How to Identify Echinacea or Cone Flower; Echinacea purpurea - Wild Medicinal Plants

- How to identify Echinacea, or Cone Flower is rather easy, however there are several species of Echinacea. The one we look at today is called Echinacea purpurea. Easily distinguished by the orange spikes coming out of the center of its ray like flowers. The flowers are a purple color but can range from purple to white, and are not always in a cone shape like the name Cone Flower might suggest. Commonly found in plains and prairies this plant was widely used by Native Americans for its effects on colds, flu, rattlesnake bites, and many more uses have been attributed to this wonderful plant. The leaves are long and lance shaped with teeth and lobes running down the margins. The leaves and stems are covered in small bristle like hairs that make them feel like rough paper or sandpaper. The bristles will rub off when touched and there are no known look a likes in the United States to my knowledge. Echinacea is also commonly grown in flower gardens and lawns because of how beautiful they are but many many not know how to identify this plant, or they may not be aware of its uses.

Nice to see the lovely echinacea paradoxa resurgence in your area as well. What was once rare seems to have surpassed echinacea purpurea in nearly all of the prairies we have foraged this year. ;)

It is a beautiful plant for sure! I love to make tinctures from the root and when needed I'll mix it with Boneset and Goldenseal for a powerhouse to rid colds and flu at the first sign. Wow, those are just growing wild? I have only ever seen one plant in the wild and it was probably brought by a bird from someones garden, like mine :) Is that Grey-Headed Cone Flower is see in the background too? Beautiful!
Yeah, there's a huge field near my house that has a prairie restoration project going on. There's things from the two coneflower species you see, plus wild quinine, milkweed, rough blazing star, bee balm, mountain mint, and more. It is absolutely beautiful and filled with pollinators. Thanks for this identification video! Do you know if Echinacea Purpurea "Magnus" is medicinal? There are so many Purpurea varieties but the lady at the garden center said that Magnus is the original coneflower for medicine.
How do you prepare, or what do you do with the root to make these things?
Ive been looking for a few days and can't find anything definitive. Can all varieties be used for medicinal purposes? Green twister, I believe, is a direct hybrid and mutation. Is it safe to use? Thank you.

Yeah, TH-cam uses an algorithm to determine what notifications they show people. They say it depends upon how much content they watch by which creators but that doesn't seem to always be the case. Trying to grow some in my yard currently, but I hope it isn't too hot and sunny for them. Any advice for growing them is useful and appreciated!
They are pretty hardy plants and are adapted to hot sunny environments. The best advice I have is to keep them watered. Other than that they should grow pretty well. Thanks for asking O J!
