Let's take a look around the engine room of my 1978 Chris Craft Corinthian! The centerpiece is the twin 454 marine engines, but there's so much more to explore.
That is why I have given up on buying a boat like yours. I am in my early 70's and I realized I can't crawl around in spaces like that anymore. So I live out my boating dreams vicariously through your videos. Keep up the good work.
I'm sorry for "liking" your post without following up. There are absolutely boats out there that are easier to maintain than mine. This is a near nightmare scenario, honestly, in terms of layout and accessibility. And ideally a well maintained boat wouldn't need owner access at all. Do NOT give up on the dream
A simple shim, even a washer on the outside of the two bolts will align the starter properly and stop or reduce the grinding. if one doesn't work use two
The 501cu in Cadillac engine still holds the record for the largest production engine, but I've never seen a marinized one. The only thing I'm not too fond of is that ChrisCraft used the "peanut port" truck engines, which aren't necessarily the best performing engines, but they work for what you're doing with em. I'd have probably went with the rectangle port heads. I know you've been keeping after them, and the way you keep up with them, they should last you forever 😊 glad to see more videos coming out, we all miss you when we don't see you for a while
@@CullenCraft yeah, and sometimes they get deeper stroke crankshafts and all that jazz, but you're trying to move a cabin cruiser, not a speedboat, and the way you're always on top of em, yours are just fine the way they are. Can't wait for your next video!!!
Always love your videos! The journey as a new(er) boat owner is persistently educational... I've also had to learn about electrical systems as previous owner(s) had installed unsafe equipment in the boat. One example: a non-ignition-protected fuse block in the engine room. We had to install a new Vacuflush system, replaced oil filter adapters because prior owner had stripped the threads by installing a filter of the wrong thread size, replaced the rotten sole in the mid-cabin, added GFCI-protected receptacles (removed a 120V AC extension cord that ran from the SHOWER area to the TV set), learned to clean the seawater strainers, replaced all the batteries, installed a new marine water heater, replaced a transmission cable, bilge blowers, 4 stainless steel propellers, a new battery charger, installed a grey water tank monitor so we didn't have to climb into the engine room to determine if a pump-out was needed... I'll stop there as I think you get the idea... Great Job! Keep 'em coming... Cheers, Capt. John
As far as your generator issue watch episode 188 of this old boat. I recommend subscribing he has videos of working on just about everything on a boat.
I feel your pain with working on an older boat I bought an 88 lures 40 footer with twin 454 crusader engines rebuilding the starboard as we speak little tougher for me to get around at 6 foot five 300.
I have an 86 CC 381. This spring I am installing 8 LED strip lights I got off Amazon for like $36. Also I had the same run time on our Onan 6.5k after it ran fine on the sea trial. Ended up being the water impeller, even though it was replaced 2 years before. Way easier to change than the 454’s. I hope you looked into that before removing the generator. I think you can also override the temp sensor if you know the impeller is good and open up both drain plugs on the bottom of the cylinder heads to make sure they are clear.
Generators have windings in them which make them a lot heavier than they look. I recommend trying to figure out the problem where it sits. If you think it's overheating and shutting itself off To protect itself If it's water cooled you might have a thermostat stuck in the closed position Causing it to overheat. It's a cheap part and if that wasn't the problem it was probably time to replace it anyways. If it has its own water pump that could be bad Or the temperature sensor that tells it it's overheating and shuts itself off could be bad falsely telling it it's overheating But the fact that it runs a little bit then shuts itself off tells me it's doing its job.
Excellent advice! After we stopped the camera we realized just how heavy the genset is. Also tracked down a few problems. I need to do more research but we have a solid idea how to fix it.
Also, very simply, often times the sea water intake strainer can get clogged with seaweed, plastic bag, other crap floating by, and prevent water flow to engine and overheat, causing auto shutdown. Same for main engines except they have no auto overheat protection. Check your strainers! Additionally, "marinized" engines have freeze plugs replaced with brass ones. Steel rusts through in salt or even fresh water.
I have a generator issue on my 33’ Corinthian. Generator would start and run great for a period…then stop. Now, it runs as long as I hold the start button down. Dies when I let go. It’s a 12.5 kw genset. My mechanic is going to tackle it in the Spring. I assume it’s some sort of safety switch or something.
Good luck with the repair on the genset, I have to fix my Onan 6500 too. Out of curiosity, where did you find that couch? It looks the perfect size for the salon in my Concorde 41.
These couches are everywhere! They're mass produced in a factory and rebranded by different companies. I got mine from Amazon, it's cheap, good quality, folds out into a bed, and ships in the mail. Look up something like "reversible sleeper couch" and it will come up
nice video, thanks. do u have a watermaker? they are a lot of maintenance but can allow you to carry less water. No issue if you have big tanks. how long can you do with a full tank of water? thanks
Hey, not bashing, educating ... Air cleaners ... they are flame arrestors! Your cooling isn't closed cooling, if you cant show me a cooling reservoir, which i don't think you can, than you have regular lake water cooling exactly like a car with its water jackets
Hello! Yes there is a coolant reservoir which I tried to point out in the video but was dark before I brought out the light Also I made a point to say "flame arrestor" in earlier videos but I forgot in this one

U inspired me to work on my 1990 carver that’s has been sitting for 6 years now going to need ur help
Can't wait on the generator repair video. I second the motion to install cheap LED lights down there.

Yes! I've seen a couple of bored-out 454s used on speedboats, but never as a factory option.
@@CullenCraft I had a 41' Commander that had 454s
Yes, I meant that people have bored out factory 454s to make custom larger displacement engines.

You've done a ton on your boat, John! I still have your video footage on my computer - I'll get around to editing soon.

Hello from Canada , just luv your boat. It is looking great with what you have done with it.😎🇨🇦
Nice to see your back doing boat jobs , I’ve got loads to do next week before the summer starts 👍

I have 2 x 454 Crudaer 350HP engines plus gearboxes, and a 12Kva Westerbeke Gas Generator if you want them?
Hey hey you need to install some led lights down there!
I need to do an entire engine room refresh eventually, but it's so much work in a small dirty place 😓

Possibly a fuel flow problem too. The mechanic will know more than I do. Good luck!
