I rolled my 2003 XC90 off a freeway in California back in 2015. I was going ~70 mph (~113 kph). I walked away from the accident with nothing but a bruised knee and a minor cut in my hand. I'm sure I get fairly lucky, but the car sure as hell helped a lot. Even after flipping end over there was only 1 spot where the frame bent.
in 2013 it was the day before my birthday and I was in a Ford truck with my grandpa and we were on the highway doing 50 in pouring rain and someone clipped tor back left taillight and my grandpa lost control of the truck. it rolled over but the scary part was when my grandpa wasn't in the truck. he was ejected out the window and broke almost all his ribs, broke his c2 vertebrae in his neck, brushed his heart, had a concussion, broke his right shoulder blade, and lots of other things I don't remember. since then he has had a heart attack, 2 strokes and he had an infected rib plate which just healed. he was in the ice for 3 months and he was in the progressive care unit for 1.5 months. once he was home he apoligized for missing my birthday. I had I cut on my wrist and I cut on my leg. that was it because I had my seat belt buckled. long story short WEAR A SEATBELT!!!!!! now I am 10 and to this day I hate being in the car in the rain
This proves, once again, that Volvo is truly the safety leader. I have heard other car companies claim they "set the standard" for safety, but in reality, Volvo has set the standard.
At the end, he points out that half of all automotive fatalities in the USA are road departure accidents. As you can see, Volvo is leading research and development in this area, way ahead of other car companies and crash test agencies.
Teslas are the safest cars by far. 9 times better in the pole test. 50% less roll over rate. A lot of the weight is in the batteries, giving it a really low center of gravity.

I wonder what would have happened if I'd been in one of these when I crashed my truck. I went through a deeper ditch, but I missed the culvert when I launched over the field entrance. Given that I was in a truck and had no weight in the back, I ended up slamming nose down for the first impact before continuing over. I bet this wouldn't have gone onto the roof like my Toyota did. At the very least, I'd hope the windshield wouldn't have gone flying away with my dash cam.

such a thing does not exist in europe, they however do a 60? mph frontal crash with another car/block of concrete, and yes you will survive, THAT is their golden standard.
I applaud their trying to be the safest car/svu out there. I just ordered a XC 90 T8 inscription last week with a 2 month wait. The problem with crashes is the sudden stop that your organs/ neck can't sustain causing death from internal bleeding and neck fractures. No amount of safety can eliminate this, for now.
but what would have happened if the car would have ACTUALLY hit that pipe in that ditch? Cos in that test, you can see it at the end of the video @ 6:14, the tires did not hit the pipe. The pipe went under the car and then the car just left the ground nose up from the ditch without hitting the pipe
I did the exact same thing in my 95 Silverado at about 30 miles an hour with culvert twice as tall. It bottomed out all 4 tires and landed in the ditch on the other side of the culvert 40 feet from where it took off. I put it in 4wd and drove out of the ditch and home. After an alignment, it ran and drove just as good as normal. Looks kind of crappy now, though.
Actually the XC90 is not as safe as you’d think. A few examples: (a) there are so many safety things beeping at you it’s quite a distraction; (b) the proximity warnings go off at weird times e.g. a bike passing 4ft away while you’re stationary in a traffic queue; (c) the distance-controlled cruise control deactivates when you use your indicator - so you accelerate into the car in front; (d) the auto-stop doesn’t work below 4mph - so the car will happily drives slowly into anything in front in, say, a traffic queue. Oh, and the automatic speed sign alert if wrong 35%of the time - I’ve lost count of the number of times I’d be driving down a dual carriageway at 70mph when the “30mph” alert screeches - because it had seen a side road speed sign. It goes on.
Funny thing is I never thought I’d own one but now I’m a happy owner a S60. It’s also very comfy unlike my C300 which I had too many problems with glad I got a Volvo

