      And* then an ad came up around 30 seconds later
      Edited for typo. Also, I think the ad was timed randomly by an algorithm (an algorithm that knows what part of the video we are all skipping to). Wasn't accusing Thomas of putting the ad there.

    For a guy who I have found to be the most articulate, intelligent, well prepared, well researched, sharp, focused - you have no reason to be so self-critical. Your content brings health to a new level and I have been a sponge for a decade on TH-cam (new sub). You do a great service. Keep up the great work.

    This totally makes sense and thank you for addressing this. I am loving my 16-8 hour fasting right now, just beginning. I think I will do it 4 days a week for now and then move on to a longer fast. Thank you for addressing this. I was thinking about doing this forever and now I see the importance of doing it 3-4 X a week. Thank you!

    Just so everyone that hates on the longer live videos knows, There is actually a huge reason for making them longer, and it’s to benefit you as the subscriber or viewer.
    1) People come and go on these broadcasts throughout the entire thing. I am doing what I can to answer questions while also engaging and repeating the topic.
    Imagine this: you come into the video at minute 15:00 when I’m live. And I’ve already covered the information in minutes 2-5. You’d have to skip back to minutes 2-5 and miss the entire LIVE portion of the video, which is the purpose of doing it in the first place.
    So, by reiterating what the meat of the topic is, I get the opportunity to engage with a lot of people.
    2) there are algorithms at play. TH-cam doesn’t serve this video to everyone all at once. So in order to get people on the video, I need to ramp it up and get more people going (inviting to share, like, comment) etc.
    3) This is supposed to be interactive and LIVE. If I just wanted to spill our information, i would do it as the other 3-5 FREE videos per week that I post up. So yes, it’ll be longer because I want the chance to say hello to my fans and followers.

    What a sweetheart this guy is. I started watching his channel because of his practical tips on fasting and I keep tuning in for other nutrition facts and especially about staying in ketosis (because being in ketosis FEELS SOooo good for me - I have an inflammatory illness and being in ketosis means no pain); and Thomas's videos offer the most rubber-hits-the-road information that I've found to date (plus he's so transparent with his audience).
    I think it's also good to remember that everyone fasts - provided you eat dinner around 6 or 7pm then STOP eating after that then sleep and don't break your fast until break-fast the next day you are giving your liver a time-out and for some people that may be enough; for others of us more prolonged fasts are required in order to achieve our desired health goals (I've come to see fasting not as deprivation but as a favor I am doing my body).

    • @davilfs
      @davilfs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Susie, I also have an inflamattory condition (ankylosing spondylitis), and I've being practicing IF (mostly around 16:8) for 2 years. Great results in my well being in general, but I'm trying to rearrange it to do longer fasts (did it twice, 40h and 105h, the last one results were unbelievable), and not being very strict every day, so I can have my antioxidants shots at morning, and also not to fell very stuff between the meals on 8h windows. I got curious how do you perceive your inflammations according to the lenght of fasting. Wish to have more knowledge about that, because inflammation crisis are the worst things on Earth. Cheers and health to you.

    Mix it up. Feast and famine. Our bodies were meant to go through lean periods and bounty periods. Seasonal changes brought about different food sources or lack thereof. What it wasn't meant for was cramming Frankenstein food constantly into our bodies. This has brought about great changes in my life. Somedays I do 16, some 20, somedays feast. Humans are adaptive beings. Be that. Great videos sir.

    Because of this information I have reserved the weekends as the 2 days that I have a bigger eating window and what I find is on those days my body seems to know it's feeding time. Monday seems to be the day of re-adjusting to the fasted state but it's tolerable and I get a big workout in. It's working for me. I have lost about 20 pounds within 2 months.

I’m now following your advice and doing IF every other day for longer 20/4. Hopefully my skin will plump back up with the increase in calories on non fasting days. Thanks so much!

  • @anambivalentenemy

    I got your point Thomas.
    But....
    1)What if you consume sufficient calories and nutrients in your fasting window? Is it ok then to fast every day?
    2)When you say to fast,you always mean 18-20 hours?You don't recommend 16/8 fast?Because that's what i'm doing for the last 70 days consecutively.And i see some big results,i got to say.
    In the 2 days off fasting of the week, you recommend us to eat breakfast? And what if we aren't hungry? What if our bodies has gotten accustomed to fasting?Should we push ourselves to eat,no matter how hungry we are?
    3)And finally, what about insulin levels? You have said in your videos that each time we consume calories, insulin rises. And that the optimal for fat burning is keeping insulin low,by eating 2-3 meals a day.Am i correct? So,on our off fasting days,if we eat breakfast won't we eat more times in that day?Or,what you say is consuming 3 meals again, but spread evenly throughout the day,and not eating 4 or 5 times?
    I wish you could answer me.Thanks!!!

