank you
Great vlog! Love to see more sewing hack vlogs. I’m really trying to get more value out of the patterns I already have,.Your final dress looks 👌!
See! That’s exactly why I saved this video: so that people would use what they already have to get what they want. 😁😁😁💜

ABSOLUTELY!!! 😀
Team trace. I admire you so much! Thanks for your videos.
Oh Lula, you’re gonna make me cry.
I'm getting up the courage to hack a pattern. The toile makes me feel brave. Old sheets will do it. Thanks!
May! You’ve got this!!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I start with a design in mind and search for fabric.
Hi Juliet! It's been a few weeks.. am excited to be back to watch you live.
awwwww.....Welcome back! I hope you've been well?
Sometimes the fabric leads me to a pattern. Sometimes the fabric waits for a long time before a pattern is found. I am team trace because I can't bare to cut a pattern.
I can totally relate, Clare 🥰🥰
I do both but prefer to start with fabric and match the style
ohhhh I like that 😀😀😀
Thank you for the info and your glowing darling 😘
I am? 😁😁😁thanks so so much. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

Thanks for sharing !! 😀😀😀
I loooove that dress. Thanks for the tips! 😊
You are so welcome! 😀😀
Those wedding outfits you made are unbelievable...also where did you get that green fabric? I need it in my life :D
Really? Thanks. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
The green fabric was purchased by my sister. If she does let me know, I’ll share
I prefer to cut the pattern, it is a great idea to cut an extra size just in case 😉
Absolutely! I agree 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I sometimes design and then go fabric hunting but if i see a fabric sale I'll visualize a style or just buy fabric
love this!
Hi, Juliet, I would like to see more sewing pattern hacks from you. Far too advanced for me, I'm just at the pyjamas clothes making stage from Tilly. But I'll get there soon enough!😁
Will do! you will get there sooner than you think. That's how I started- easy simple tasks and learning along the way 😀😀😀
Yes please more pattern hacks🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰thank you soooo much, very informative 🤗🤗
Will do!! also thank you very much 😀😀
I defo trace! Using the TATB Frankie Tee, I made size 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 1. I made one for me and one for each of my 5 grandgirls...
Really?? Ohhh that’s so cool! Did you make them in different fabrics for them or a uniform one?
JULIET UZOR they were all made from cotton jersey, but I live in Ireland and they live in the US, so I FaceTimed them and let them choose the fabric. Many different choices...
Sure! Thank you!
No problem! 😀😀
Its really difficult to get patterns here in Nigeria
Really? That’s super frustrating. But can you draft patterns by yourself? I bet you already can 😁😁😁🙌🏽

@@JulietUzor_ lol I try but I do mostly free hand. There are some clothes that really needs pattern. Plus I'm a size zero( lol extra wahala)
@@cap4life1 I'll try that
I hate tracing but I always do it because patterns are so expensive.
💛💛
I rarely use patterns. I cut freehand
its sooo cool isn't it? as in free hand? I do free hand as well
I shop for fabrics in both ways. I am way to guilty of buying fabric with no idea at all, though. I must stop that.
🥰
Good question! I'm pretty much split down the middle when designing garments. Sometimes it's the pattern and sometimes it's the fabric.
Exactly me too! 😀😀😀
I also have lots of beautifull vintage patterns that I buy at charity shops, but they are usually to big.
Could you possibly try downsizing them ?
I start with fabric and decide which of my patterns will look great in that fabric
same here 😀😀😀😀 well, most times.
1:53 "I'm kind of Lacking Maxi Dress In My Wardrobe" is this your own way of telling us that another baby is on the way🕺🕺🕺🕺 Congrats hehehebebebe
huh? 😂😀😂
I'm interested in hacking, especially as a more beginner sewist.
That’s amazing. I was like that as well. As a beginner sewist, I was soooo into hacking 🤣🤣🤣
I usually buy fabric with no idea what I'm making. Wait to find the right style.
we're the same 😀😀😀
