There's actually a video of a Korean congressman using this throw on another congressman during a fight. So, yes, these techniques can be used during a street-fight.
Great video in both senses, good instruction and coolest Uke ever! I started in Judo, did BJJ and back to Judo again, don´t know why some people still don´t want to cross train, is fun!
That's a great video, although in that case the Korean used a slight variation of this throw. This video is "yoko" tomo nage - side sacrifice technique. Notice that Joel spins sideways on his entry. In the Korean congress, the guy used the classic variation of tomo nage - he hops straight in. Both are great techniques, but they differ in the way which you get under the opponents center of gravity.
In a "street fight" this is not the technique to utilize this is a technique specific to a situation. Learning these types of techniques are more on the lines of the art part of martial arts in that its unique way in order to take your partner to the mat in a tournament. A large majority of techniques fall into this category from both Judo and BJJ. The best possible take down for self defense is Osotogari which can be done without a gi just as effectively as with one.
hi, just 1 thing, if anybody could answer this question. in a street fight ppl dont wear loose clothing so you cant hold on to any material, what would, how would you do judo move or this move?? love to hear ur response to this. ur big fan already. thanx.
MrOlivetribe - I've used this move on a couple of men who stole my car and I caught them. I did a simple sweep on one then did a rolling throw on the other by gripping the shoulder of his to my right and pulling on the wrist. it worked well. he couldn't breathe for a while after. hurt my back on concrete though.
i think this move is way too risky for a street fight. for a street fight you need to strike or close the distance. this is a mid range technique which usually means grappler ends getting beat with punches or kicks. this is a gracie combatives (street jiu jitsu) concept.

Great instructional, lots of details and well communicated. Looking forward to watching the rest!
This is the synthesis or rediscovery of what was once that makes it interesting to watch either a bjj or judo match
Wait, is this Carlos Newton, the legendary Canadian 1990s and 2000s MMA fighter casually playing demonstration dummy like he's no big deal?
Great video in both senses, good instruction and coolest Uke ever!

great detail. great video.
I don't see why the street vs. self defense debate is relevant here, he's obviously teaching a sportive technique for a sportive situation.
Im new to BJJ but I would always instinctively do a takedown like this. Now after I watched this I can refine it because it's so effective
Didn't know Paul Rudd was a black belt lol. Good throw, one of my favorites.
Awesome yoko tomoe nage instruction
Great explanation!
great details! fantastic
Luv this...you always got something good up the sleeve.....
I like it. Great video.
Good instructional!
a Black belt did this to me in sparring and got onto mount and I was flabbergasted and impressed, now I want to learn it
The ronin one of my fav fighters
If you are having the Tomoe Nage done to you how do you protect against it to prevent injury, it freaks me out how I fall?
Khari you keep your chin tucked and move like it’s a forward roll over them
sneaky move, good job

I trained with these guys when we were all brown belts. I remember Carlos was shorter than Joel. Wow, look at them now.
yeah....the music is soooo coool.....!
Carlos Newton! Exactly!!!! I still say Hughes was out....
Oh gods, Carlos Newton didn't half put on weight, did he? The fight against Pat Miletech seems like such a long time ago...

It's a good job this is a sport BJJ video and not an MMA one then, isn't it?
Paul Rudd....genius technique
fair enough but what if they wearing tshirts??!!
Use a different technique

@@MrOlivetribe yeah
CARLOS NEWTON!!!!
カーロス・ニュートン!?
BEN AFFLECK !
I thought this was Sledgehammer~
Probably with jits is... when there's punches and elbows involved ..it cant be so clean and safely executed ..maybe if you're a black belt.
