Got to love the way the TV shows loads of people at highways in a control room surrounded by screens. The reality sounded like Janice was working from home sending an email asking someone if they could change the matrix boards when they get back from lunch 😂

he spoke to the CCC (Customer Contact Centre) and not those in the control room. A control works log would be setup and that log gets passed over to the control room - exactly the same way as the Police, Fire or Ambo work.

@@terryfoster1706 it's hard because the only way we get to speak to CCC is via the log.. we can call customers directly though from the control room so we should be doing that to speak with the people on scene. Much faster resolutions that way!

You would think, though, that when it comes to safety on a "smart" motorway, that immediate communication between the call takers and the technical people would be a priority. I mean immediate, person to person, voice communication, not a text chat system or web based "problem tracker". The call centre should ideally be in the room next door, so if anything major or rapid occurs, they can literally stand up from their desk and walk through a door to tell someone what's happening.

For those that dont know this is an everyday occurrence for motorway recovery operatives. Absolutely disgusting behaviour from people who simply do not care whether people live or die. What you see on the TV is not the reality of recovery life. If you ever wonder why recovery from a motorway isn't cheap you know the answer now. Simple recoveries put our lives at risk day in day out and take hours instead of minutes!! Another trying circumstance expertly sorted by GDB Rescue & Recovery! Spot on Greg!

Every hour the motorways people keep everyone waiting is £100 (probably more in reality) someone is paying for absolutely nothing to happen.
If the breakdown is a commerical vehicle, now you've got the potential for maybe £1000 per hour or wasted time between everyone involved.
All for the sake of arbitrary targets in how many lane closures they have per month.

@@TheRoadGuy-rm5ci From my experience on the M40 some years ago you have TWO sections of 'Highways' to deal with. 1: the control room & 2: the guys on the road. Control are the chocolate fire guard, the guys on the road try to be helpful.
07:03 northbound M40, blew a top hose tugging a 25ft Tri Axle. Couldn't get a signal on my phone, walked to the road phone. Spoke to control, told them what had happened, gave the my breakdown details, reg number etc. "LEAVE IT WITH ME" the voice said. 1 1/4 hours on a Highways England Shogun pulled up behind the trailer. They hadn't been sent by control, just cruising along the road and saw me. I was on the hard shoulder on a long left hand bend, any one of the trucks that strayed over the line would have wiped my rig out. They towed me off the motorway to a layby where I was able to phone a proper control and get help.
As for the so-called "Smart motorways", there is NOTHING smart about them, they are a major disaster waiting to happen and probably devised by a lycra clad cyclist.

Stay safe, stay warm.

Not wishing to sound sexist but some of the women in @ Highways are brilliant @ What they do.THEY ARE SO WELL ORGANISED! Some of the chaps look 'fed up' doing their job which is not a very comforting good impression
/presentation when YOU, Recovery Manager & customer STUCK IN A BLOODY LIVE LANE!!!!!!
In order to protect People/ passengers that break down on Motorways / carriageways, they should automatically( IF THEY WATCHING THEIR CAMERAS???!!!!!!) secure the lane on the Matrix / send a Highways or the Police to temp close the lane off. It's THAT SIMPLE TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE!!!!!!
TO BE HANGING AROUND WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SECURE A LIVE LANE FOR ALMOST AN HOUR IS FAR TOO LONG!!!!!!! HIGHWAYS WOULDNT WAIT THAT LONG IN BEING 'SITTING DUCKS'!!!!!!!!! YOU & THE CUSTOMER HAVE FAMILIES & A HOME TOO!!!!!!!

I have no idea what he was going on about in terms of your red lights they are legal, also the issue with smart motorways is exactly what he said it is down to the nut behind the wheel, all it takes is one HGV to miss the sign and your dead. I think the displays are great but the hard shoulder should still remain it was only removed to save money a mixture of the two would be great. On control room staff it is the same across the board you have great ones and you have the jobsworths in all services as someone who used to work on private ambulances I am more than aware of those staff who have no idea. They should be required to sit in on a ride-along as part of the training for a week to see what the conditions are really like, I have had to work in live lane three once late at night and was so grateful when the highways staff turned up to move the vehicle, for all the grief they get they do a job I wouldn't want to do.

I had the exact same thing with a Womble trying to tell me I couldn’t have rear reds on my van. I said to him “I’d rather be arguing with you about them than my mrs talking to a undertaker about me” in this instance I was at a serious crash involving one of our coaches and there was a lot of traffic police on scene and they didn’t bat a eyelid. I’ve had police attendance at various jobs since and they say nothing. Highways’s need to mind their own bloody business!!!
Also that guy from highways is 💯 wrong, smart motorways are bloody dangerous and are simply motorway widening on the cheap! There is a reason they have stopped building any more of them, it’s because they are shite.

I literally do not understand HOW it takes them this long to get the process moving. You've given them a location, a safety justification, and an estimated time to complete which indicates minimal disruption will be caused. You're an established recovery firm whose name should be increasingly recognisable. It should then be a simple matter of data entry, followed by a rubber-stamp from a supervisor, to get it set up. I'd be surprised if it took as much as 5 minutes - and we've seen the actual Highways officers get it sorted out very promptly, with their direct line to the control room.
So the problem is evidently that the call centre do not have the same direct line to the control room that the mobile officers do.

Interesting that you have 'faith' in the red X to close off a lane, I certainly do not. The number of lorries I notice carrying on in the lane with the red X with an attitude of "I can see there is nothing in this lane, I will move out when I see the obstruction", must admit mainly foreign drivers. Ratchet straps are not a winch. They do not increase torque. They would not have pulled the trailer closer to the barrier unless you are heman, and if you were heman you could have pulled the trailer in the first place
If you had a come along winch yea you could have done that, no one carries one though

@@LTD347 Agree a Ratchet is not a winch, but can be rigged to give a mechanical advantage from trailer around the railing back to the trailer if you know what you are doing. But perhaps "waiting time" was also a factor. I can get my ratchets a lot tighter than I could by just pulling and by leading it upwards you are also reducing, albeit slightly the weight on the tyres. I've been stuck when my trailer slid sideways off a track in snow and used a similar method, so I know it works.

Brilliant video. How many questions does this raise? Why did it take so long to put a lane closure in place. It was ridiculous the amount of time you was at the road side. On another note when you were towing his trailer with his equipment are you insured? Just asking a question. Not being a knobhead 😂😂

I always try and move over even if there's someone in a hard shoulder or layby, if I can't I'll slow down. Had aggressive drivers before when moving over but rather keep road workers safe and ignore the road rage. I hate the motorways, seen them set the signs back to national a gantry too early so everyone went from 40 to national right next to the breakdown. I stuck to the 40 to get past them safely and lorry behind flashing, beeping and inches from my bumper. M27 Westbound is terrible for lorry drivers and M3 Northbound for car drivers.

Seems to be a few contributing problems.. staff not having the authority to do things and lack of training to understand the road side jobs that need to be done and the associated risks. They need to send their control room people out with recovery drivers for a day or two!

  • @Wishful-Thinking
    @Wishful-Thinking 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

They won’t widen hard shoulders or make ERA’s longer, wider, and more frequent on smart motorways because it would involve taking up extra land and would apparently cost extraordinary amounts of money when you add up the cost and space the extra land would take up over miles and miles of motorway / smart motorway. It’s a classic case of doing the absolute minimum in order to reduce cost and space. Everything! is about money these days even if it means the increased risk to life. I was told this during a CPC course with a section within it that dealt with smart motorways and motorways in general. 🙁
