Harold had an aircraft mechanic shop behind my hanger. Nice guy. I never even knew Harold was at D-Day for years, he never mentioned it, and I never asked him about it. We just talked about airplanes and such. A few days after 9-11, I had heard on the radio that the grounding of aircraft had been lifted, so I cranked up my plane and taxied to the end of the runway. Harold came down the runway in his vehicle and told me the aircraft grounding had not been lifted, so I taxied back to the hanger. Soon after I got to the hanger, an army attack helicopter came flying over the airport. Not sure if that was a coincidence or not, but I sure appreciated Harold letting me know what the situation was.

I'm honored to say my dad landed on omaha beach that morning of June 6th with the 147th combat engineers. I'm also lucky enough to say my parents were from the greatest generation. My dad made it to 90 yrs. He passed 4-1-13. He used his last life energies to help my loving mom. She had alzheimers & suffered from a stroke. She lived 5 yrs after my dad passed. It was my greatest honor to help them every day. I miss them more than words can say.
Thanks for sharing. I had a similar experience. My dad landed D +3 . His war was just starting. Wounded, captured and escaped pow hospital returned to duty. I cared for my mother and father in their end. Dad passed 6 months after my mom. At 89 and 79 respectfully.

I know it’s been three years since your post, but, as a younger American, I will ALWAYS be in a debt of gratitude to The Greatest Generation. When I start to complain (about who knows what and whenever), I come back to these stories (and posts), which humble me greatly. My grandparents were from that generation. I miss them dearly. 🙏🏻
We live in a day when the last surviving men of this duty still walk above this ground. Honor these men and these actions. The Greatest Generation will soon leave us.
You are correct. My dad landed on omaha beach that morning, he passed 4-2-13 at 90 yrs. Great man. He had a brother who fought in the pacific during WW2. He passed earlier this year. He made it to 97. Damn i miss those guys. I'm honored to say i helped them both every day especially towards the ends of their legendary lives.

Thank you. I just got back from my dad's gravesite. I put a flag above his headstone, as i do every june 6th in honor of d-day. Today is the 76th anniversary of the Normandy landings. 🇺🇸

My grandfather was a ww2 paratrooper, infantryman in Korea, and worked in the Signal Corps during Vietnam. He served in Combat in Korea and I think a little bit in ww2 but he wasn’t at the invasion of France. His best friend, that he met during Vietnam, was in the 18th infantry during D-Day. He was at Utah Beach and was injured and he received a Purple Heart and bronze star. They are both gone now. The two best men I’ll ever know in my entire life. Rest In Peace:

Korea was a hell of a lot tougher than D Day, for sure. In D Day, they were facing a few Germans who were soon killed. Most of them didn't have a single bullet fired at them. In Korea, soldiers faced thousands of charging Chinese and Korean soldiers, with hand to hand combat. No comparison.
SugarTomAppleRoger Yeah, my grandpa served on the front line and one time mentioned how cold it was in those mountains with no warm clothing. He had the scars and medals to prove how tough it was, he had grenade shrapnel blown into his shoulder, and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Battlefield Commission. He went through a lot there, killing people, seeing people get killed, almost being killed, etc. and he lived with it for over 67 years up until he died in 2017. He never had ptsd or anything, but he never talked about his experiences.
I remember one time, as a kid, I was at my friend's house for an occasional sleepover, and that night, we wake up to a weeping sound. At first, we were pretty scared and afraid of what it was due to us being pussies, but once we got a hold of ourselves, we found out that the sound was coming from my friend's grandpa's room. He was crying uncontrollably that night and couldn't handle himself. When we asked him what was wrong, he began telling us the story of when he was on those beaches.
"I was on the beaches in one of the boats, with my best friend from Elementary. We were pulling up on the beach, an immediate bang sound rings in my head, so loud to the point of where my body just gives up on me. I couldn't move, and I was stuck on the side of the boat. I could only look around and once I look to the right, I see my best friend laying there. Arm looking like it was ripped out, guts hanging outside of his body, and only 3/4 of his head was intact. I couldn't do anything but cry and think that I was so helpless."
And that night was the night that I witnessed the small fraction of the horrors that come from war.

