@@keveardoDamn right. I actually appreciate the fact that we had to watch week to week and wait for the completion of the series. Made you feel more wrapped up in the story and invested in the characters than binging all 5 seasons in a single weekend.
when i was watching the final few episodes for the first time on streaming, i kept pausing certain moments all the time to make the experience last longer, giving myself little cliffhangers
First off, spoiler alert! And second, sorry, but for me, this analogy doesn't work. A monkey can't stop being a monkey. But that was *not* true about "Slippin' Jimmy" (despite what Chuck says later on about Jimmy being "unable to change"). The ironically sad truth is that whole reason Jimmy wanted to get a law degree in the first place was because he did *not* want to be "Slippin' Jimmy" anymore. He wanted to be more like *Chuck.* Forget being proud of Jimmy - Chuck should've been proud of *himself!* He should've taken Jimmy wanting to be a lawyer as a sign that he had "won" the "who is the better brother" award (which, to be fair, he *never* should've been playing in the first place - but setting that aside) - because even *Jimmy* was now *proudly* admitting to it! Jimmy *literally* was trying to say to Chuck, "I want to be more like *you,* not like 'myself,'" by getting that law degree. That's why Jimmy adored his brother so much at the beginning of the show and worked so hard (even by Howard's admission. "You've been doing *all* this *every* day?") to get him healthy again. He loved his brother so much because his brother (in addition to saving him from prison) motivated him to *stop* being "Slippin' Jimmy." And *that* is why - once it finally occurred to him that it was *his brother,* and *not* Howard, who had forever denied him a lawyer position at HHM - he was so angry that he said to Chuck "you're on your own" regarding his condition. But yes, the sad truth is that Chuck was actually *wrong,* and that *Chuck* was the reason "Slippin' Jimmy with a law degree" happened. If Chuck hadn't been so determined to hurt his brother (literally so much so he ended up making himself *sick* - yes, we find out later that his entire "allergy to electromagnetism" was all in his head and that it was all a manifestation of how bothered he was by Jimmy getting a law degree), he not only would've still been alive by the show's end, but it would *never* have been "Slippin' Jimmy with a law degree" and *instead* would have been simply "Jimmy proudly following Chuck's footsteps." Jimmy had actually *stopped* being "Slippin' Jimmy" for several years (while working for HHM in the mail room) at that point. Chuck was the *entire* reason Jimmy reverted back to being "Slippin' Jimmy" after getting his law degree.
3:13 kim's facial expressions tell such a great story. she admires and respects chuck, but seeing how he dismisses jimmy who's trying to connect with him is very offputting. rhea seehorn did such a kickass job!!!!
Oh wow I never noticed that before, it says a lot about her character that she can immediately recognize faults in someone she really looks up to whereas most people would likely subconsciously dismiss it if someone they aspired to be like said something small and offputting like this and probably forget about it altogether
These types of details are exactly why I try not to do anything else while watching a movie or show I actually care about. You can easily miss stuff that tells you a lot about the characters and their stories if you don't pay full attention
Goes to show too that it wasn’t just chuck who inspired him to get into the Law, Kim’s enthusiasm and dedication to working and studying definitely gave Jimmy the motivation he needed to go for it.
It was the prospect of being admired by Kim the way she admired his brother, more than her enthusiasm. He needed a way to impress her and was willing to go to great lengths to do it.
Jimmy literally spews out bullshit, he is clearly not in the topic and speaks for the sake of speaking. What was Chuck supposed to do? Pat him on the head?
"When you straightened up and got a job in the mail room, I was very proud." -Chuck in S1 E9 Well, in 3:10 we see what this pride really is about; to be able to look down on Jimmy and feel superiority.
That’s it! He never wanted Jimmy on the same level as him no matter what, always looking down on him because in Chuck’s eyes, that’s all Jimmy will be at.
Chuck was jealous that despite his success; Jimmy always seemed to charm people in a way that he couldn’t (including their own mother). Jimmy becoming a small-time grifter that needed to be bailed out of trouble was Chuck’s way of assuring himself that he was “right” about his brother the whole time; and Jimmy was always “wrong”. You’re absolutely right about Chuck subconsciously taking satisfaction in feeling superior…because deep-down he was insecure; and the law gave him the only validation he ever knew.
@@MisterSmith00 Absolutely. Jimmy, with his charm and social wit, could easily make people like him. Chuck, without these social gifts, had to work hard to get to places. And even then what he mostly wins is others' respect but not heart. Deep down Chuck knew this, and thus the resentment towards his brother. I also think Chuck's phrase "the law is sacred" has a lot to do with this resentment - a law degree holds prestige, class and respect, something that Jimmy's shortcuts could and should never get him to. It's a status only for the decent, hard-working people like Chuck. Jimmy unexpectedly passing the bar and reaching this prestigious, "sacred" status blows a major crack in Chuck's world view and self esteem. It's also the starting point of his mental problems.
@@OuQu Chuck has admirers but not friends. Except perhaps Howard and he pushed away even him. His last accusation towards Jimmy (in the end you will heart everyone around you) was as much as confession as an accurate prediction.
Jimmy saw how Kim admired Chuck for using his law skills to win a hard case and how he was impressed by her law knowledge. When Jimmy finally became a successful lawyer Chuck resented him for that and he bonded with Kim by essentially committing crimes.
I almost forgot how similar Jimmy's path is to Walt's. It's like a midlife crisis spirals out into this quest for power and self-worth. It's time for a rewatch.
I'll be honest I never realized how far back these flashbacks takes place. Honestly is kind of funny how once again Chuck being a bad brother leads to everything. Kim is important to Jimmy becoming a lawyer, but I honestly wonder if Chuck responds better to this joke he doesn't try to become a lawyer.
Chuck could easily answer jokingly something like "Well, technically, Isaacson is our client, but thanks Jimmy for your enthusiasm." and just laugh about it and that's it everyone have a great day. It doesn't require much effort and isn't very different from what he said but the tone would be totally different.
@@A12C4 yes, if Chuck might have said something that made Jimmy feel welcomed, instead of something making him feel small. "Isaccson's on our side, but I'll kick his butt too" and they both are warmed.
Jimmy and Walt are interesting to compare/contrast. Walt is deeply book smart while Jimmy clearly struggles academically. Both of them ended up cultivating a larger-than-life persona but it seems like Jimmy has a lot more empathy for the "working man" while Walt holds immense spite towards "low class" people. Saul Goodman ended up embracing the fact that "real" lawyers would always look down on him while Walt clung to the idea of an unassailable, "A man provides."
Walt was deeply book smart and Jimmy was deeply money smart which made him more intelligent and resulted in jimmy being titled "mr. Rock festival" because he gets "hella bands".
Jimmy is also smart. What is there to imply he struggles academically? Honestly I think Jimmy is just as smart as Chuck. The only things I can think of to suggest otherwise are, 1. Chuck acts like Jimmy isn't that smart and is surprised he was able to pass the bar - I think that one is probably says more about Chuck than anyone else. 2. He got his law degree from a sketchy correspondence school - He was working full time in the HHM mail room when he got it, so it had to be a correspondence school. And it being a fictional school, we don't actually know much about its reputation, especially compared to other correspondence schools 3. In the beginning of BCS he wasn't very successful - He was just starting out his practice and didn't really have his footing yet. In the end he ended up being a very successful lawyer.
