Speedflying Fiss-Ladis and Zugspitze

    A dream came true when i got to speedfly down Zugspitze, Germanys highest peak, bordering Austria. I spent a week to get this 1 flight, living in my station wagon, waiting for decent conditions. I went up 2 times, but took the gondola down again because of too gusty winds and thermal conditions.
    This is a mountain you want to fly early in the morning, or on cloudy days. preferably in the winter. The thermals gets really strong on the bare rock on the south side. and it can make the take off difficult if you dont have wind from west
    My flight was little over 9 AM in early september, and the thermals had already begun. you can see in the second roll after take off, that the air was a little bumpy. but i knew by looking at the grass and trees on the way up, that just below the top, the air was calm and smooth.
    Definitely want to go back, many cool lines to be flown there
    After Zugspitze, i went to Fiss-Ladis where i stayed for a couple of weeks, nice place, cheap tickets, and more stable weather. Maybe a place best suited for paragliding (in the summer), but much fun to be had with an speedwing also.

      Thanks! if you google Schirmbar Schönjoch Fiss, you can see witch mountain top it was. The take off i found was about 500 meters east from the Schirmbar, following the trail. And the flight i took was southward down to Fiss
      i didnt find much info online about good speedflying lines there, but i think the place have some potensial for som nice cruisy lines. Are you planning on going there?

      Yes, I live not far away, we were there a few times with the family biking, but have not yet found anything that would be good for speedflying, but your line looks very good, maybe I'll go up there in the summer
      Thanks for the info🤙

      @@davidsimon9324 I live about an hour away from Fiss. Do you know how the farmers and cable car owners react to speedflying there? Looks like it really got some nice lines!

    Does the wing creates some ground effect? Is there a way to slightly rise above obstacles?

    • @MarosVice908
      @MarosVice908  ปีที่แล้ว

      the simple answer is that i don't know.
      But i think the ground effect is more prevalent in fixed wing gliders/planes, because of their wingspan. i have only 4.8 meter wingspan on this wing
      the way i rise above obstacles is keeping the glider at full speed. i know that if i have trims out, and use as little brakes as possible, and doing some slight turns with weight shift, i have the energy to ''pop'' it about 15-20 meters up in the air.
      That is also where some of the safety margins are. Always keeping the wing at full speed, and being ready on brakes, in case i need to get clear of the terrain fast.

      hello Mr Mooseman
      I have tried, but did not like it, i takes away some of the feeling of flying, and its also kind of an distraction