As a former combat medic with the 82nd Airborne, I did two tours in Afghanistan. I doubt this man will see my comment, but I hope he and those like him, as well as those that have already passed... I hope they know how much respect myself and those I served with have for them. Many of them were drafted and still went, against a powerful enemy, and fought tooth and nail for every inch of ground. My heart feels heavy for those men that endured so much, God bless you sir.

His appreciation for the medics was very touching.
When I was standing on Omaha Beach a few years ago, I looked up at what those troops had to cross and climb over while under attack, I remember marveling that any of those brave men had survived. There was no cover to speak of-their only hope was getting off that beach. I don’t know how they did it.
The American Cemetery at Omaha Beach is one of the most sacred and peaceful places I have ever been. Those graves are so well-maintained. The cemetery is pristine. Those who died continue to be shown great respect in death.
We will never have men like this again. They are a truly unique generation.

Im of german decent my Grandfather was on the beach, he was German he was forced into the battle and didnt want to kill a single soul, and didnt want his other german buddies to die either though. He got shot 3 times by allies in the leg, chest, and arm and managed to live but was injured badly, a day later the allies approached the beach, and saw him he said he was suprised to see that some were still merciful to Germans, he got taken care of and didn't want to talk about what happened much those few days, but I mourn for both sides who were forced to fight even when they didn't want to. I hear most of the allies suffered but the majority of Germans fought in fear and alot didn't want to. He loved both sides very much and unfortunately ended up on the Germans he moved to the USA later on but had alot of people judge him because of that and had ptsd and didn't talk to many after that but its sad to hear how many people must of gone through the same thing and worse and the people who died and got burried by the sand the bombs threw over them so to speak.

I started tracing my ancestry and just found out this year that I had a great uncle that died on the the beach that day. He was 19. He’s buried in France. My cousin is an Army Ranger and I told him about it and he said he had no idea either and that a bunch of them usually go there every year on the anniversary and it’s going to be an even more special trip now.

My grandfather served in the US Army during WWII. Unfortunatley he passed away when I was a child, I never got to thank him, his stories went untold. Thank you guys for what you do for our WWII veterans,
I would have loved to have asked my grandfather about his experiences, but he passed away when mom was a little girl. Actually both grandfathers passed away when my folks were young and I don't know if dad's dad served or not. I know one of my great uncles did, and that I only found out after both he and my great aunt passed. I remember being really young, I'm talking under five, and going to their place. But I was too young at the time to even realize the war had existed. Then we moved out of the area for a while and when we moved back my folks always talked about going to visit them at their place but never did. By that time I was in my teens and knew about the war and had an interest in it. We'd see them at family get togethers for the holidays but I never even thought about the fact that he might have served. Even at his funeral I never realized he'd been in the war. It was only after my great aunt passed and we were helping to remove some of the stuff from their house did I see a plaque on the wall that said he'd served in the war, and if memory serves it said he'd been part of D-Day. I really wish now I'd thought to ask him about it. Maybe he'd have wanted to share stories with me, maybe not. I'll never know now.
My grandfathers brothers served in the pacific theatre in the Second World War, my grandfather never talked about them neither my mother never heard about them. Thank you for your service ❤️

My grandfather lost both his legs in that war from 2 separate attacks. After it was over, he was among the first veterans to receive the hand controls to operate a vehicle without using your legs. Later on he just learned to drive with his wooden prosthetic legs and did so for years - legally! Many people never knew he wore them cause he didn’t let that stop him from going on with life. When i was young i can remember him walking behind a push mower and climbing up ladders. And oh yes he would fall from time to time. I believe it was his faith in God and his faithful wife (over 50 yrs) that kept him going. I grew up sitting on his lap after he had his bath and took “his legs off”. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him so much joy. I’m grateful for his sacrifice and that i was able to know him.

