Maya Deren's Film Philosophy

Born April 29, 1917, this year would have been Maya Deren’s 100th birthday. In celebration of her contribution to experimental cinema, this video by Laura Ivins outlines some of the key principles informing Deren’s filmmaking.

Alexander Hammid is rarely mentioned, but he and Maya Deren were partners who co-wrote and co-directed the many amazing and impactful films now enjoyed by younger generations. Hammid performed the cinematography as well.

Great video. I have never studied Deren in depth or read her essays, but there are a lot of things you point out which must have had great influence on Brakhage as well, especially amateurism and the hand-held camera. Thanks for bringing some light on where these ideas come from.

Yes, she was in Ritual in a Transfigured time. There were a number of artists of note in the party scene in that movie, they were Daren's friends in the 1940s.
