    Just wanted to say, thank you for being such a breath of fresh air that the Lego community desperately needed. From your reviews, your customs, your top 10 lists, etc. everything just feels so genuine. Not to mention the production quality from the video angles, video quality, audio quality, and the choice of background music just completes the whole vibe. Thank you for doing what you do and the way you do it. I hope you have a great 2023.

    The skeleton dungeon really is an anomaly. I couldn't believe how much goodness was packed into it even halfway thru the build. 'New' chest, New micromob head, new disk print, more of the fun upside down flower piece, great yellow figure that really stands out (it also make a great contrasting duo with the nether bastion fella). A legitimate S-tier for the entire Minecraft theme.
    The way lego has handled GWP sets has been trully pitiful. Their website has possible the worst deals you can find for sets since they regularly come out 30% off too boot on amazon and such. The gifts with purchase are the only thing that really motivate me to get sets from their store but then they make the whole process the most awkward thing ever. Recent promos however have been released as VIP point purchases, so I wonder if they're looking to change how these work out for the future. I still utterly hate them being time limited deals, though.

    • @CheeseyStudios
      @CheeseyStudios  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Pretty much 100% agree with everything here. I get why that they want us to purchase all our sets directly from LEGO, as they get all the profits, but it always means people will miss out on some really cool sets and promos because of it.... The promo periods get shorter, and the price thresholds get higher.

    • @sully1626

      Agree on the GWP dude. Month late since I'm not a member (sorry) but I was really wanting to get the forest hideout - had no idea it was a thing during the original promo, then missed the second promo time period by two days because I misread the dates :(

    Videos like this are why I love this channel. It brings exposure to sets you just don’t hear much about. I don’t think I could have predicted a top 10 of 2022 without the UCS Crest, Eiffel Tower, or Lion Knight’s Castle, but Caleb made it work. Your take on sets is very unique compared to other channels who just want LEGO to go as big as possible, whereas you are more concerned with the story of a set as well as affordability. It’s also cool to see you include sets that you would never get, but pay respect to the designers. Great video!

      Thank you so much! I know there's probably already a hundred top 10 videos out there. I wanted to make some worthwhile that hopefully introduces people to some sets they wouldn't have thought of much before (or maybe even seen), and it sure seems to be doing the trick!

    My favourite of this year has to be the Lion Knights' castle. It's very expensive, but at least in my opinion it's just such a beautiful and cool looking set. It has some fun features, and I really love how many secret tunnels and hideouts the forestmen have. Also, it has over 20 minifigures.

    I like that you kept the sets in the affordable range. However, the best set of 2022 has to be the Lion Knights' Castle. That set is an absolute joy to build, and can be either a display set or a play set.

    • @CheeseyStudios
      @CheeseyStudios  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a castle guy, I do appreciate it. The cost was of course what scared me out. I still like the set though, and would love to own it one day!

    • @asteralium
      @asteralium ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely deserves an honorable mention because it looks amazing, but the pricetag is pretty high. The build looks like everything I could ever want in a castle, but even as someone who’s wanted the theme to come back since the day it left I’m hesitant to pull the trigger on it. Hoping for a sale.

    Also yeah, King Triton is a total DILF.

    I am with you on the Disney Princess theme. A lot of those sets I just don’t have the space to buy, but wow. They are beautiful. The colors in particular really catch my attention, as there’s always this nice mixture of neons and pastels, not to mention all of the opalescent and gold details. And I love myself some fantasy builds, and this theme delivers. It’s one of the only themes to capture architecture from a variety of cultures. The Madrigal House in particular is just beautiful and one of the only times I remember LEGO making a set inspired by the architecture of Latin America. I definitely want to get a few soon.

    I _really_ love that your top-10 list wasn’t basically just “here are the 10 most expensive sets of the year”.
    I’ve seen multiple best 2022 Lego sets lists (mostly on TH-cam), and most of them have had nothing under $100 on them, or even nothing under $200. I understand why many people think that-and there’s only one set I’ve seen on several lists that I think really doesn’t belong there-but it just feels lazy and unhelpful. Ok, sure, in most cases a $400 set will be better than a $60 set by most measures, but nobody needs a reviewer to tell them that.
    I think for a list like this, judging sets against comparable sets is much more useful-a set with $100 of value and a $60 pricetag is arguably better than a set with $200 of value and a $200 pricetag. (Understanding, of course, that measuring that value is _highly_ subjective.) So, circling back to where I started: I love your list. Don’t agree with all of it, but that doesn’t matter (plus, when I tried to make a list, I couldn’t get it under ~25-most years there are way more than 10 sets that are good enough to be on a top-10 list). I think it’s a _great_ list and a list that it’s helpful to share (especially since most of the sets are affordable and still available). Thanks for making this video!