    This is an important video - thanks for posting. I run into a lot of people in the IF and EF communities who've experienced some benefits from fasting, and concluded that they should do some form of it virtually full time. The danger, as you point out, is that they'll be building up a deficit of some key nutrients over time.
    Some of the most cutting edge research related to the benefits of fasting has been done by Dr. Valter Longo, who states clearly that the true benefit comes during the re-feed. For example, an extended fast of several days will start clearing the body of senescent tells. Then, when we re-feed at the end of the fast, the body uses the nutrients in the food to create new stem cells. This is a profoundly rejuvenating process, but can only happen if we provide the body with ample nutrients when we're NOT fasting.

      Hello, MPHO.
      I think I struggled with my weight since I was a child; I wasn't obese, but coming from a very conservative family, I was the black sheep because I didn't fit within the esthetic values and that made me gain weight through the years.
      By the time I was in my twenties, my weight was pretty much in control but I wasn't in shape.
      Bad marriage made me gain almost 100 pounds.
      I confess I turned to bariatric surgery and lost almost all the extra weight.
      I had a gastric band but IT WAS PURE TORTURE AND NOTHING THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND.
      Stopped using the torture instrument all together (gastric band is adjustable) and dedicated to take care of my weight the natural way.
      Tried many diets and struggled immensely.
      Then I discovered ketosis and after that, intermittent fasting.
      Got gastric band removed, and felt I was reborn.
      I'm fifty next year, in the best shape of my life strong and lean.
      People believe that I've been an athlete all my life but I started working out at 37.
      I have Hashioto's and still keep my weight under control and feel great.
      It has been a magnificent journey and I'm thankful for what I've achieved.
      It's doable, it's achievable, GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!

    I'm a 57 yr old woman who started fasting, usually 18-24 hrs 6times a week mainly as a way to reduce inflammation in my body and the beginning of arthritis and it has helped so much, along with helping me lose the extra weight I haven't been able to lose in the past 7 years. What you explained makes so much sense, and I now plan to reduce the hours and days. My question is more about autophagy, and how can I achieve it if I'm not fasting beyond 17 hours, besides getting all those wonderful benefits of longer fasts like growth hormone, cell repair...? Thank you for your clear, informative and well researched videos; I only recently started watching them, and I'm learning so much.

      Mostly empirical evidence - no athlete, in any sport, from strength athletes to football or basketball practitioners, practice Intermittent Fasting, nor does any sports coach endorse it. Why in the world would you want to raise your cortisol levels AND fuck up your stomach/gastric acid levels by not eating for such prolonged periods of time?!
      Also, anyone promoting strong, black coffee on an empty stomach is just... idiotic, to say the least. Not only can it cause stomach burns, but the liver will have a much harder time processing the caffeine without the rest of the enzymes released to digest food.

    Very well explained. SUPER EFFECTIVE FASTING. Avoiding our system to become tolerant to fasting, that’s what makes fasting super effective. It’s seems that is the same principle when building mass, if we keep giving the same stimulation to the muscles, they adapt and stop growing. The same thing applies to fasting. People normally get too excited about methodologies that prove to have astonishing results and pretty often we end up taking things to an extreme spoiling the power of a method. Moderation is the key in everything we do in life, moderation is the secret, in other words balance. Extreme fasting: meaning fasting everyday it’s just insane and not sustainable , and in a long term it will work against us. So...thanks for everything man, I respect and admire your work brother. I consider this video the most important one from all the videos you have posted. Many thanks and God bless you. Keep up the amazing work, those who have ears and do the right research will always support your Chanel.

