Cool adventure exploring the private island. I loved that old structure that was out there. I bet it was awesome back in its glory days. Thanks for taking us along. Keep on sailing and be safe. 👍
Another great video It is unreal that someone would let that property just totally collapse into the state it is in now. Such a shame Keep up the good work Be safe and smile
I used a Solar Shower for years to take hot showers. The trick to it is to keep it in the sun but out of the wind. Sometimes I'd have it on deck with a companionway board in front of it. They are also good for saving water. I'd use about a gallon per shower. I was lucky in that there was a hatch in the head above the shower bin. This allowed me to lay the bag on the deck and run the hose inside. By not hanging the bag, it lasted years. If you have to hang it, it will not last very long.
This is a great idea! I have a small gallon shower bag but didn't cross my mind to just run the pipe down through the hatch. I will definitely be using this method next time. Thank you
I am an old codger. I vacation Key West in the mid 1980s. I loved it there. I felt it was my favorite place in the whole world. I became disabled in the mid 1990s, but have persevered up to now. I think I want to fulfill my dreamof living on a boat for the rest of my life and I want to do it in Key West. So I am thankful for your videos. If you hear of any sailboats that are reasonably priced and are for sale around where you live, please feel free to contact me and let me know. There might be a small finders fee for you.
That's a great dream to have! Id also look at Marathon for boats. You aren't too far from Key West and the marinas are a bit cheaper and it's a little quieter in town. I will keep an ear out for any good deals for you!
Fantastic content! It truly baffles me why some individuals feel compelled to ruin spaces like this. I would relish the opportunity to take on a property of this nature. I've been thoroughly enjoying your channel-keep those intriguing posts coming!
Yes it's sad to see, I think a lot of damage was probably from hurricane Irma that came through this area in 2017 and the. Of course some vandalizing since then
Man :( It is sad to see dreams die on a lonely island. Pretty interesting though. And that glass block wall was WAY cool. Great job on the clean up and rigging of the jack lines. Also, quite impressive that you do your laundry aboard! Looking forward to your next vid.
Hey Damon, you are doing good, keep posting we will watch whatever you do.. and well done with all the chores in and around the boat. Thanks for posting once again and take care, till later 👍
Lived in my van in key west winter 1983..rained for 2 weeks almost left..had to dry out..fun times back then I was 23 years old..lots of wind surfers..enjoy your adventure but I would recommend getting a job with a pension before 30 years old..I joined fire dept..at 25 retired at 46..not bad deal
Really beautiful place in its day! Thanks for taking us along Damon! keeping with the pizza theme, Digiornos pizza 🍕 has came out with a thanksgiving 🦃 🍕 pizza ! Have a great week ! 👋
Damon, FYI- in the world of lines for a boat, polyester tends to be more UV resistant than nylon. All your better brand lines will be polyester covered.
You need a sailing buddy lol? I'm going to be buying a catamaran hopefully next spring. And sailing around the Caribbean. None the less I look forward to your videos every week.
I smash the like button before I watch D.R. It saves time. I hope you have a Crocodile Dundee answer if your raft encounters a big reptile. Why can't people ashore give you more fresh water for drinking and washing? When I'm not about to use an anchor, keeping it amidships and low makes more sense than weighing down the bow. A lot of boaters are not very conscious of their weight and trim.
@@damonrust seen one guy use a flexible water tank and electric pump(probably 50 or 60 gal)to fill up his tank from the dock in Georgetown out to his boat.
If you can get a water maker, i suggest getting one of those portable washing machines from Home Depot. I get water delivered to my boat and I just wash my clothes on my boat and hang them out to dry.
That would be a very nice upgrade. I've looked into water makers a little but they are a bit pricey for me right now so a project for a little further down the line
@damonrust you can always DIY a water maker. There are groups on facebook for it. Much cheaper than buying a unit. Can also buy each piece one by one until you have all the parts.
I would suggest a lay out of what you want to accomplish ie watermaker , portable washer, solar shower and let us know what you are able to put on that boat so we can all chip in a dollar or two for certain projects.
@ I'm going to as well, but I have a windless pretty close up front and the Mantus is 27" long from roller and Rocna is 24" same 45 lb. Rocna think it is. At that weight I'm sure it will hold.
I see you added to your wish list. Sadly Amazon continues to reply items can’t be delivered. Not sure what you need to do, if anything, to enable your wish list.

Go after that abandoned house / property ! Check if it is for sale... ? That would be a GREAT anchor place. What is the story/history there? Young Men like you need to look at houses like that as an Opportunity to steal a home!
Isn't it mindblowing how 15 years of neglect, salt air, and not being used can turn what was once probably a very beautiful home and private retreat, into something that's almost ready for demolition? Glad to see you're doing well though it sounds like you might have a bit of a cold going on? lol Stay healthy and safe Damon and keep living that best life! Great stuff
It’s not good for a diesel to idle at low RPM. You should run it up to 1000. If you can put it under a load even better, unfortunately you really can’t do that at anchor.
Those motors also run hard after doing so,burning off any accumulated carbon. The previous owner of my boat did a lot of idling, and I ended up having to rebuild the top end due to carbon build up. Either way, he can research it.
@@SOLDOZER Semi trucks typically don't have separate generators for night use, but instead utilize an "Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)" which acts like a small generator, allowing them to power their cabin's air conditioning, heating, and appliances without idling the main truck engine while parked overnight; essentially, they use the APU instead of idling to stay comfortable while sleeping in the cab.

Wow! That’s prime real estate in the Keys! Surprised no one has bought it and fixed it up!
I agree! You would think there's plenty of people that want their own private island
Thank you so much for your videos.

That was awesome😊 I like the exploring it's a damn shame a house of vandalized out in the middle of nowhere

You're the man Stanley! They have been pretty generous and let me have plenty of water. I just get lazy sometimes running the jugs to shore and back

@1:07, I See an ex military MEP_something/Onan diesel generator peaking out.
Is your shower salt water or fresh water just curious?
Fresh water but would be nice to have salt and then rinse with fresh
Is that the 330# anchor pulled up and on the bow?
The 330 is still underwater. On the bow is a Mantus 45lb M1
@ how are you able to find out how to get back to where you started? I really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for the reply
I've got a floating marker on it so I can see the anchor when sailing up to it
Since I have just started watching, my next question, you moor your boat out in the ocean and not at a dock?
Yes, made a diy mooring so much cheaper than a slip here in the keys
Damon if you run out of cash you can always head back to the bank/office for 6mths, that is what I do every so often
Yes exactly, figured I'd sail till I ran out and could always get a job again
Awesome video!
What size mantus anchor do you have?
It's a 45lb M1
@ ya with same boat I'm about ready to upgrade my anchor myself, was thinking the 35 but 100% be good with the 45!🤙
@@damonrust I went to Mantus to buy a 45 pound and they talked me into a 35. And my boat os prolly a tad bigger.
Their sizing chart showed a 35 for me too but I decided to go a size up for peace of mind in any storms or poor anchorages

It’s not good for a diesel to idle at low RPM. You should run it up to 1000. If you can put it under a load even better, unfortunately you really can’t do that at anchor.
Trucks stops across America are full of trucks that idle all night, every night. These trucks often have over 1MM miles on them.
@@SOLDOZER You can add locomotives to the list of diesels that run all the time.

Ah nope, diesels are low rpm motors. they are designed to run at lower rpms just fine. That is actually what makes them have longevity.