I sometimes try to imagine it, but it is just full of fear and horror. I am a coward when it comes to imagining what would happening if I was in war, but sometimes i wish i was a ww2 soldier so a man who fought could live a better life and i could sacrifice myself

My Great Grandfather was a WWII Navy veteran He sadly died in 2017 at age 98 I could try to send you some stories I have recorded of his
Same my great grandfather was on the Portuguese reserves if hitler invaded and he said to his Commander "how will we defeat hitlers forces" and his commander said "we will give them trouble" as the Portuguese were noted as some of the best fighters in the world

Robbie my grandpa was a radio tech on the LCI 22 Flag ship in the South Pacific. He recalls all of his memories as if it was yesterday! He just turned 99 on May 7th. My other grandfather fought in the battle of Normandy on DDay. He soon got Hodgkins Lymphoma after returning and passed away age 32. I wish I could’ve been able to know him and hear his experiences. I do know that he suffered from “shell shock” and spent some time in a Colorado Springs asylum after returning.

My great Uncle George Weaver fought the Germans in Italy. He only told stories when he was drinking. I would be the beer getter kid & get the priveledge of sitting quietly & hearing all the WWII combat stories. Uncle George was my hero alongside my grandpa who also served fighting the Germans. I seem to remember Anzio was a bad one for him. Miss the old guys & their stories. Made a kid think. Now I'm the old guy. I went on to be a Marine & served in Desert Shield & Storm. Funny how easy it is to serve when you've been around such great examples. Miss them all. 😢

My grandfather was in the British Royal Engineers and he fought in campaigns out in Burma fighting the Japanese and in Europe against the Germans. On D-Day he landed on Sword Beach. When I hear these accounts of what the allied veterans went through I have nothing but pride and admiration for their services to ensuring all of our freedoms that we have today. I also think how fortunate I was to have my grandfather in my life for him to survive such a horrific War, and how I wouldn't be here to make this comment if he hadn't got back home. I now have a 9 month old son, his great grandson who shares the same middle name "Oswald", sadly my grandfather passed in 2001, but he lives on in me and my son. Its videos like these I can show my son in the future so we can never forget and learn from their stories to hopefully never repeat what they had to do.
I have a 7 year old and whenever we see a veteran she always tells them thank you for your service and it makes me proud.
Keep raising that child the right way. She makes me proud too.

Call me a puss but I did cry, especially when he talked about the medics I had a neighbor named Tony that was a medic on that day. He was a great man and a great friend.

Every time do you hear a veteran talk about their experiences and their voice begins to crack, you can tell how traumatic of an experience it is to recall these memories . My heart breaks for each and every one of them, I just want to say thank you to each and every one of them.
My great uncle was a medic in WW2 and managed to survive and make it home after the war. He was very quiet and reserved when I knew him when I was a little boy. He would make us sling shots out of forked sticks we would find. He only talked about the war with my gramma, and then, only very rarely if he'd had a few drinks. My gramma told me that he'd seen "terrible, terrible things" in the war. Sadly, he became an alcoholic and died with unreleased horrors still reverberating in his mind.

Every time I watch these videos. it makes me want to find a local veteran from ww2, and bow down to them and thank them for their sacrifice. As a way of showing gratitude.

Thank you. My grandfather shared stories like this while he was still alive. He was a war hero, very decorated, one of the founder's of the blue angels. I miss him so much. I miss him and I'd do anything to listen to one of his stories again. Every day I think of the men who died for me, for you, and for everyone else. They gave us the chance to live a free life and that is something we will never be able to repay. I am extremely grateful for those men who took part in the war for our sake. It reminds me to be grateful for what I have and not take anything for granted.

My great uncle was on D-Day, at Gold beach. He said that as soon as the door dropped, four of the I believe 12 men he said were on his landing craft were torn down. Only 5 people from his craft made the beach, and 2 of them made it to Berlin. Rest In Peace, Harold Oates, 1921-2020.

I swore into the U.S Navy on 6/6/2019. It was surreal realizing that my great grandfather was storming Utah beach 75 years prior. My other great grandfather served in the U.S Navy as well during the same time frame. Watching these videos it amazes me, and makes realize what it really means to serve. Thank you for all those who have served before me, and those who will serve after. It’s an honor to be apart of something so much larger than myself.