    • @CheeseyStudios
      @CheeseyStudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      Really glad you appreciate this! I know there's a lot of top 10 lists that were made, so I wanted to make one that hopefully added something to the conversation, and maybe introduced people to some sets they really weren't all that familiar with. I'm really glad it seems to have worked!

    While I only picked up 12 sets this year from 2022 not counting all the older sets I got, I would also put the Galaxy Explorer at #1. You get SO much for the price! (I also got mine for $75 at Walmart.) The building experience is something else though & it’s really cool to see how all these complex angles come together later on. Plus, the instructions have interesting notes throughout which are interesting to read like they only used colors available at the time for this new model besides the improved light grey color & that the set was in development for 9 years. Then the set comes with alternate instructions for the smaller versions of the model with the 2 man ship & 1 man ship which makes it essentially a creator 3 in 1 set! There’s just SO much to love about this set & it’s definitely my favorite of the year! Can’t wait for the new Blacktron Cruiser 40580! It’s actually up on Lego’s website now but only if you have a direct link to the page. Also, I think Tiago Catarino has a review of it up now.

    For me, the number one set from this year was The Mighty Bowser. As a huge Nintendo fan, the Mario line never really spoke to me, but once they revealed the Bowser set, I was sold. The set released before my birthday on Halloween, and I didn't get it then, but I DID get it for Christmas. I built the set and boy, it's something.
    Bowser is built like a truck. Almost everything is super Technic'd into place, and I don't know if I could break it even if I tried. Bowser weighs a LOT for a LEGO set, which is honestly great because he doesn't slide around everywhere. The base looks super cool and like it's straight out of Bowser's Castle. The moving arms and head make for a really fun play thing if you're bored, or even if you aren't, it's just that fun to do. There are a lot of cool pieces and building techniques that the entire building process I was like "Wow, that's cool." Easily a 10/10 set for me. If you're a Mario or even just a Nintendo fan, I HIGHLY recommend it if you can afford it. Sure, the NES might be a fun bit of nostalgia for some, and the ? Block is a neat display piece, but just the IDEA of having a LEGO built Bowser statue is awesome.

    • @CheeseyStudios
      @CheeseyStudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be totally honest, I think Bowser was 11 or 12 on my list - so so close! Even though I'm not a Mario guy, that set was beautiful. Definitely worthy of an honorable mention!

    The Motorised lighthouse is easily in my opinion one of the most underrated sets of the year. I can understand its poor sales though.

    My favorite set this years was easily the Lion Knights' Castle. As a kid me and my friends were always playing medieval and making worlds that translated into Lego, and the Castle was just a jewel of a set that held so much nostalgia. Yes, it's pricy, but for all the mini figures and playability you get it is so wonderful (especially contrasted with Lego's other "adult" sets that are $500+ that function as dust collectors). Definitely one of if not my favorite Lego set in my collection!

    All of these sets are so good! I was surprised to see the Galaxy Explorer Redux as number 1, I bought this set for around $75 for my dad who used to have a bunch of the original Lego System space sets, including the original Galaxy Explorer. He hasn't opened and built it yet but I'm excited for him! Just the box alone and the appearance of the set is really nice.
    One set that I really liked from 2022 was the Lego Star Wars Ambush on Ferrix from Andor. It was a really surprisingly fun set to build and it has very sturdy construction that uses a lot of interesting techniques. The main build has very few gaps, has lots of great pieces, and the speeder that comes with it has to be my favorite speeder design from any Lego set. It has a really hefty price tag to it but it was really fun to build. Plus it's from Andor, which the show was such a huge surprise and has to be one of if not my favorite Star Wars show.

    I couldn't agree more with #1 and #3, although my copy of 10497 is on its way to me, and I don't have the forest hideout, they are fantastic sets that lego need to do more like. Luckily it seems like they will at least in the GWP section with the Blacktron Cruiser, but they really should have more "modernized classic lego" in the $20-$40 price region. Sure it would probably give lego less of a profit in the short term than if the sets were GWPs, but I feel in the long term the profit would be much higher.

    There were a lot of nice sets this year, but probably my favorite one (and that I purchased at a local LEGO store in my country with a good discount) was the Majestic Tiger. While I usually like more vehicles and machinery in LEGO, I'm liking also giant animals built with bricks. And the Majestic Tiger is just gorgeous, and probably the best detailed LEGO animal until now. The building experience was fun, the torso is built inside as flesh and bones, and the little creek with the red bird is a nice addition n_n And the alternate builds are also nice, I was quite impressed with the koi fish.
    If you like the Starry Night, I wonder if you would like also the Great Wave of Kanagawa, which is going to be released on January. Since I'm a Japanese Language Teacher, I'm seeing myself buying it :3 Also waiting for Indiana Jones 5 at theaters to see what kind of sets will LEGO release around the theme ^O^
