  • Prince Charles Edward was Queen Victoria's youngest grandchild. Brought up at Claremont House and educated at Eton until he was 14, Charles Edward was forced by Queen Victoria to take up the Dukedom of Coburg in Germany after a series of unexpected deaths of uncles and cousins. Transformed overnight from a British Prince to a German Duke, his life was altered in ways he could never have imagined.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

It was my understanding that a big reason Charles Edward wasn't treated more harshly was that his grandson ( born 1946) was the future king of Sweden and people didn't want to embarrass the Swedish royal family. Not only is that not talked about in this documentary, but the fact that King Carl Gustav is his grandson isn't even mentioned.

As a German that has grown up trying to understand how the 3rd Reich could have happened, how my own grandfathers could be complicit in such horrors I find the underlying sentiment and excuses that are being made in this episode quite distasteful!! It is dishonoring to the memory of the uncounted victims…
This is all presented in a very emotional and imho biased sort of way…yes, he was sent away to a foreign country, had to learn the language and adapt to Prussian Militarism…but he succeeded and did well - until the times turned tumultuous…his story reads to me as examplary for all of Germany! His cousin the Kaiser didn‘t object to the war, his family reinvented themselves to the exclusion of all their own roots because of popular sentiment , which unfortunately cut his ties to England…he then fought for his cousin against Russia, was made to feel obsolete by socialist reforms and turned to a deluded Austrian who promised to lead Germany back to former Glory…and did his best to help him gain power and respectability.
One could argue that by truly buying into the Nazi delusions of race and superiority although most of his family was british he was even more to blame!! He should have known better.
Why wasn‘t he hanged? Why didn‘t he have to spend years in prison? Exceptions were being made because he was rich and old….but try not to explain away his guilt!!

The British monarchy is all about self preservation. With the demise of the empire they in actual fact have very little power, real relevance or purpose. So they desperately perpetuate this romantic myth of representing the soul, identity and glory of Britain. But underneath it all they know they are neither truly of Britain nor do they really represent any great empire anymore - and anything that exposes that is an existential threat . So they have, throughout recent history, swiftly and ruthlessly thrown family members who threaten the narrative under the bus. The Romanovs , Edward VIII , poor Charles Edward, their German relatives like the Mountbattens , and even Prince Harry today have all been victims , sometimes tragically, of the deeply insecure and toothless monarchy.
