I’m in my 40’s but at 25 I got off birth control without the knowledge of all these excellent reads I just knew it didn’t feel right for me. It was the best thing I could’ve ever done for my mental & my body. Tracking my cycle and being selective with men in my life have warded off unplanned pregnancy as well.

I’m in my 30’s and I’m glad I’ve never been on birth control but I did have to deal with bad acne all my 20’s but thankfully it’s gotten better. Honestly being on bc scares me 😳 I’ve been following your journey since you got off it and I’m so glad you’re doing well 😊

when i got off my hormonal birth control (pill) in 2020/2021, it took a good while for my hormones to regulate back to normal. my skin and my mood swings were crazy and acting up. the main thing i suffered with was hormonal acne breakouts all the time for a year and a half straight. i am glad i went off it overall and my libido came back as well. the only thing i miss from taking bc is not having debilitating menstrual pain.

the first 3-6 years of a girls period will be unregular very often as the body needs time to figure out its own cycle. You were really young then when you got your period at 11, so your body was also likely still invovled with making you grow, grow your pelvis bones and hips etc. It probably would have taken you until 16 or so to have a regular period. That process is natural though. I was 16 when I first got my period and even though it was pretty regular, it also took much longer to finish the bleed (which usually lasted 10 days or so and also it was 33 days between the last day of my period and the first day of my new period. My bleeding was super heavy, like I ran thrugh a pad within an hour. I always would stain my pants, and I was super annoyed when people said that this never happens..no I can attest, it happens!!
At around 20 my period started to become more regular. It got to a 30 day cycle, with almost excatly a 5 day bleed, 2 days heavier, 2 days medium and one day light. I went on hormonal birth control as I was on accutene for a year and I honestly loved my mental well being. I guess someone told me that hormonal birth control gives one a taste how pregnancy will be just much more intense. I can't really attest to that though, as my pregnancy was one trimester of being super nauseas and then though happy super emotional. But anyways I liked birthcontrol, as I had awesome skin, no pores, no acne, no mood swings, feeling pretty stable all the time. Only downside was that I was not at all arroused. I used to get arroused usually day 5 onwards from my cycle until ovulation. And then still some days into luteal phase. With hormonal birth control I felt literally nothing. I didnt get wet, I didnt get arroused, I didnt even feel like I wanted to orgasm. I liked it at that time as it allowed me to concenctrate on my studies and work. And after I went off it, it took my cycle 1 year to go back to its normal 30-31 day length as it still was used to the 28 day cycle. Also pimples came around that time of the month, however after some time my hormones really regulated and I found a way on how to play around it. I was lucky though to plan my life a bit around my cycle and whenever I had to push myself at times where I would have better just kept resting I could and can see a difference.
Now after pregnancy I felt the coming back into a cycle was less aprubt than with suddenly stopping birth control. As I breastfed and still am but not as much, my cycle would come back 10 days before my childs first birthday. That was also the time when I stopped breastfeeding as much and reduced it to 3 times a day. I think my body could slowly ease itself into fertility again.
I was contemplating on getting back on hormonal birth control, as with a child I really feel there is no room for moodiness and it can take a lot of self discipline at times and as my child is three I had no current plans on getting a nother the next year. I think birth control has its time and place. Well I can just say if you want to really be sure to not get pregnant hormonal birth control might be more effective as I am currently pregnant again. I took it as my destiny, but I would have liked to have 1-2 years more to ease myself into the new situation of motherhood. Also my oldest child would have been much oder than and not as needy in terms of attention and I would have had enough time to regenerate energy and strength. But its ok, just saying natural cycles isnt always as accurate..

It’s important to emphasize the effectiveness of different forms of birth control as it relates to preventing pregnancies. Forms of birth control such as the pill, IUD, nexplanon are 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. Naturally monitoring your cycle can bring that effectiveness down to 75%. Adding hormones into the body has a right place, right time and reason for it. Most times than not, it is effective in alleviating pms symptoms, regulating periods and preventing pregnancies. Please find the best solution out there for you for whatever concern you are looking to address. ❤

I'm very glad I haven't been on birth control. I tried it for like a month but was bad at remembering to take it. I gave up, and I have a family history of various cancers and was always nervous that the added hormones would be bad for my body. As I've gotten older, my periods are a lot more regular, and my bleeding is more prodictable. My emotions are still all over the place. But I'll take the two weeks of emotional problems versus dealing with emotional and hormonal problems all the time.

I was on the IUD for four years and it was so bad that I had to go to the hospital because I was having so much abdominal pain. I told them that it was probably the IUD but they said that I was fine and everything looked normal. I couldn’t take the pain because it would come and go so I took the decision to remove it. I feel so much better now and I’m just fallowing my cycle now. However, kinda getting my body back to normal took time and I was literally crying because I was so confused with my hormones.

    Hi Vivian,
Thank you so much for posting this video. It is so helpful and so important to make sure we educate ourselves, as women, on the options we have for birth control. I experienced similar things as you, as far as trying different birth controls and being on that hormonal/ emotional rollercoaster. I experienced so many issues afterwards, ovarian cysts heavy bleeding and cramping and when I’d see my primary they’d tell me it’s common and it’s fine. I would cry so much and feel hopeless because I had to just endure that pain. It’s unfortunate but at the end of the day the medical field is a business and they get paid more when they prescribe more.
I’m still healing physically and emotionally, trying to find the best way to track my cycle naturally and give my body the love and care it needs. Thank you again ❤️

I regret being on birth control. I had nexplanon and bled for a 1-2 months straight at a time. I also had horrible depression when in it. Then I got on the pill and took it religiously and guess what kids talking the pill alone doesn’t prevent pregnancy 100%. I got pregnant twice when I was on it. Then I finally got off due to all the symptoms I was having. I didn’t get my period for 6 months and had to go to the doctors so they can give me pills. Over a year later and I now feel the same as before I took birth control.

On the implant, too! I still have two years to go, but I asked my doctor about removal before getting it. It’s the same process as when we get it. They numb the arm, find the implant, make the incision, and take it out. If you want to get another one, they place one in.
Then there’s the healing, and your hormones also have to adjust to getting it removed/replaced. It can take a while before your body settles with the change.
