Nice work man...I'll be learning from your experience with the engine rebuild as well. Looking forward to it! There needs to be more channels like ours...DIY power boaters. Brother I love to watch a young person attempt and fix the issues as you find them. We all have the ability if you just try!!! In these case focus on what caused it. The push rod moves the rocker arm to open and closes the valves. So obviously something kept the valve from moving. Could be as simple as a stuck valve from lack of use. However I noticed what appeared to be rust/oxidation on the exhaust port. That concerns me. Remember water can not be compressed. That resistance could have caused the failure. Do some exploring/scope the cylinder before putting in the new stuff. FYI I'm no expert. I'm just a guy that has learned from trial and error. Stay positive and remember you can do it!!!

  • @mikeyadrick5154

    that part, not connected--is a "Push Rod", the valve lifter is the part on the cam lobe. Cam moves lifter, pushes on push rod, pushes on rocker , pushes on valve-----mikey

The stock BBF FORDS HP RATING ON A STOCK BLOCK IS 1000 HP . CHEVYS cannot go that far . Chevy cannot do that far lol . The 454 is the highest they have lol lol CHEVY SUCKS !!!

    Plenty of 454's in dead RV's.
    Personally, I don't see the attraction of these exhaust valve burning engines.
    IMHO, if you repower your boat, look to diesels. Many vessels running GM marine 6.5L Turbo engines. Fairly straightforward swap. You will need to swap props as well. You will see a reduction in fuel consumption. In addition, diesel fuel is much less likely to explode vs gasoline.

      Chris A / 👍🏼👍🏼 Absolutely! Expensive ordeal to repower

    • @tuck6464
      @tuck6464 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have never seen a GM 6.5 diesel in any boat. I've GM's Detroit diesel's, Cummins diesel's and various other manufacturers, but never a 6.5 TD.

    • @tuck6464
      @tuck6464 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not a fairly straightforward swap (this is nearly his first experience with gasoline engines and quite likely never touched a diesel )( Diesels are only easier than gasoline engines IF and ONLY IF you learned to work on diesels first/before you learned gas.)
      He'll need to change trans gear ratios, bigger prop shafts, and props fuel systems. at that point you might as well swap out the gasoline generator.
      By comparison to rebuilding the 454's, (which they don't necessarily need) that an insanely expensive, majorly labor intensive proposition. Just gathering the parts, if you not fluent in diesel, would be a nightmare.

  • @jascan1489
    @jascan1489 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Man that rust in the exhaust port is a sign of a bad or cracked exhaust manifold.
    Check to see of that valve is seized up and what caused the push rod to puncture through the rocker arm.
    You can take a socket the size of the spring retainer and take it with a hammer and see if the valve is free.
    Even though the cylinder wasnt firing, still no reason for the rust in that port.
    I've been a boat mechanic for 25yrs, if you have any questions let me know.

  • @KMLTimesTwo
    @KMLTimesTwo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I am a little behind in the series....but I would also look at the "other side" of that rocker equation. Not sure what would cause that, but I would look into stuck valve...and/or piston to valve interference. I would recommend new exhaust gaskets (and manifold) while you are in it.

    Pull off the valve cover see is the rocker arm to the valve broken our come out of adjustment sometimes that will be why the push fraud looks like it's other place the engine was not misfiring when it started So either your push rod or rocker arm is that adjustment and all the lifter itself is broken or the oil hole to build all pressure inside is blocked the worst case scenario is that a low on the cam is worn off but I don't think that's the case cause the engine was not miss frying when you started it

  • @scottsmith5398
    @scottsmith5398 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For a push rod to push through a rocker arm is very abnormal as you know. This happened for a reason. The reason it happened is because the valve is stuck and would not move. Why is the valve stuck? You also had rust in the exhaust port of the exhaust manifold. This means you have water in the exhaust port which means you could also have water in the cylinder. If you have enough water in the cylinder then you will have hydro-lock. This means with enough water in the cylinder there is not enough room for the valve to open. I would be looking very closely at the rust in the exhaust port and water intrusion into the cylinder. The water would most likely be coming from rust through in the water jacket of the exhaust manifold.

  • @sail4horizon
    @sail4horizon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Way to dig into that project 👍🏻 Take a hammer and hit the top of the valve stem to make sure the valve isn't seized. If it is when you crank it again you'll break parts. You'll need to find a manual or video to show you how to set the valve lash.

    easier said that done...but down the road...or down the ocean.....you may want to consider doing complete engine rebuilds...by that I mean pull them out and strip them down re build...that is really the only way to get many years out of them....it will be costly and a big job...but it will be worth in the long run...maybe do one engine, safe more money then do the other engine....OR..replace them with diesels...but that is REALLY BIG $!!

    There is always a reason for a failure. The pushrods may be lubed by the lifters. If they are not mushroom lifters than they can be pulled out the top. All these things add up. But now is the time to drop in a fresh set. After engine is fired and valves are adjusted, run with covers off and visually inspect that all valves are opening and closing. Its worth the piece of mind to know the top end is full oiling. If not, a cam or crank bearing may have spun.

    Just thought of another possibility. What if the lifter is stuck in the fully extended position? This could possibly try to push the valve beyond it's limit of travel and result in the push rod pushing through the rocker arm. I would remove the lifter and check it.

  • @djlyon117
    @djlyon117 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That’s a great find. It could have turned out a lot worse than that. We’ve been looking at commanders and a wood constructed constellation recently.
    Just my two cents, but you might think about making a visit to Harbor Freight tools. For the diy person on a budget a lot of their hand tools are pretty decent. I don’t know how they’d work out in a professional situation being used constantly but for the person that uses them here and there they work good. Might invest in a pry bar. You’ll have more control with it. I’m not sure how the power tools hold up. I’ve heard good and bad about them. I’ve got one of the higher end angle grinders they sell. It seems to work pretty well.
    Keep up the good work.

    A good tip to keep crap from entering your engine while taking apart or putting back together is use a vacuum to suck up all the dirt and little chunks of gunk that comes off things. It will save you an engine. Use that vacuum in every stage of teardown & rebuilding. Oh my, what a dirty carb and intake. I see lots of lack of maint. P.S. I've seen this before in my BBC engines. Cause= collapsed lifter and or rounded off cam lobe. If it's a rounded off cam lobe, tear engine down and look for metal shavings. Happened to me (3) times. 396 427 and the 454. That's when I went MOPAR. Chances are, that rocker arm is laying under that valve cover not attached. That engine needs to be pulled out.

    Finding that small pc still up in the head was so lucky If that got down into the engine you might be buying a new engine

      Gerry Dunne not necessarily buying a new engine, complete rebuild would have to be done

    This dude turned a 15 minute job into a 3-4 hour cluster fark. I would have removed the valve cover first, not sure why he separated the carb and now has to drop the dist. shaft back in. RMEz.

      Its fun. Sure i could speed run it and get it over with... But I enjoy taking my time. The intake manifold needed to be removed anyway. Oil leak out of the old gaskets. Got some new ones waiting in the wings.

    All that metal from when you ground the camel down and dish the back of the lifter is floating around in there taking up making up more clearances on the connecting rods and main bearings and pretty soon it's going to come to the side of the block cuz you never took it out to clean it and fix it right you're just a patch kind of guy instead of fixing it the right way
