Alesund Norway the prettiest city in all of Norway!

- Today's episode is all about the charming town of Alesund, Norway. Get ready for an adventure where we explore without spending a dime or booking any fancy excursions.
Our first mission? Climbing a mountain for some seriously epic views. We are heading to Aksla Viewpoint! Imagine standing on top and soaking in the breathtaking scenery. From the top you get to see the Art nouveau touches and the pastel palette of the downtown buildings, while the Sunnmøre Alps provide a dramatic backdrop to this city. Then, we strolled through most of the old town, discovering its nooks and crannies.
After all that exploring, our stomachs started growling, so we grabbed some lunch. But wait, the adventure doesn't stop there! We swung by a brewery because, if you have been here a while you know we love a good brewery stop!
As the day winds down, we say bye to the gorgeous town as we sail away. But, of course, the perfect end to our day is waiting for us at Luminae, the Retreat restaurant on the ship. What an epic day and a great last stop on our Norway adventure!

I live here/there.
I have lived here and there in Norway. From the Arctic, to the south and east. I will never leave Ålesund again.
I love living here.i just spent 24 hours in Oslo, and when I got home, the second my plane landed and I got off, the ocean air just made me stop and enjoy.
Every time I leave, coming back reminds me so much why I love it here. It's nice to get the reminder from time to time
It's easy to get bored, but there is nothing like coming home. Even after just one day.
Edit.
That troll in kongens gate, then kings street, that troll was there when I was a young little lad, 30 years ago. I have no idea how old it is, but it's been there for a long, long time.
It's a piece of history, and is probably way older than the two of you.
We had an amazing time and going back again this year!
Hey Emma and Jack
We watched all your vlogs on the Norwegian Fjords before we did our first Fjords cruise and got some very useful tips and information from your videos.
In particular the visit to Molo where my husband had factored into our day having a flight of beer, before reboarding our ship, just like you did and he loved it. We also had a burger here which was amazing and refuelled us after the 418 steps 🙂
So just wanted to say thank you for all your detailed information during your cruise and we can't wait to watch further videos. We will also be watching your Alaska cruise as this is also on our agenda at some point. This will be a longer journey for us being from the UK.
Thanks so much and glad our videos could help! Alaska is amazing so well worth the trip! Hope you continue to enjoy the channel.
Emma & Jack
I'm so glad you liked Ålesund! I live on one of the closest islands, and agree that it's the most beautiful city in Norway ❤
We love Alesund so much! We were actually back recently and got a chance to go to the aquarium. That episode should be actually be out next week!
Thanks for watching! Love your city!
We LOVE this city!
It is truely an amazing city!
Emma & Jack
🌞probably will be visiting this place in a while)) Bardu for now
Great video! For people that cannot do the stais, there is also a tourist train that goes to the top. We did that and it was really nice, you see a lot from the surroundings. The town itself was nice to walk around and explore the shops.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. That train is a great way to see the town. We basically followed its path around the city.
Emma & Jack
glad to see you enjoy my lovely little city.
Heading back this week!
@@lindsayslivealittle Enjoy. I just moved from Seattle a year and a half ago. I am in language school at the base of the hill up to Fjellstua and so I try and do those stairs every day during "pause". The views are breathtaking! Aalesund really is a charming city. The architecture following the 1904 fire, is absolutely stunning. Have fun.
Great video!
Norway is my dream vacation.
Thank you! It is such amazing place and definitely worth the dream vacation. The views, food, cities but most importantly the people make it so memorable.
Have a great weekend.
Emma & Jack
Great job climbing all those steps!
Thanks. The views were worth it!
Glad you enjoyed our town! After the fire in 1904 it was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style, not Art Deco. The Art Deco style started around 1920.
We love it! Will actually be back 2 times this year! Ooo you are so correct! I definitely misspoke thought I had said Art Nouveau. Thanks for catching that!
If you have any suggestions of things to do in your gorgeous town we would love suggestions! One trip we will be with our 3 year old and we were thinking of going to the aquarium.

It was a german designer. Pretty intresting huh?
@@JMarsCreed Not sure what you mean by this. There were many architects designing the new town and most were Norwegian. But some were educated in Germany.
Ålesund!
Thanks so much for sharing!
The tree is called an Monkey puzzle tree in the UK or a Chilean pine. It originates from South America and is one of the oldest extant trees in the world. Has not changed much from the time of the dinosaurs!
Weird how a tree was just so memorable! We have noticed them more often in our travels now.
I'm Norwegian but spent 30+- years living in Seattle. There were several of these trees on the drive from north Seattle to the UW where my father taught. We called them monkey puzzle trees. I believe they were imported from Asia.
Thank you so much for sharing. We really loved those.
Have a great day.
Emma & Jack
I knew the trees looked familiar. I'm from Seattle but just moved to Aalesund after meeting a Norwegian in Ballard years ago.
Thank you for a great Video!
Thank you so much for being here and watching!

