I came to watch this video thinking that it would be a completely different kind of talk... I must be honest: the talk moved me to tears and absolutely hit the mark! Depending on the perspective you give to a story, it can be a very different story! We are tough to love certain things and hate others, we are indoctrinated on what is right and what is wrong... sometimes all it takes is an image, a small clip to change our vision of something we found fearful before, for ever! I will never get that shark out of my mind... for the right reasons! THANK YOU for this talk!

Even the search for reason, for knowledge, is precipitated by the feeling of a lack of knowing and a desire to know.
As an artist I wonder often what approach to take in my paintings, drawings and abstract videos to try to make people realise that if we do not mend our ways we are going to loose our planet as we do know it now. Being a visual contemporary artist, it is cool to be cool, and being cool often means staying away from narrative approaches, being weary of being sentimental, being afraid of showing what we really care about. Well timeless art was never afraid of showing feelings, of caring with passion, of embodying a point of view. Think Guernica. There Picasso made not only a point but a formal statement so powerful that enthrals us often to the point we want to know more about an obscure fact in a forgotten past war. Yet that fact is both timeless and contemporary and looking at Guernica helps us to understand what happens today, every day in too many parts of the world. Thank you Mr. Atkin for making clear that if we want to convince people of what is the real threat to humanity we need with our art to speak to their heart.

I agree contemporary art exalts coolness, which usually means carelessness (or appearance of carelessness), which means any overt message is decidedly uncool. Ironically, this thinking is really limited to the art community. It does not extend to the buyers of art or the population as a whole. By measure of scale, the most influential artistry of our time is coming from Disney's films and major video games. In these mediums they share very overt messages and impact many people. So I think you should tell your stories and share messages in your art in the way that best pleases YOU. All timeless art is done to please the artist himself/ herself. That also ensures that what you do is 100% authentic, meaningful, and uniquely yours.

What's with all the comments about an incorrect title??? The title fits perfectly with the content of the talk. He's talking about cinematographic storytelling and how if you incorporate the head vs the heart methodology into it, you can make a difference. What's misleading about it? Edit: the only thing wrong with this is the youtube's algorithm which suggests this if you watch a lot of writing tips videos

The way he delivered this speech, preparing the facts and important details with emotional development is one of the most effective writing techniques I've ever heard and taken to heart. It's not just about sharks and dolphins, but its about the way he told the stories of sharks and dolphins. He exemplified how to most effectively educate and inspire through story.
Simple solution: people will admire the great white shark if they are taught to admire authority, hierarchy, aggression, strength, honorable violence, and dominance.
That was a powerful talk. However, there should definitely be a trigger warning for disturbing imagery. Some people feel these things deeply and having that sprung up suddenly takes time and effort to recover from. If you're sensitive like me, make sure you have time planned to regroup afterward. It's not cool to think you can pop this into your schedule for 24 minutes, and then be left in a mood that's inappropriate for the next thing on your daily schedule.
Endangered species capital of the world: wouldn't that be Brazil? People need to stop worrying about their own country and start worrying about the loss of the Rain Forests of South America.
Clickbait on steroids lol. A good story, but quite a misleading title...also some of the statistics are not completely accurate when you go research them and dig deeper. However it is a good story about environmental awareness, and the title should have included that.

Well, it *is* a lesson in storytelling, even the title. He actually does 2 jobs in 1 talk - giving us this lesson *and* making us aware of some nature problems. Not even that - it is 2 lessons in one: Not only how storytelling works, but also how we can be manipulated through our limbic system. I don't care about the title being (only slightly) misleading, the content works just fine (and clickbait does the opposite - it tries to make us click for content that is not worth our attention).
yeah, i know. i did like the speech as a whole, including the sharks issues and how the popular media has and will keep playing a role in it. my issue it's just that when i read a title like "Cinematic Storytelling- The Heart vs. The Head" i don't expect *any* of it to be about sharks, so when a considerate amount of the speech touches this subject, one might feel it a bit misleading. i understand that the tittle won't have the same feeling if sharks were somehow in it, but i'll probably be even better for the video? since i think sharks is a more searched term than storytelling and it might bring a bigger audience? no sources to back that up so who knows, i might be wrong. still, you're right that it's really just an insignificant issue, the speech it's still really interesting besides the tittle issue
