I feel like this video is an unfinished product, you did all that but didn't show us how to make a finish product. once I fill in the content how do I fine tune the edge of the subject to make the person blend with the background.
Thanks for this! I now have the "Select herrrrrrr, selectthefabric!" jingle in my head. :-) Easy to follow, hoping when I actually try this that it will work as smoothly as you showed it!
Great tutorial! I'm lost after you've inverted and you're trying to select using the rectangle tool, I can select easy enough but when I hit delete (MacBook backspace keyboard button), it deletes the mask from my subject in the middle so I'm left with the background I wanted to get rid of and I've lost some of my initial mask, in your example it would now be showing the model's legs which you previously cut out. Sorry I'm learning - thanks again!
Are you looking at the 7:00 mark? Let me know if this is where you see me doing this. If so, I'm actually hitting option-delete but the trick depends on what are you current foreground & background swatches. Option-delete fills the selection with your foreground color (at this moment, I had black so it fills the selection black). If you hit command-delete, you fill the selection with your background swatch. If these delete combos don't make sense, you can also just fill the rectangles with black. Does this help?
I would love to know how you did the invert of the background after the quick selection. I assume since the mouse did not move that you used a keystroke but can find zero help on how to complete that
Was this when I inverted at 3:06? If so, then here's what I did. First, make sure you have the layer mask icon in that layer selected (when you do, it has a white border/frame). Then I simply hit "command/control i" to invert the mask. You can also find it in the menu as Image/Adjustment/Invert. Does that help?
thank you very much for the video!! it really helped me a lot! I have one question: I'd like to add more background, so making the image bigger than it actually is. how would I do that with the content aware filling?
super handy! However i've run into a few challenges where the expanded selection of the model/foreground layer, does not blend in with the corrected background layer. I'm always left with this border outline that I either need to go back and mask out, or wand select to delete. Am I missing a step somewhere?
Thank you so much for this video! For some reason, when I follow your steps to select my subject and remove her from my background - she doesn't disappear! When I look at the layer thumbnails on the right, they look like yours... but on my main screen she's still there! What am I missing!? Thank you SO much for any advice you can give.
Besides the layer you are removing her from, are any other layers turned on? Could she be showing up on a lower layer? Let me know what the timestamp on this video to see what step you're at that's not looking correct, thanks!
How did you clean up the edge around the ballerina and scarf (expanded pixels) after all of the content aware fill? This is where I'm struggling most. Thanks!
Cleaning the remaining pixels was mostly done with the brush tool on the foreground layer mask; zooming in and carefully cleaning around the edges. I also use the refine mask window (which recently became the "Select and Mask" window under the Select menu. I discuss the refine mask window more in my video: "Photoshop Layer Masks with Scarlett Johansson."
What is the best background to make the best workflow of quick selection? Is better when is black, grey or white background? Actually I makes photo on white background ale quick selection works quite well but sometimes work not enough good, is much work to correct of selection by maks etc. Any tips what to do in studio or lighting setup or something else to make quick selection faster? ^_^
If I'm understanding correctly, I tend to do most of my mask work against white. Yet, working with keying software in After Effects, I'm used to working white on a black background, so I think it's more about using contrast to your advantage.
Great tips, thank you. Just a question on parts like her foot. Since the feathered 10px creates a reddish border around her foot, what would be the best way to clean that part up? Thanks.
Typically, I start with the Refine Edge Brush. You can find it by choosing "Select and Mask" from the select menu. Now, here's the trick. That version of the brush doesn't work as well as it used to. To get the super secret earlier version of the refine mask brush, hold down the "SHIFT" key when you choose "Select and Mask" from the Select Menu. This brush helps for most of it, but after, you'll still have to use your brush tool on the mask layer for the last bits of touch up. Does this all make sense?
really appreciate your time to reply! thank you...it makes sense. wow. these secret tips are real gems! know any more, heheh? i will try your technique, helps so much. have a good sunday!
Is the layer you are selecting locked? In my example, this would be my bottom "background" layer showing a locked icon. If you click on that icon, it should unlock and the layer will now allow you to fill. Keep in mind, however, you shouldn't be working on that layer so you always have an original layer should something go wrong.
If you hold down the shift key after your initial selection, you should be able to make as many selections as you want. Let me know if that doesn't work.
been trying to remove shadow and a break in the wall. Following your instructions step by step and the fill, content aware makes no difference does nothing.
@@Moovieboy the latest version and all updated. I am a press photographer and I use lightroom more than photoshop. I am quite ignorant when it comes to the ins and outs of photoshop. Thank you for the reply and great video
Would this be around 3:08? To clarify, after I duplicated the foreground, I went to the Image menu/adjustments/Invert. This creates the background layer I want to clean up while still keeping our dancer cleanly cut out on the foreground layer. Does this help?
If you ever use a mask in Photoshop you can always paint in black with a brush to remove specific parts of the mask and white to reveal and bring back parts of that mask. (Be aware of the hardness of the brush) To completely remove the layer mask you can simply right-click it and delete the mask if you don't want it at all.
For some reason, this comment was "held for review"? But to answer your question about the edges, those are addressed in my older video, "Photoshop Layer Masks with Scarlett Johansson." Essentially, it's done using the refine mask window. If you still have questions, let me know.
I don't like what u did here...I was trying my best following and then I got lost at the poimt where selected every oda thing to fill after cutting the background...I don't know how to do that...you are not a good teacher...not everyone is a pro in photoshop...u just made me waste my time and ur screen ain't full.
For anyone confused to invert the layer mask, its ctrl + I on windows and command + I
Thank you!
Trying to delete some annoying crap on a photo for a few days with different techniques. Finally this one made it through. Thanks a lot.
Great video! Perfect for what I needed. Thank you so much!!!
You’re very welcome. Hope it still mostly applies with the later versions!

How are you selecting multiple areas at once with the marquee tool?
Just hold down the shift key to add to your current selection and hold down the alt/option key if you want to subtract an area.

Hi, after you inverted the layer, i was lost on what tool you used to select the background spaces you wanted to replace...
That would be the rectangular marquee tool (keyboard shortcut M) for the large sections. If I need to be more precise, I use the lasso tool too.
How do you select more than one part from the background after you inverted the photo
I used the rectangular marquee tool but I can only make one selection not multiple
