The ugliest wave in the world. I've seen a photo of the bluff where a guy was at the bottom of the wave & the water in front of him was nearly as high as he was, i.e. the water was coming off a reef in front of him. Not exactly your favourite place wipe out at. Teahupoo is likewise very scary as there is a reef that rises steeply just below the surface. That's why the wave sucks up so quickly like that.

Nazare gets bigger than any spots in the world. That's where they have legit 100 ft waves.

How anyone could willingly surf these waves is beyond my imagination... these are truly supermen. That French wave looked particularly terrifying, btw. Horrific wipeout, to be sure.
But what makes Maverick's so ugly in my mind is simply the conditions. Huge waves, giant riptides, rocky shore, AND freezing cold water requiring head to toe protection. Not what I'd call a "pleasant" experience. At least Tuahuppo has warm, tropical weather and crystal clear water.

tiffsaver Believe it or not, the wave in France is not considered by the big wave crew to be considered among the largest waves, which are a bit smaller, like Mavericks or Jaws, and, because these hellmen dont feel the wave breaks as hard from top to bottom. Although I've been a surfer for over thirty years, I find it amazing that they dont consider this a legitimate "largest wave". Simply, it does not have the power of the spots I mentioned; CRAZY!

It's so crazy! It's literally like a game of chance. I'm surprised they don't show deaths related to surfing more often. It makes sense they would train for breath underwater. They can't train any other way for breath.

I LOVE watching this shit, especially in person, but you can have it. I got caught in a rip current in Florida's little waves and that was enough for me. Mad respect to surfers.

24 years ago I would surf triple overhead. Scary as heck, this is insane. Now at 1' overhead and I'm a bit worried. Lol!
Nazare and Belharra only at 5 and 4 th places ???? (ah ah ah). But Carlos Burle, Garett McNamara and Andrew Cotton have surfed 100 ft waves at Nazare. Ok, Teahupo is the most dangerous (not Maverick), and Jaws can be huge. But the biggest waves are at Nazare and Belharra, not Jaws and Marvericks or Teahupo.

Big waves at those place I agree but teahupoo is like crashing over 2 foot of water over the reef. Waves push over a 150 foot drop on to those reefs.

Personally tahiti is the most dangerous I think because the thickness of the wave is so big and the water is shallow but personally my own opinion

The pipeline wave must be amazing, the Jaw is the only i see to be comparable with the Nazare swell, but from all the one exposed here, the Nazare is by far the more dangerous place, its way more chaotic, and more unpredictable, and you plus get the really big ones...
KillingJoker nazare is actually one of the more easy big wave spots, it has no barrel and just rolls and has minimal chop most of the time so it's easy go hold your rail. Mavericks or Chopoo are the definition of difficult.
no Cloudbreak, Ghost Trees, Todos Santos, Dungeons, Waimea Bay, Pedra Branca (Tasmania), The Right (Western Australia).... and The Wedge? Come on... it maxes out at 12-15 feet.

godisbollocks i’m with you, The wedge?? Hahaha! And Waimea Bay is only the most infamous big wave spot in the history of surfing and holds The Eddie only when it gets 40-50 ft. Pipeline is not a big wave spot either.

I would rather wipe out at nazare, over shipstearns or teahupoo. I know it's the biggest but it's a crumbly break. That being said I've only road about a 12 foot wave hehe.

Although it will most likely never be surfed at its biggest due to its location, Cortez Bank can produce surf that is probably 20-25% larger than Nazare. Nazare may well always hold the record, but I know some of the pioneers that surfed Cortez early (like Mike Parsons, Brad Gerlach) witnessed waves larger than anything that has been seen at Nazare.
Sorry man But i realy doubt that.
First, Cortez bank was knowed in the big wave surfing comunity as a must, way before Nazaré came to Public eyes.
And i remember to see them (the big wave surfers) in "Surfer" magazine, way before, the name of Nazaré, was knowed around the world.
I started to surf with 11 and in the earlyer's 80's, and along the way i started to know big wave (thats my obssession) riders, like Mark foo (Who in the middle 80's was credited for surfing the biggest wave ever, filmed...at Waimea bay. Mike Parsons, Ross Clark Jones, and others.
They were the truely amazing "Daredevils" of the surfing world.

Those claims, to start, There are not a single photo of such waves, At Cortez.
And its impossible for a surfer,, to claim that he saw, 130 foot waves, while in the water or boat.Never happen. Its impossible without today's techology, mesure such waves, only by Eye.
But in Nazaré you can, because you are There in the cliff, seing those Monster waves breaking Just 100 meters, in front of you. And that its real.
I live 60 kms from Nazaré, and been There hundreds of times, and seen wit my eyes, those Monster walls of water breaking in front of me. No other place in the world you can see, waves that size breaking so close to you.
Its the scariest thing i ever seen in my Life. The sheer Size and Sound of those "Freaks" breaking, its an Lifetime experience. Because, 100 foot sweels dont happen everyday or even year.
I was Lucky to be There on the day, the record was broken, and even then, i and (and hundreds of hundreds of people) seen, even bigger waves, without no one taking the risk, breaking on the cliff side.
The sound its Unbalivable.
Cortez it big, But Nazaré, its Bigger way Bigger. And you can see and feel that for yourself, Just by going There on a big day, seat and enjoy.

You say that Mike Parsons or Brad witnessed waves larger that anything has seen in Nazaré. Sorry man,but i dont buy that. First when Parsons or Brad go to a place like Cortez bank,there are always guys with cameras with them,as you know it. So it's pretty obvious if there were 125 foot waves breaking there,photos or footages would many, many years to come out. Even before Nazaré,way before.
The thing is,to make a claims,you have to prove it,and the thing with Mike Parsons,its a Simple envy and Jealousy case, for not be able to Ride waves like in Nazaré and being recorded at the same time.
I Surf for 46 years now,and understand very well the mindset of some surfers.
And how it hurts not be able to reach certain "life objectives".
Ive been in Nazaré several times in big,big days,as i did in the most notorious big surf places in the world,and none of them comes close to Nazaré.

Teahupoo is so much faster than any other wave that if you're not pointing your boards toward land then you're getting sucked over. Turning into the wave means you're going over the falls and into a few feet of water in the lagoon ending with boo boo's all over your body...HA! If that doesn't get you then the foam ball will.
