It is John's original song but Paul could easily have substituted one of John's verses by singing it himself, but he didn't, he allowed the final Beatles outing to feature John. Full respect.

Paul imitated George's style for the slide guitar. George had done some backing vocals and rhythm guitar in 94 and I think he did some lead guitar work but likely it wasn't finished when they decided to shelve this song. Paul did a masterful job, not only on the bass line but also the guitar. Ringo is rock solid, as always. I think this song is a labor of love for Paul, since John's last words to him were, "Think about me every now and then, old friend."

I grew up with the Beatles. I remember when they broke up, when John was murdered and when they tried to do this demo of John's from 1977, like they did 'Real Love' and 'Free as a bird.' They just couldn't get John's voice away from the piano in 1997. Technology today, made it possible. Still having Paul and Ringo with us, they were successful with adding and finishing John's demo. This IS their last bow. 🥺 People will still be in awe and playing their music, (especially this last one) in 50 more years. The Beatles Are timeless.
I was so jazzed for Free as a Bird and Real love ... until I heard them. Not great. Realliy disappointing thinkning we got new Beatles songs and they were ... meh. But who could imagine the one that was the worst recording of the bunch (quality wise) would 25 years later turn into a fantastic true Beatles song, and the perfect one to cap off their brilliant string of hits spanning decades. Now they belong to to the ages.

I just noticed that the ending of the outro has the same rhythm as the ending of "Here Comes the Sun." Was this an idea Paul had for George? I'm moved to tears. The groove created by Ringo's drums and Paul's bass is amazing, like a Motown beat. It's definitely a masterpiece.
Right, now that you mention it I hear the similarity to Here Comes The Sun, too ... I bet not by accident ... this song grows on me each time I listen to it, it sounds great and is very moving (but I still regret the missing bridge-part). The Beatles brought me to my profession, I owe them a lot!

Yes, I grew up with the Beatles. As Ballet students, we all would listen to them on our little transistor radios between classes and rocked! I fell in love with my husband of 54 years, with us both loving the Beatles. I lost him a few months ago ❤️ So I’m very moved by this new and last song, and two of them missing also! Paul at Glastonbury festival, I danced around the living room. So much happiness from my past, Thank you Beatles for this!

On that date, Ringo & John were 23 years old, Paul, 21, & George, 20 (2 weeks shy of 21) - that's how VERY young they really were!!! I LOVED them immediately, feelings that never waned, & they have been the most prominent & beloved band on the soundtrack of my life ever since. Naturally, I was eagerly awaiting Now And Then, & I heard it on the radio the day it was released. I liked it, & fully appreciated it for what it is. The next day, I watched the video. WOW!!!!! I had goosebumps & tears all at once . . . what a powerful, heartfelt video, accentuating phenomenally poignant lyrics in the context they were used. Just beautifully done. Stunned by how emotional it is. And I absolutely LOVE the song!!! Everyone should watch the video & love it, too!!! Without a doubt, the absolute best music video I've ever seen in all the years of music videos!!!!! A true masterpiece!!! For those who don't know -- John Lennon, who wrote this song & is singing lead, was murdered in NYC on Dec 8, 1980, 10 years after The Beatles broke up. He was 40 years old. George Harrison laid down some guitar work to this song in 1995, which is used. Sadly, he died of cancer on Nov 29, 2001, age 58. Ringo Starr (now 83), the drummer, & Paul McCartney (81) playing his iconic Hofner bass, are alive & well & still delighting audiences with their wonderful music!!!!! Antiquated Aussie here. I was 12 when the Beatles took over the airwaves here in Oz - hit after hit after hit. Most people who weren't around in the 60's don't know how much the Beatles changed the trajectory of music; they didn't just influence the music scene, they broke it! There really was no precedent for the frenzy of Beatlemania. There was never really closure for the Beatles and their millions of fans - just an uncomfortable quasi end marred by personality clashes and recriminations, John's untimely assassination, George's death and a lot of regret. I grew up with the Beatles and I must say that this song and music video is an absolute gift. And when the "ahhh... ahhh" harmonies came in it immediately took me back to the medley on the Abbey Road album. Fantastic!
One of the real reasons of them not too do the track back in the 1990.s was that George thought that the song was crap. Still they started to work on the song, like doing tracks that did not depend on the piano or vocals. The track was produced by Jeff Lynne, who was brought in by his bandmate from Travelling Wilburys, which was George. In all they made a great job with the song with lots of nice touches. You mentioned about Ringos fills with drums, something that struck me from start was Pauls piano, as it is as strong and strick as when he did Lady Madonna. It would be interesting confirmation who played the solos as George played on one and on the documentary Paul said that one of the solos was added on as a tribute to George's style of playing slide. One nice touch to me was the strings in the very end of the song as it brings it to I am a Walrus and the Indian style pieaces by George on Revolver and Sgt. Pepper. The song has been growing on me, at first I thought it was OK but but more less sounding like ELO (JeffLynnes old band from 70-s) and more like what Beatles might sound like today. I would love to have had a unpublished song by George on the flip side, though there would not be all four on the song but then again much of the work on songs on Abbey Road was done without John as he did not want to play on Mawell and he was in a hospital during the time to finish the medley. Beides George was not around much during making of Sgt. Pepper.. In all a fitting finale on the saga of Beatles, the band that created so much buzz when they released a new song 53 years after the band broke up.
I grew up with them from before Ed Sullivan. This is heart warming and heart breaking at the same time. I cry every time I hear this and the video destroys me. They knew each other from teenagers in a little band and all had the same dream and drive and achieved their goal. Lifelong brothers , two pass away and it makes me hurt to know the pain Paul and Ringo feel, every day for the loss. Pull up the Billboard Top 40 hits of 1962 and listen to a few of them. Then, listen to The Beatles; "I Feel Fine" released in 1963. By the way, the opening note on this song was the very first time that guitar feedback was used on a song. When I first heard this, all I could think was "what a fucking time to be alive". Modern technology was able to isolate John's vocals and 40 or so years after his death, place it perfectly into the final Beatles song to ever be written for the people of planet Earth to enjoy. Imagine if John and George were alive today. I think the world would be more peaceful.

