  • Doughclub Episode 3: Reacting to the Editorial in the Lowell Sun "New Arrivals, your Job is to Learn English".
This editorial is a tone-deaf plea to English learners asking for them to learn to speak English. It tries to frame its xenophobic statement through data from a study discussing the economic benefit of learning English. The article fails to understand the various struggles the people of Lowell face during the height of a global pandemic.
The Doughclub will always stand for a place of inclusion and positivity and we hope to discuss non-inclusive statements like these will help educate us in creating a more sustainable community for everyone.

I agree to a partial degree. I'm learning a variety of languages via duolingo (Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and a little Hindi). It's more to expand my horizons.
Communication is golden, I do believe it's appropriate to learn key points of a language especially in business. However I believe it's up to those who live in desired communities to assimilate just in case.
Just like in Europe it's not unusual for Europeans to know their native language as well as English.
Learning a new language when you have people to learn with is fun.
Keep up the great content Justin. 😎👍

Thank you for the comment. Wouldn’t say I disagree with what you said. I would just urge people to be welcoming and supportive when it comes to cultural assimilation.
