I am in Troudale Oregon and have owned my 1989 four winn with 120 VRO Johnson outboard since new and never winterize as like this video. I always park my boat in my driveway. After each year of use around the end of November, I just lower the outboard down all the way and put a boat cover on the boat. Every spring around mid March, I change the spark plugs and lower unit oil. I always fill it with non-ethanon gas. It still runs great and always starts at the first start of each season. My only major repair is replace its starter last year and I did it myself with $75 for parts.
Very informative and well delivered how to video on winterizing your two stroke Johnson. This will help me as I just picked up an 18.5 wahoo! Sport fish with a Johnson 140 V4 that still need winterizing. Thanks again!
Great video, two tips though, first always fill the lower unit from the bottom. IMPORTANT! And second, try making a video WITHOUT the annoying music. People watch your videos for instruction, not to dance and party. Thanks for your time!
here's a couple of tips: firstly when spraying in the fogging oil you should put the motor in gear and turn it from the prop to spread the oil around the cylinder. secondly when filling the lower unit with oil you should pump it from the bottom and pump untill the oil overflows from the top hole, this way you know when it is full. :)
@@aspenrebel NO! when you fill from top with plug in bottom you are pressurizing the gearcase and is a pain to fill! from the bottom then put top plug in and this creates a vacuum of sorts so lube wont pour out bottom when putting that plug in!
Never fill lower unit oil from the top hole, it will trap air and lead to huge problems. Also, start it in the spring with your old plugs, burn off all the storage oil, THEN change out to new plugs. Appreciate you making videos.
For lower unit gear oil, ALWAYS fill from the bottom and pump until it flows out of the top hole; that way you know there is no air in the oil chamber. ALWAYS!
Hey der don't cha know, you must love that song like I love hotdish in MN - damn its loud. As a new boater I'm searching for ways to winterize so I appreciate the video, but more so the comments which give solid advice. thanks guys
My tip is to change the gear oil conpletly. I did as you propose, and one spring I was in a hurry and forget to top up the gear oil with full damage of the gearhouse.
Awesome video , I have been doing it the same way you did for a few years never an issue, rather have it over winterized then under ! Awesome video , do more boat videos
This is a bad example of how to winterize an outboard. 1. Never use the boat's water pump to draw water or RV anti-freeze via suction. You will run that impeller dry and have to replace it shortly. It must either be forced feed, gravity fed, or come up to the water line of the boat in a tank or in a body of water. 2. Always fill lower unit lube from the bottom up. Trapped air pockets can cause lower unit fluid to be trapped/not flow and the gears can run dry, destroying them. 3. RV anti-freeze in an outboard is completely unnecessary and a waste of money. Outboards automatically drain all their water out of the engine when completely lowered to the full bottom position. Make sure the drain holes on the lower unit are clear and you'll be fine.
Not if you was to hold the antifeeze jug up high while a helper starts engine! we have to do some sterndrives this way on the docks but have to warm up engine to open stats first or did no good
@@aspenrebel I spray it through the carb while the engine is running. Spraying in the cylinder and then putting the spark plug back in seems like it would create a hydrolock or blow out your rings! But I'm no mechanic either.
What in the world did I just watch? dude in my 40 years as a outboard mechanic have I ever seen a froze outboard. have you ever wondered why northern fishermen use outboards. Gearcase i have seen froze and cracked because of seal out and oil area full of water. Didnt you see how the antifreeze you poured in thermostat holes went right out the bottom. You filled gear lube wrong and you ran the impeller dry trying to antifreeze it.
I was wondering about that last thing, putting antifreeze in. That didn't sound good to me, running motor without water.. But I may be screwed with my 90 hp outboard. We just suddenly got hit with Winter on October 30th. 32F, maybe colder last and Tonite and Sat nite. Might be back up to 50F on Sunday. I didn't get to winterizing motor. It in a garage
@@crazialbanian25 Yes they will tell you that as its easy revanue for them. Believe me today alone I did 9 winterizes on sterndrives seadoos etc. outboard motors are self draining! why do you think Alaska fisherman use only outboards?
If you remove your thermostat cover pour some antifreeze in the hole and watch it immediately run out onto the ground! read any brand yamaha evinrude honda force suzuki service or owners manual and not one word about antifreeze!
To many mistakes in the video of how to do this, I hope new novices boaters will watch a few more videos. The lube was filled backwards, the fuel stabilization was not run thru the system, the fogged should be used with engine running, and use old plugs to burn off old oil in the spring. Oh, and kill that loud ass music for us boomers
Boy your four years older now I hope you've learned something since then. no need to drain gear lube out. just pull bottom and make sure no water comes out do this before running it water will be on bottom. so you pour antifreeze in the thermostat hole and it immediately run out the bottom. what does this tell you! also are you sure you are even running stats? bad if not! should be one on each side under that Evinrude intruder or Johnson fast strike engine cant tell with the hood paint job youve done. they are like Chevy n GMC same but different cosmetically. I fog my customers engines but never really understood why? do you fog your car if it sits 3 months? what about lawnmower chainsaw motorcycle! Besides you didnt even fog the crank and bearings just the cylinders. I run my fogging oil thru carb and choke down with it.
So putting antifreeze in the plug holes doesn’t rust up the interior like water does? Also.,., should be trying to catch as much of the antifreeze as possible. That stuff isn’t exactly environmentally friendly hahaha
why on earth did you start that motor up with no fluid getting to water pump ? you would of been better off putting the lower unit in a tub fill it with water and anti freeze mix then run the motor, at the same time do the fogging oil.. i got to this nad just cant watch any more..
Yeah I was thinking that, not good running motor without water intake, to get anti freeze in. I remember as a kid, we had a 115 hp outboard. Usually ran it in a barrel of water. One time we ran it dry for a few seconds. Then later when we put boat in water and try to go, something wrong with prop, it kept slipping. We took prop off, and black rubber bushings inside prop shaft we're all GOOO!!! So shaft spinning but prop wasn't.

Why wait till spring. Pull your lower unit now. Work on over the winter and be ready to install in spring!

Tape a note on your engine. Should put in new lower gear oil first thing in Spring anyways.
you don't fill oil from the top

why do you only fill the fuel tank half way ? full tanks helps to stop condensation
What happened to fogging the engine while it's running? That's how I winterize my twin 175s.
That's the common way.
How do you take plugs out if motor running? How does motor run without plugs, even one?
Yea and the engine hes working on has a Schroeder valve that a omc fog can attaches too

Non toxic antifreeze is best your gonna get and it's used all the time just not like this

every thing except how to change thermostat on a 1977/85 hp Evinrude.
How NOT to winterize an OUTBOARD🤣
Also if u got compression readings in the 90s that outboards smokedddd and beyond tired needs a rebuild, should be around 120-130
No one should ever do any of this
He does not know what he is doing.