      Marc Schmidt what did you change please? I went from 175lbs to 135lbs in almost three months. I’m Too skinny now . But I got a nice six pack. I wait 16-18 hours then eat around 3-4pm. I eat 4-6 strips of bacon, very large salad, one chicken Breast with the skin . 2-4 spoons of ranch . 2-4 spoons of mayo. A big handful of cheese. A 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. And a yogurt parfait with blue berries and a handful of granola. Then around 10pm I eat almost the same amount at my first meal. I’m eating big so “my metabolism doesn’t go down and eat my muscles.”( is that correct) I just started weightlifting after a 3 months pause. So now what? Now I only intermitten fast 5 days a week? I’ve gotten use to it and I like it but I guess too much Is bad

      Christopher Rogers i do an omad style of fasting myself. I’m working my way to the 23:1 split but currently doing a 20:4 IF everyday in my one meal i easily pick foods and amounts of food to easily reach 1900-2200 calories which is really the range i need to be for a healthy deficit. So doing it every day is easy for me and it certainly won’t lower my BMR not everyone could do that for sure but it’s what’s working for me.

      I agree. I'm 5'1" 110lbs but I can easily pack in 1500-1800 clean calories in 2-4 hour window(OMAD) especially on Ketogenic diet. I do fat loading once in every 2~3 weeks and weekly protein fast. I workout 5 days/week around 4 hours prior to breaking my fasting-usuall with bone broth followed by a big vegetable plate(raw/cooked, 50/50) with clean proteins & fats. I also incorporate 3~5 water only fasting about every 3 months. Feels amazing, endless energy-4 kids & 25 hour work outside home-improved cognitive function, faster recovery, deeper sleep.

    Lifestyle changes as life changes. You don't have to fast every day because life isn't going to be the same every day. Discipline is freedom. But discipline doesn't mean the same thing every day; it means structuring your life with standards. It means setting standards, meeting the standard, or failing to meet the standard and choosing to rebuild that structure rather than giving up. Adjust frequently with small changes; you'll find that you were already successful soon after the start and your adjustments are simply ways of re-inventing ways to succeed.

I‘ve lost 22Kg and got back to shape after years of being overweight. I am now in maintenance mode, still doing IF 16/8 but getting KCal to maintain the weight. I will now follow your suggestion and get 2 days/Week eating normally, 3-4 doing IF 16/8 and 1-2 days on 20/4, with enough KCal to maintain weight and muscle mass. Cheers from Switzerland (Zurich)!

But have been doing every day. I've dropped 40lbs. But like you said, it's hard to eat more than 1200-1500 cals in the narrow eating window, and was burning around 800-1200 exercising. I still have about 80lbs to go and don't want to screw up the BMR, but how do you know if you have? And if I did, how can I fix it?

  • @NorthOlbo
    @NorthOlbo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    I stopped listening at 13 minutes, became kind of circular discussion...but from what Ive read, one of the reasons keto and IF work so well it returns us to our evolved state of eating. That also means that food consumption is irregular, ie dont always skip breakfast, or have one meal at the same time everyday. Or night! Mix it up...keep challenging your body with IF, then three meals, then no meals, then a later meal, then breakfast. Its how we evolved and stops the regular “dawn effect” and ghrelin/insulin hormonal patterns as we become conditioned to OMAD (one meal a day) and our BMR (basal metabolic rate) starts to drop accommodating these cycles. Its more fun too and lets you accommodate dinner with friends, family, travelling etc without getting weird about “I cant eat right now I’m in my fasting cycle”...mixing it up makes you stronger and healthier! Just keep your macros on target...more or less...

It's the same with weight training, you cant run the same routine lifting the same weights day in and day out and expect to continue getting the same or consistent results. That's the reason periodization and progressive overload works so well. Have to mix it up every once in a while!

    But its not the fasting in itself that decreases your BMR right? It's the low calories that does that no? Reason is I do the 23 hour fast regularly, but because I love to overeat, so its a reward system for me, It allows me to eat around 1900-2300 calories in one meal, which I don't have a problem in consuming all at once.

Good to hear that as long as I keep my calorie count/nutrition up it is doable and will not reduce my BMR... something I was very concerned about and one of the main reasons I started fasting(heard it wouldn't reduce my BMR like calorie reduced diets do).

    Here is the deal. Most people cannot do the same routine over and over and achieve the same results. We need to trick our body and always keep it trying to catch up. Break up your exercises, break up your supplementation, break up your food intake and what you eat. If you have variety you will keep your body from stagnating and getting used to any one regime. It is true, break a fast, then do some exercise. Then eat some high caloric vegetables, then take your supplements every other day. Take some then take different ones. This is a game changer because your body will never get used to the same thing, therefore making the thing more effective. I do believe there is science to this as well.

