- Have you ever wondered how a safe combination works? Left 4 times, right 3 times, left twice....but why? Why does that open a safe?
In this video we take apart a safe dial and show you what's inside a safe combination lock. We break down the components, the wheels, the lever, the safe relocker and more.

This demo is super clear, thank you! I may need to 3D print a (much simplified) version of this...
Wow! That was very cool! I don’t know how anyone ever invented that!
Very nice video, could you also show how the change combination key works inside to set a new combination?
Very cool information.. thank you sir!👍
Is there some way to open my vault? I forgot to put back the cover when i open it. The relocker activated. 😅
Left 4 times, right 3 times, left twice. But how do the flies not rurn the next wheel on the very first turn? How does it skip 2 turns before it turns the 2nd wheel, ditto for the 3rd wheel?
4:03 my dude. The cam spins wheel 3 which after full rotation spins 2 which in turn spins wheel 1. So basically spinning 4 times clockwise is once for the cam, then other 2 times for the wheels number 3 & 2 and the 4th time is basically turning wheel 1 into position. It's why it doesn't matter if you make more than 4 spins when inputting the first digit. Subsequent turns after the 4th will just be turning all the wheels.
spinning the dial counterclockwise after inputting first digit 3 times (one for cam, wheel 3 and eventually wheel 2) doesn't affect wheel 1.
Hope you got it
Simplified, you need minimum 4 spins to affect wheel 1, 3 spins affect wheel 2, 2 for wheel 1 and the last spin just rotates only the cam till the nose falls into place and gets pulled to retract the bolt.
Now I just would love to understand mechanism of setting the lock code
