About this visit:
Originally scheduled to load Iron Ore at the CN dock in Two Harbors, what a surprise to see the a few miles off the Duluth Entry this morning. For me it was a good thing they were only spinning one screw, they came in at about 8.3 Kts, giving me plenty of time to make the 5 mile journey to Canal Park and catch them!
The James R Barker arrived at the Duluth Entry November 24, 2023 bright and early at 07:30 with the Starboard engine down. Look at the stacks on the video and you will see only 1 major stack is puffing.
They arrived at the Port Terminal dock at 08:30 with tug assist from from the G-Tug Kentucky. Good thing they called in on this one, someone was a bit confused last night taking the orders and had them assisting the Burns Harbor!

Greetings brother,
I get the feeling ' capt ' likes the sound of her horn as much as us 😂😂 💯👍🤙🖖
I sure hope so!
That horn is something to be proud of 👍
Love that horn. I can imagine dishes rattling somewhere
You and me both!
Oh yeah!!! Haha, JRB can rattle my dishes with that horn any day!!
You can't beat this horn :) I can only imagine the vibrations you get on the canal. Thanks Paul always enjoy these
Glad you enjoy it! It is really a "feeling it" experience in person.
My favorite horn
The James R Barker and the Barker Bark is special any day of the year...📣😊
Its been a bit since I captured this one! I was quite happy to see them coming in. Broken or not 😁
That horn is something else love the barker
Indeed it is!
What a salute! Wow!
Indeed!
Amazing video as usual! Thanks for including the radio chatter. I enjoy listening to that as well as the whistles. 😀
Thanks! Glad you like the chatter!
The voice of experience, lol 🤣. Great video Paul 🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
I come for that fantastic horn and it never fails to impress my ears! LOVE IT.
Bummer she has an engine down, but the best Black Friday surprise ever for Duluth (wakeup call for those shoppers who overslept!). Gorgeous morning and Captain Newland really rocks the whistle ❤. Had to laugh when he said he’d taken her to Connor’s Point and doesn’t want to do it again 😅
Thanks! It was quite the surprise for me, I though I had "the day off" 🤣
The Barker Bark!
@@toddo316and boy can she ever BARK!
Very nice captain’s salute but I wouldn’t expect any less from the Barker ❤❤❤
What a gorgeous sunrise video, thanks for getting up and making this one. Great work.
Even worth enduring that donkey horn.
Glad you enjoyed it, You do not disappoint me on your horn "reviews". Keep making me smile.
Damm missed a good one but at least you caught the Barker!!!
Thanks Christian, were you up ?
@PaulScinocca I wasn't up there unfortunately
A beautiful video in every sense 😁 Thanks Paul for making this available to someone living on the other side of the world and who'd otherwise never be able to experience it 😀
Thank you, very much appreciated 🙏
Beautiful early sunrise.
Yes it was!, a bit on the chilly side, but worth it!
A nice ship and a great salute
Indeed!
I love the horn on the JRB !!
It is a very distinct horn for sure! Very popular.
That horn is incredible , what a great sound . The guys that installed that baby were sharp . the sound is an A over a D , an interval of a Fifth , a couple of of octaves down from center C on a piano . I have been watching your videos for some time , Paul , and that is the best sounding ship's horn that I've ever heard . The ship coming in , on calm water , with the sun just up in the fall . Gorgeous . One of the many appeals of the northland . I used to live in Yellowknife on Great Slave Lake in the North West Territories , above all the prairie provinces . That lake , like Superior , was cold as hell . If you fell in , that was pretty much it , if you had no way to get out quickly , the hypothermia killed you shortly . My buddy used to say ' The life jacket just helps to find the body ' Great video .
Wakey, wakey, Duluth.
LOL 😳
I was there to watch this at the pier b hotel and the salute was fabulous
I have a video of it
Beautiful video. Thank goodness they made it safely in!
Indeed, pretty sure they were not in any danger. They definitely want it running to full ability though!
Awesome, thanks
You're welcome 😊
I’m agreeing with everyone that horn was great and along with sunrise makes a super vid. Paul your videos are really neat to watch and I’m glad I found your site!
Best horn on the lakes.❤
Prayers for the JRB, hoping the engine will be repaired soon...Miss her bark!
She's all better now, back out and about! That video will post soon.
So glad to see her back up and barking!!!!!@@PaulScinocca
I have SO Missed the Barker's Bark. She hasn't been to Duluth much this season. Going to Two Harbors most of the year. I hope they get her fixed soon.
The gap between the first and second horn, the fact that you hear the high and then the low about half a second later… Is that by design? Or simply a happy accident of the lower tone taking a second to kick in? It’s beautiful. Anyone know?
I was wondering the same thing myself. Intentional or not I love the sound.♥️
Beautiful video! Great work. Where's the Barker been?? Seems like earlier in the season she was here like every week, now I can't even remember the last time I have seen her before this.
Her Horn is back!
That means the Captain's back!
@@PaulScinocca yep! Sounds like he did some tuning too, it was getting really quiet, warbling and a lot higher pitched the last few times I saw her
Left = Port .. Right = Starboard. The port engine is down.
Good lord, that was loud.
I bet the Turkey Day Hangover crew in Canal Park didn't appreciate the Symphony in Barker Major nearly as much as we did.
Naw, its music to a hungover ear....
Note to self, try not to set up tug boat service at 3:30am or things may get messed up!
LOL! That was proof you should double check! Especially when someone "sounds out of it"
You had it backward Paul he came in on the starboard engine, the port engine was down.
Oops
What channel are you getting them on. What type radio
Marine radio, I was not looking at the channels during the video, my guess is 10 and 18
Really beautiful piece. Probably belongs on your best of album. Little bit surprised we got the Barker Bark so early in the AM. 🥱🥱🥱🥱