It's a demo song from John's solo career he wrote in the late 70s well after the Beatles had broken up.Just because the other 3 perform on it doesn't make it a Beatles song in my view. A high court decision in early 1971 meant none of members could use the name Beatles during their solo careers unless the 4 regrouped which they never did.

For those who don't know -- John Lennon, who wrote this song & is singing lead, was murdered in NYC on Dec 8, 1980, 10 years after The Beatles broke up. He was 40 years old. George Harrison laid down some guitar work to this song in 1995, which is used. Sadly, he died of cancer on Nov 29, 2001, age 58. Ringo Starr (now 83), the drummer, & Paul McCartney (81) playing his iconic Hofner bass, are alive & well & still delighting audiences with their wonderful music!!!!!

It's nicely put together and does work . I'm not a fan of this sort of thing but As you said it's not overdone , and not their best but recognizably the Beatles . I'll definitely listen to it again .
Antiquated Aussie here. I was 12 when the Beatles took over the airwaves here in Oz - hit after hit after hit. Most people who weren't around in the 60's don't know how much the Beatles changed the trajectory of music; they didn't just influence the music scene, they broke it! There really was no precedent for the frenzy of Beatlemania.
There was never really closure for the Beatles and their millions of fans - just an uncomfortable quasi end marred by personality clashes and recriminations, John's untimely assassination, George's death and a lot of regret. Clearly this song provides closure, but you watch: it'll trigger a renaissance of Beatles music and record sales. I can't wait!🎵🎸🎹🥁

I grew up with the Beatles and I must say that this song and music video is an absolute gift. And when the "ahhh... ahhh" harmonies came in it immediately took me back to the medley on the Abbey Road album. Fantastic!

The genius of Ringo. Yes!
One of the real reasons of them not too do the track back in the 1990.s was that George thought that the song was crap. Still they started to work on the song, like doing tracks that did not depend on the piano or vocals. The track was produced by Jeff Lynne, who was brought in by his bandmate from Travelling Wilburys, which was George. In all they made a great job with the song with lots of nice touches. You mentioned about Ringos fills with drums, something that struck me from start was Pauls piano, as it is as strong and strick as when he did Lady Madonna. It would be interesting confirmation who played the solos as George played on one and on the documentary Paul said that one of the solos was added on as a tribute to George's style of playing slide. One nice touch to me was the strings in the very end of the song as it brings it to I am a Walrus and the Indian style pieaces by George on Revolver and Sgt. Pepper. The song has been growing on me, at first I thought it was OK but but more less sounding like ELO (JeffLynnes old band from 70-s) and more like what Beatles might sound like today. I would love to have had a unpublished song by George on the flip side, though there would not be all four on the song but then again much of the work on songs on Abbey Road was done without John as he did not want to play on Mawell and he was in a hospital during the time to finish the medley. Beides George was not around much during making of Sgt. Pepper.. In all a fitting finale on the saga of Beatles, the band that created so much buzz when they released a new song 53 years after the band broke up.
If you play the video to the very end, the Beatles logo disappears from the sign, like a final farewell.

I grew up with them from before Ed Sullivan. This is heart warming and heart breaking at the same time. I cry every time I hear this and the video destroys me. They knew each other from teenagers in a little band and all had the same dream and drive and achieved their goal. Lifelong brothers , two pass away and it makes me hurt to know the pain Paul and Ringo feel, every day for the loss. Paul has said that the last phone call he had with John, John said “Think of me now and then, my friend.” There’s a 12 minute video and Peter Jackson explains how the song was made. By the way, the opening note on this song was the very first time that guitar feedback was used on a song. Yes, song & video grow on you. You hear & see more details with every subsequent listening. Like you, I noticed the understatement style in everything. Softened the whole experience to make it more sublime. I wonder if that's part of the understated British personality trait we Yanks often hear about.

When I first heard this, all I could think was "what a fucking time to be alive". Modern technology was able to isolate John's vocals and 40 or so years after his death, place it perfectly into the final Beatles song to ever be written for the people of planet Earth to enjoy.

It's a demo song from John's solo career he wrote in the late 70s well after the Beatles had broken up.Just because the other 3 perform on it doesn't make it a Beatles song in my view. A high court decision in early 1971 meant none of members could use the name Beatles during their solo careers unless the 4 regrouped which they never did.
You know why is a mixed of feelings ? Because you need the beatles you missed you need peace and good music ...4 old man show to the world how it make a good music! In times of violence and bad music
