  • Andreia Perestrelo and Marcio Gomes had a terrifying escape from their flat on the 21st floor of Grenfell Tower the night of the fire. Almost one year later and they have been sent boxes of their belongings that survived. It has taken them almost six weeks to work up the courage to open the larger boxes. Newsnight's Katie Razzall and Sara Moraliogliu were with them.

      We smelled the WTC for months in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I ended up throwing out curtains, a rug, throw blankets and pillows from the sitting room. I also threw out the clothes I was wearing that day. I was working two blocks up from City Hall and left on foot after the second plane hit, so most of the really bad dust missed me. It's a smell I'll take with me until I die.

    When they unwrapped the dogs bowl I just started crying. I'm so attached to my little guy I probably would have gone back to get him. This fire still gets me and I live know where near london but it just proves how humanity just gets worst and worst through the years. Animals take better care of there kind than some humans take care of other human beings.
    Why even bother making something so flammable unless it is for a fire. If these companies won't feel safe putting these materials on there own buildings why bother selling it. What I don't understand know one has gone to prison over this fire. And what is really unbelievable, there are many buildings in Europe with this cladding on them still to this day. Humans are the worst creatures on earth!!!

  • @spex357
    @spex357 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Each flat is designed to be a fire-resisting box, Sad times due to people ignoring a simple Planning rule for money, "nothing that holds a flame" and that used to apply to all materials in the window opening and on the facade. Hence original windows being metal with no plastics holding extractor fans in windows. If the material didn't hold a flame but retreated out of the fires reach such as with Polystyrene, then a fire stop would be fitted on each floor level, its depth determined from the expected flame height from below.
    Best scenario fit a total flame/ fire proof Insulation material like Glasswool.
    Some years ago Rockwool had an advert claiming their material doesn't burn, the petrol based Insulation lobby took them to court and nearly bankrupted them, big oil at play.
    In 2009-2010, of over 8,000 fires in these type of blocks, only 22 fires necessitated evacuation of more than five people with the assistance of the fire and rescue service.
    If all the rules are followed, the use of the common parts, and the nature of any combustible items present, is such that any fire originating in the common parts is unlikely to spread beyond the immediate vicinity.
    When Mrs Thatcher said we must peel back the state, this is what I envisaged, letting business audit itself when we know how rapidly it can be corrupted, like it was when these blocks where constructed, was always on my mind. Some blocks where demolished shortly after they where built as they had been shoddily built, but no one went to jail.
    Meanwhile those responsible are delaying, and have no intention of attending the Inquiry.

      Archived building blueprints would distinguish which apartment was where, records would validate which family lived in which flat. Careful excavation of surviving items in each residence would have been recorded and mark to be cleaned and returned to it's owners. It's pretty simple logic.

    • @ninamesseck3079
      @ninamesseck3079 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mugs are often a gift. I myself received few, I gave few too to others. Mugs like "best mum ever", or the one we still have from childhood, from a travel, mugs are often a memory, they will not use them to drink from them but its high chance that it was important for someone, so they received it back.

      @@tomlibooe That is totally heart breaking. Unfortunately, while marriages can withstand many things, something this deeply traumatic requires very deep changes within individuals which are far deeper than the roots of the current relationship - far deeper than merely 'outgrowing' each other over time. I hope they both found healing in their new lives, my heart is aching actually as I write this. I used to be active in the facebook groups but when covid hit I was angry that they allowed the companies to give testimony over the internet in the safety of their own homes - making it easier to lie and cheat, so I stopped watching and talking. However, of course I understand why the BSR's accepted the situation - they needed to move on. I wasnt part of the community, I joined the conversations for professional and empathic reasons. x

    It is remarkable that these possessions were retrieved and cleaned by the authorities; I can't think of many places in the world where poor victims would be so treated. The power of international capital is so overpowering in London, even when sympathetic people are elected to supposedly powerful positions of authority. The tide of plutocrification is so overhelming for ordinary people, sweeping them out of their city with deadly force. Tragically, the force supposedly opposed to this, namely Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party, also seems to be in thrall to the Russians, who have brought so much of that capital into London.