+MrGamegast That's why the cars gets a lot more damaged now days during a crash - to make the crash time longer. Volvo cars are also designed to deform in a way so the car slides sideways from the obstacle they hit.. so that the car keeps going instead of a full stop. With that said if you crash into a telephone pole the car might slide to the side of it and keep going before it stops, reducing the force by a tone compared to a car that fully stops at the pole. I saw a few crash test when cars were tested on crashing into a small overlap on IIHS Volvo were the only car that were still traveling forward after the collision. Search for "2016 Volvo XC90 small overlap IIHS crash test" on TH-cam to see what I mean.
+Tadas .. Best comment yet. For the Safety features of this car. This Car should have rolled over when it hit the ground. Simple Physics proves that. The fact that it did not roll over proves, they got it right.
+Tadas that only proves you are a moron. coming down from even 6 feet in the air can break your spine and kill you outright, let alone that height. Cars made for jumping have special pads and collapsible seat supports to protect the stunt drivers. You need to stop watching so much hollywood crap.
That crash was a lot tamer than I thought it was going to be. I was hoping for a proper roll. That crash took place over quite a distance meaning that the impact was spread out and not so dangerous.
+legioner9 : If somebody is into the extreme of things, this isn't a ditch but then, this isn't a high performance car and isn't running at speeds above 120mph. This clip doesn't show you what grand theft auto would look like, this clip shows what a normal roadway with a normal car would do in such a situation. This shows what could happen to you when you drive a car at 50mph on a normal road. That is what crashtests are for.
+donkeydicked : You think so? I think that that same Hyundai would roll over, crashing every pillar it has, inguring everyone in the car in such a way, only a dentist would know who is who. Not to mention if they ever could retreved from that car.
+donkeydicked the only thinkg that proves is you are an idiot who watches too many hollywood movies - that could very easily break your back and kill you, not to mention most cars would roll.
so why is it that some people say that reliability lacks and others say that theirs has lasted forever? Is it a certain year? Is it the area in which it is manufactured? I just want to understand why there are two sides to this. Try to be objective rather than subjective if you're going to answer.
The old Volvo's did last . The new ones have transmission and engine problems . The old Volvo 444 , 544 , 120 , 122s , 142 , Those Volvo's with engine like the B16 , B18 , B20 engines were basically half of a truck engines and lasted well . The Manual trans was over built also and with no more than 120 to 150 hp the torq will not hurt the drive-train in a million miles . The trans is built to take 300 hp . But sense Ford bought voting share of Volvo thing went down hill . Remember the Ford 500 back about 10 years ago . Guess what it is a Volvo . Ford bastardized Volvo and ran it in the ground . Volvo needs to go back and get the best engine they ever made ( The B-20 or the B-22 ) and throw Ford out the window . Same happened to Opal back 40 years ago . See what GM did to them . Man Made junk .
I don’t get how you can have a single car accident in the USA, of the 2 states I’ve visited all the roads are very wide, straight and the corners are shallow and well marked.
Havent seen anything here which other cars won't do - even a 2010 Lexus RX has dropped on its roof from a 4 storey parking garage and had no fatalities. Actually - I dont think anyone has ever been killed in a Lexus RX before in the US. TBH I dont think any SUV at this price point has any safety problems

I've never seen a culvert that was cut off on a 45° angle. They are always vertical and have stone or concrete walls around them.
that does not look like a serious crash at all..
+Tadas ..
Best comment yet. For the Safety features of this car.
This Car should have rolled over when it hit the ground. Simple Physics proves that. The fact that it did not roll over proves, they got it right.
If the official test does not require that speed. It will never happen. Would like though to see this text done with a 10/15 year old car.
+Tadas
This could still kill a person/s.
+Tadas Good, it means the car handled it well.
+Tadas that only proves you are a moron. coming down from even 6 feet in the air can break your spine and kill you outright, let alone that height. Cars made for jumping have special pads and collapsible seat supports to protect the stunt drivers. You need to stop watching so much hollywood crap.
Just the good ole boys, Never meanin' no harm.... :D
hey volvo if it possible to give me a car for free? and let me crash it when i bored it?
That crash was a lot tamer than I thought it was going to be. I was hoping for a proper roll. That crash took place over quite a distance meaning that the impact was spread out and not so dangerous.
Lol. That accident is still enough to give you upper spinal cord damage.
That wasn't even a slightly severe crash ... A $20k Hyundai would have done just the same
I seriously doubt that.
+legioner9 Just Because it wasn't a monster ditch that you'll never see does that make this a bad test? That is a pretty standard looking ditch to me.
5th Gear is like the Daily Mail of car shows.
so why is it that some people say that reliability lacks and others say that theirs has lasted forever?
Man Made junk .
why did the hazards turn on?
+walker h some newer cars have this feature where the hazards turn on automatically when there is an impact.
Because the car was in a hazardous situation
I don’t get how you can have a single car accident in the USA, of the 2 states I’ve visited all the roads are very wide, straight and the corners are shallow and well marked.
have they been wrapped at yiannimize?
I have been in that test center 4 years ago my dad works there
This why I love Volvo so much came us so safe
At this point Volvo should just use real humans for their crash tests.
2020 you say?
Traducirl los videos al español por favor
Volvo for life
The Volvo XC 90 is from 2017. And this video was published in 2015
So if bandits are escaping from the police and try to drive through a fence, the sensor in the car will actually make it stop. LOL
2:40 crash
Hi how's it going?# Wonderiul! invention list What's your opinion about tjis
Hahaa... i love how the Dummy is sitting on Volvo 240 seat 😂
