Labrie will forever have my respect. He has been through the ringer of vocal issues. Imagine being able to sing like this and lose that ability because of SHELLFISH. you would atleast fall into deep depression if not quit singing entirely. Instead of quitting, he has persevered and been the front man of this band, bringing us amazing performances to this day. the frustration of not sounding the way you used to, and distain from fans who want him booted and cant appreciate what he is for the band would defeat most people. My favorite vocalist of all time and my role model.

I love this era of DT. JP with that Ibanez, Kevin Moore, Mike Portnoy still in the band, Labrie's voice is still kicking, JM and JP moving about the stage and headbanging. The music was technical but still raw enough to be emotive and powerful.
The new DT is great and all, but this is so much to live up too haha!

Good god, Labrie was just incredible in these days. That high end, Freddie Mercuryesque sheen in his upper range is the thing that just never returned after his voice blew out the next year. He's improved greatly from where he was in the mid 90s but man, you forget what an absolute monster he was. Even so, he's got one of the more difficult jobs on the touring circuit. These guys have played marathon shows on an almost nightly basis on tour for the last 20+ years and play everything in the original key. When you consider that, the guy is STILL an absolute monster.

when this came out it was nirvana and the grunge genre dominating the airwaves. hair metal had died out and there was just nothing out there. Then there was Dream Theater and holy shit it changed the whole scope of technical prowess blew away everything out there. Fates Warning always was great but just missed the mark. This band changed the way I listened to music forever. I got to hang with them alot back in the day in jersey and despite their genius they were just down to earth musicians no ego. I will always be a fan no matter how labrie sounds. times change you grow older and your voice changes so what. They toured like this non stop for years and are still touring.

I think the heart of DT left when Kevin Moore stepped away..

I think a lot was lost when the seven string nightmare began. Maybe it didn’t happen in awake because they were experimenting with that heavier sounds for the first time. In their first albums bass, guitar and keyboards served the song on a perfect harmony. None stood out above the other, kevin moore kept it simple (but beautiful) with his choir sounds (wich, i think really helped to honor the name of the band. I think the “dream theater” name lost sense over time), john myung had a LOT of melodic lines, take learning to live as an example. Nowdays he is just relegated to a rhytmic function, playing the same riffs that petrucci plays on his 7 string but lower, wich makes no sense. By last, at that time john petrucci didn’t throw crazy speedy solos on every song. He had equal presence on that holy trinity of harmony.
When rudess came in they started slowly to drown john myung between the keyboard and guitar. They lost that simple, but beautiful and effective keyboard sounds. They kept it on metropolis pt 2, but since six degrees rudess started to play TOO MUCH leads. If we add to that the fact that john petrucci started to add a second guitar in the songs with the purpose of not losing the rhytm guitar when he was playing leads, they totally killed john myung. I mean, it is like dream theater have two guitarrist in the studio, they destroyed that perfect harmony trinity.
Lets take a random old song as an example: a change of seasons, particularly the part of the final guitar solo before sherinian keyboard solo. So, you have a sober petrucci solo clean of ego, a moore synth sound supporting with a much more emotional vibe and a myung beautiful bass line that you can actually HEAR, filling a lot of space between moore and petrucci. If they would have writen that some years after, petrucci would add a second guitar supporting him behind his solo, the keyboard would grow a big ego and will not want to play just a chord with a synth effect. That would be unacceptable. By last and the most sad thing: the beautiful bass line that you can actually hear and that can breath between the harmony would be totally killed and myung would be relegated to be drowning behind a second guitar that just exist on the studio. playing the same riff that a overgained 7 string guitar so you can barely hear him, i dont know, maybe because they hate him. The old perfect harmony killed.
Thats how a band transforms on a bad joke of themselves.