Love your videos, I will be doing a first cruise to cozumel in 2025,from galveston, iam in texas, 2026 book to alaska with Norwegian 10 days sept, so my plan is 12 day norway with celebrity 2027.
Thanks so much. Have an amazing time and you booked some good ones already!
Thanks for this. We will be there at the end of September.
We hope you have an amazing time!
The tree is called Apeskrekk (Apescare) in Norwegian. I googled it and the scientific name for the family is Araucariaceae. Imported to Europe in the mid 1700s.
Thanks for sharing. We were fascinated by them!
Emma & Jack
"Monkey Tail" trees. We have a lot of them in Tacoma, Washington!
Hi Emma the tree is called auricaria that's it's botanical name
Common name monkey puzzle
I am from Scotland and I've been to Norway
Thanks so much! The trees are so unique. And I secretly love the name monkey puzzle! It make the tree even cooler!!!
Great video ! Thanks for the beer 🍺 Emma looks stunning. Which beer did you like the best? How did you do in the casino? We lived in Vegas for 25 years. Thanks for the video 🍺
I am a lucky man to be married to Emma. Honestly they were all delicious and unique.
Casino on this trip wasn’t the best return. But we enjoyed seeing the staff again.
Emma has never been to Vegas but I have been there a few times (not in several years).
Jack
You answered my question in the video about comparing it to Alaska. I see a lot of similarities but different in a lot of ways. Just going to have to see for myself some day. As long as they have the Monkey gin. Ha.
Hahahaha. Monkey gin makes everything better but not sure Norway needs the help.
You won’t regret it!
We hope you have a great week and thanks for the continued support of the channel!
Emma & Jack
Ålesund is not the third largest city in Norway. Ålesund is the ninth largest city in Norway.
Otherwise, great video from Ålesund. 😊
Thanks watching and clarifying that for us. We try our best to give the most correct info but mistakes happen.
We love Norway and are heading back for a Christmas trip on Havila in a couple weeks.
We hope you have a great weekend.
Emma & Jack
the tree at 1:53 is called "monkey terror", i dont know where it comes from or what type of tree it is but my uncle had one
I cant believe how empty the stairs were. The threat of rain maybe scared people away. LOL
It made filming pretty easy and the walk very nice.
Aw, you didn't visit 'Atlanterhavs Parken' Aquarium. Well, that would probably have taken too much of your day. Still, a reason to visit again. =)
Funny you say that! We were actually just back here 2 days ago (with our daughter) and we went to the aquarium! It was a beautiful aquarium. Thanks for watching!
I'm just curious - have you found the food quality to have stayed the same as from your last Retreat cruises? I sailed the Retreat twice this year, and found it consistently good in Lumina and the specialty restaurants, but the quality and variety in the MDR and buffet just seems to have gotten consistent worse - last Retreat cruise was May, and I have one coming up in August. I took a transatlantic crossing in Oct not in the Retreat, and have to say the food, except in specialty, was cafeteria grade. All and all, I love Celebrity, especially the staff and the Edge class ships, but I worry if you don't pay for The Retreat, it's not really a premium line. Love your videos. PS - I'm on fjord cruise on the Apex in the Retreat fall 2024 and your post as helpful.
Thanks for watching! We hope that this series is inspiring you for your trip.
We have found that sometimes it can be hit and miss in the buffet. We only have had a couple meals in the MDR and can’t really weigh in there. What is always good in the buffet though is the Indian food which is some of our favorite.
But honestly most the time we eat in Luminae because it is so good.
Emma & Jack
Great, informative video! How long did it take to do the climb to the viewpoint?
Hi! the "funny" tree is an Auracaria. It comes from Chile. :)
Thanks much for letting us know! We probably spent 15-20 min just taking pictures of the trees because how “fun” they were.
Emma & Jack
@@lindsayslivealittle in 2007 it there already ^^
Hello! I really enjoyed your day in Alesund. How long do you think it took you to walk the 418 steps? Thank you!
Thanks for watching! I can’t remember exactly but I think it took us 20-30 minutes and that’s with filming and stopping for pictures. It didn’t take too long. The steps aren’t very steep.
@@lindsayslivealittle Thank you! I have one more question. Did your itinerary include Tromso? If so, which port did the Apex go into? The one close to city center or not close at all.
We did not go to Tromso with the Apex sorry. But we did do Tromso on another trip… video just went live last night if you want to check it out! I am sure it will be brighter when you are there though since we had no sun!
im from Ålesund and its not the 3rd biggest its 9th i think trondheim is 3rd but great vid i love my city its so beautiful and its built in the Jugend style i dont know if it has another name in english
We caught that after we posted but we were just back a few weeks ago and will correct in our next video on Alesund! We just love our time in Norway.
@@lindsayslivealittle great that you are enjoying Norway 😁😁😁
We always called them monkey tail trees. I don't know the botanical name.
Have you tried to eat the "small pancake" called Svele?
Great video 🤘
Thanks so much. Not sure we have but we are heading back their in about a week and will add that to the list to find!
@@lindsayslivealittle Welcome back!
I Live there
Such an amazing city. Our video can’t do it justice but hopefully represented the city well. We are heading back again twice this year.
Well, it's also perhaps the most expensive city in all of the world.
We found costs to be fairly reasonable for what we experienced and did.
It is great, except the stupid resturant at the top which has the greatest view of all. You have to pay to get into the viewing area.
Didn't know that
th-cam.com/video/ExxFC-hBsx8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rVW3k88ill9zeMeZ first 14 mins of this shows the trip from Ålesund Airport to Ålesund. (The tunnels to the Islands)
Ålesund is nowhere near being the third largest city in Norway. IT IS TINY. There are a lot of actual large cities in Norway, nothing close to American cities. But I would barely call it a city, it's a large town.
Yes we totally made a mistake in that statement.
Ålesund is a city
Try to remember that norway is smaller then america and we are limited bc of fjords and mountains
@@JMarsCreed well, being born and raised here, I know it's a city. My point was just that it's so small, it's almost townlike, and absolutely not the third largest city in Norway.
@rytterl i live here too i dont think its small
10:30 Definantly not the third largest city in Norway. More like 7th or 8th or something like that. Third largest is Trondheim
Yes we made a mistake with that regard and just returned from a Havila cruise where will make sure that correction is presented.