    LoL. You've have not seen me eat....
    But seriously consistency and habits are key. Switching back and forth may be OK for some but for others it's really hard to be constantly switching gears.

      I think the point here in easy words and simple is that if you fast every day your you stressing your body to a point that is slowing down burning fat and going to a survival mode so it burns slower and learns to leave with little . That would work for 2 percent of people that can be so strict and do it for years. But for someone who let’s say do it for 2-3 months and then enter a situation where he can control the eating and psychologically he is not that strong like others and he start eating more and uncontrollable, then the body until it get used to this new reality will store everything on fat and as it doesn’t understand this new reality will absorb as much fat as it can get and you destroy what you build within 2 weeks for example while someone who was fasting as he recommends will burn more fat with each fasting day while also if for some days will go out of the program with not have such bad impact like the case when you fast every day for a long period of time

    FYI, Thomas is loquacious in this one, just go to the 6:00 mark to get the answer to the Topic.

      Thank you! Good content here but not sitting through a 25 minute video that "clarifies" a 7 minute video. Don't have that kind of time.

      Y’all have to remember that I have to make these live feeds a bit longer to accommodate all the people that come and go during a live feed. So it’s not that I’m just slow at getting to the point. There are algorithms at play and I want to reach as many as possible while live vs those that just rewatch.

    Hmmmm this makes sense. I started at 425 lbs. dropped 140 lbs using a 4/20 (or 20/4)daily. I have plateaued at 280 for several months. I'd like to lose another 100 so perhaps I should consider eating more hours a couple of days a week.

    I was doing 20/4 hour fast 6-7 days a week, but weight loss was/is slow. When I heard Thomas DeLauer say I shouldn’t fast every single day, yesterday, I went crazy and just ate any and everything all day long at work. My dinner was chicken vegetable soup and a huge chef’s salad. I drink a glass of red wine every day. One glass and that’s it. I have these Spanish glasses that are variable sizes and I used the smallest glass and fill it halfway up 4x and I experimented with it and water and poured it into a regular wine glass and it’s true! I may fill my Spanish glass 1/2 up, 4x and it measures a regular wine glass, so I’m good with that. I thought I had to give up my wine. I am very active at work 5x a week, so I’m not at my desk all day; as a matter of fact, I rarely have a chance to sit at all during the day. I’ll fast every other day from this day forth.

    This makes sense as a professional coach I always teach my clients to build muscle to increase their long term bmr. And intermittent fasting can be taylored to your lifestyle and goals. I too play with 12, 14, or even 15 hour non feeding windows and still lift. The thing I noticed is that it did take a good 3 weeks for my body to get used to lifting on this routine and gradually keep my strength. However, I did this on black coffee and green tea. Thomas if you can chime in and give me your thoughts?

    Can we fast everyday if we ensure that we get the ~2,000 calories in our eating window?

    • @francescovaldini6940
      @francescovaldini6940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Exactly the same question, nobody can explain this to me. If I just eat my normal calories within a 4hr window, couldn't you do it everyday? Somebody help :)

      If you fast and keep eating the same 2000 everyday, the fast doesn't work. Fast works when you cut. For example, eat 1500 during your eating period. Then, the days you break your fast eat the 2000 to ensure fast keeps burning efficiently the next time you fast again

      @@darklaw7635 Nice. Do you happen to have come across some literature in the subject? I'd love to dive in the details to try understanding why it is so the case.

      @@redlipmarketing867 personal experience, 8t has worked for me. Eating period is one to my calorie maintenance level, next day, cut down the next day back to maintenance and so on.... This way, your metabolism keeps burning fat when you cut and doesn't reset your maintenance level.

    Hmmm Dr. Jason Fung and Dr Berg say that the difference between calorie restrictive diet and fasting is that fasting DOES NOT lower your BMR which leads to a long term weight balance. You have said now that fasting lowers it. From what I've seen you've collaborated with them before, so which is it?

    • @athenasones5173
      @athenasones5173 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it is actually constant calorie restriction due to every day fasting is what lowers your BMR. If you are constantly only eating 1300 calories fie to your fasting, you will lower your BMR. But if you eat 2,000 or more on 4 days of the week, and nothing on 3 days, this does not lower your BMR.