You just know that during those quiet moments, he was back on that awful beach reliving and seeing everything he experienced. When he came home, there were no therapists to listen and try to counsel him and his fellow fighters. They all had to forge ahead with their lives and do the best they could. God bless him and all the men and women of his generation for what they endured and suffered through during that horrible war. May we never forget.
I can't put into words the way I feel when I watch and hear the first hand accounts of the Men and Women the went to war for us!!!! My Grandfather served in the Airforce as a Bomber Pilot and Flight Instructor during WW2. He did not tell many stories and was very quiet about what he did and saw but from my understanding he or his squad was part of the BIG bomb drops in Japan. WHAT A GENERATION!!!! Men among Men.....True heros that saved the world as we know it!!! Without documented accounts like this the lessons learned and the Scale of what was accomplished will be lost. I cant even imagine what our veterans have seen and gone through! We must

My great great aunt was at the women who wrote the transcript of the Yalta conference. She didn’t say a word about what happened even after it was unclassified. Sadly she died last November and we couldn’t get any stories from her.

I have been blessed and honored to meet 2 gentlemen that survived the beaches of Normandy. I was so honored to take care of their medical needs and to thank them from the depths of my soul.
Sitting here on my sofa, in my safe place. I cant imagine the horror these lads had to endure this day, 75 years ago.

Mein Urgroßvater diente im Zweiten Weltkrieg in einer Kommandotruppe und teilte seine Geschichten erst mit, als er starb. Er war definitiv kein Mörder (Rechtschreibprüfung ist eine wunderbare Sache)

Please, talk to every WWII vet you know or see. They all have such a unique story to tell and in the near future there will be none left to speak to. I have been speaking to them since I was a kid and my grandfather's would tell me there stories. So I implore you, take a few minutes, listen to their story, share a smile, laugh, tear
I think you will see it will touch you as much for listening as it touches them for telling it.
My grandpa was a medic in the Vietnam war and he’s told me too many stories of being treated like garbage coming back to the states from the war or saving or not being able to save lives and this video really puts into perspective how much hardship this American heroes went through to fight for our freedom. Thank you to all for your service and fighting to give us our freedom

It feels me with great pride and sorrow i had two great grand fathers that served and only one ever spoke to us about it once for a school report.
I’ll never forget the look in his eyes, like he was watching it all over again. How blessed we are for the many that gave all during this war, and the ones who returned home. Like mentioned we are the last generation to see and speak to these folks.

I'm a german teenager and seeing this pushed the tears into my eyes, knowing that even today there is war in so many different places . I can't understand why on earth people have to do such things . I can't really say what i want to because my english is not the best but I am scared ... seriously scared of what could happen in the near future . We can't imagine what this Veteran must have seen and I personally do not want to experience the same things . Why does the human has to be like that . I don't understand why you would choose power, money etc. over peace...
Why do we have to fight for almost everything? Why can't people just work for everyone's good . Humans just think about what is best for themselves and that's what makes me sad and angry.
I've got the highest respect possible for the men and women fighting for their country and freedom but I believe war won't end anytime soon in the future and peace will never exist on the whole planet .. there will always be human individuals trying to get more power and money and therefore war, destitution, anxiety, .... will never come to an end.
Although I am a lot older than you, it's amazing how much we think alike....in so many way's..... I've often thought the same thing.... wasting people's lives for money, land and oil... it's a SHAME what people will do to each other for greed. Maybe one day we will have gotten enough of people dying , for such petty things. I don't understand what or how long it will take to get to the stopping point..... I sincerely wish it would.... for everyone's sake... But I doubt it ever will.

i cried watching this, because my grandpa lived through this hell aswell, and my great granpa lived in Holland in WW2, and he hid an allied pilot and jews on their farm, and were taken to a german concentration camp, thankfully they survived. god bless all those veterans out their who brought us the chance to live the life we live now and if any veteran reads this, I just want to say thank you so much for what you did. : )
