I’m out here in Dallas and your neighborhood looks pretty much like my neighborhood. I just retired at 59 and a half, myself and enjoy your videos more than anyone else’s on retirement life. Keep up the good work.
Congratulations! It's just your typical suburban neighborhood. In between the train runs it's fairly quite, safe and comfortable living. I grew up in this area and actually remember the wooded lot this place used to be. Never thought I'd eventually live there one day. Take care and enjoy your retirement. Steve
I'm tickled to have it. It's going to be a lot of fun and a learning experience to redo it. Got a corner of the garden I plan to place it in if and when I ever get around to working on it. Take care. Steve
I like the thought of you can be as busy as you want to be in retirement. When I tell my peers, I'm investing heavily now to retire early, they look at me confused and ask "what are you going to do, sit on the couch all day?" It's a little funny and sad how some can't imagine a world in which they actually choose what projects they work on and can only imagine free time as recovering on the couch.
It's an old picture people have of retirement. A life of leisure doesn't have to be inactive. In retirement you can be just as busy as you want, whenever and how. I thought it was a great way to look at it. People don't go 100mph for decades then just stop completely. Thanks and take care. Steve
My primary hobby in retirement is Enjoying Life! There’s plenty to do (if I feel like doing something) and if I don’t, no harm, no foul! The eclipse (85% in the ATL area) just passed by - fun!
Exactly! I'm not much of a go-getter to begin with so the slower periods don't effect me much. Just piddling around and enjoying life for the most part. Just love it. Thanks and take care. Steve
You and I were rowing the same boat brotha. I retired with no hobbies and all I knew was I didn't want to work no more. I've filled my days with fixing/remodeling things around the house and doing at my pace.
Doing things at your own pace, when and how is just great. I can fool with something today, take a trip over the weekend and get back to it when I get back home. I don't have to have it done by 2pm because I've got to go to work at 4pm. My decision to retire was no harder than that. I didn't need to be there any more so I retired. Like John Madden said"Don't worry about the mule being blind, load the wagon". I loaded the wagon hobbies or not. Take care. Steve
Amen. Just to stop working is the only hobby I want right now. I'll figure out what to do with the time next year like you have done. Having said that I am looking to start a few projects that I have wanted to do for years.
That's all I was looking for out of retirement really. Once I got to the point I no longer need a job to live I called it quits. I was just tired and done with it all.The world is wide open and I'm open to giving it all a try. The time fills itself somehow. Take care. Steve
Great stuff Steve! You're one of my favorite youTubers now. I've got a list of house projects, some big, some small and now I get to tackle them at my pace (heavily influenced by my lovely bride's pace ha ha!) I've also got a list of hobby type stuff and some new creative things I'd like to pursue. Owning your own time is amazing bud.
It sure is. The freedom in retirement to just what you want, when and how just can't be beat. Spending a nice day like this doing whatever hits me beats a great day at work every time. Take care and thanks for the kind words. Steve
My zero days are important to me and love them. I actually scheduled 2 free days a week especially for me. Try to plan nothing for those days and just see what happens. Junk store looking, fishing, day trips, messing around or whatever. My way of forcing myself to relax and enjoy life a little. Thanks and take care. Steve
I just love it. Spend a lot of my day just piddling around. Cleaning the mower, fixing the shed ramp, cleaning the bird feeders etc. I accomplish nothing of real value but I'm active, busy and happy with it. Throw in a little fishing, travel, visiting family and other enjoyable things. There just ain't enough time. Take care. Steve
No problem boss glad to do it. Just something I've wanted to do for awhile now. Easy to build and brings me a lot of joy to sit for a few minutes during the day to watch and listen to the variety of birds that show up. Take care. Steve
Exactly what I did heading into retirement. I tried to get an idea of how being retired was actually like. Retirement was a mystery to me and you see and hear all the bad news surrounding retirement. Kind of unnerving. Actually once you get in it and start figuring things out it has been just great. Take care. Steve
Hey Steve, your comment about the amount of head space working takes up before you retire is dead on accurate. I've always knew it and thought about it but the way you phrase it is the best I've ever heard. I look back on those working years (I been retired 5 years) and now realize I never really could shut it off. And seriously I'm a pretty much care free personality but still, there's no vacation from the pressures of work. Thank God I was finally able to walk away from all that corporate garbage.
I never realized how much time and head space work takes up till I retired. Now that I'm retired even during my down time my mind is running with things I want to do and see. I just didn't have that ability when I was working. Work has a way of consuming every ounce of a person. I think the free mind space you get by retiring is a big part of the stress relief you feel. Thanks and take care. Steve
So much to see and do I've got to have a list so I can at least work through them. These were just a couple I'm looking forward to attempting this month. Throw in a road trip or 2 and other things I like doing and I'm just as busy as ever. Take care. Steve
Entering week 4 today of retirement. I’m going balls to the wall. Me and the wife went full time in the produce business we’ve been doing for the past 15yrs.
I didn't know you finally pulled the trigger. Good for you. Take a little time to enjoy it once in awhile. I got plans to get up that way this year and visit family. I might just stop by and buy a little fresh produce. Take care and enjoy. Steve
One thing this channel has taught me is most people are similar in many ways. Same concerns, worries, hopes and dreams. I always suspected it but I see it more and more on here. Thanks for the kind words. Take care. Steve
I'm a work in progress and continually figuring retirement out as I go. Doing pretty much whatever I want and happy with it so far. Thanks and take care. Steve
It ain't much just a typical suburban neighborhood but we like it. I call it my "little half acre of paradise". I spend a lot of my spare time just knocking around out there. It just can't be beat on a nice spring day like it was. Hang in there your time in the sun will come and when it does you'll love it just like I do. Take care. Steve
Thanks for stopping by. One of your recent videos gave me an eye opening and I'm planning on talking about it Friday. You mentioned "Intentional Spending" and it really hit home with me and it's been rolling around in my head ever since. Take care. Steve
@@retirementcorner Thanks Steve. Took decades of bad behavior to change our ways. We are completely intentional in everything we buy now. It’s a mind shift change from just borrowing against your future self.
Try the tractor supply store for those plow handles or possibly Northern tool. Also there are alot of rust encapsulator paint products that would work great for that plow and save you having to sand off the rust. Especially if you plan to keep it outside.
Tractor Supply was the first place I checked. The one around here didn't have any but I probably could order one from them. Just your basic rake, shovel, axe handles is all they had. The big box stores here don't have them. There are a couple small mom and pop places I'll check first. Never thought about Northern tool. I'll check them also. I've seen those paints and they seem to work well. Also found some rust remover that works really well. Between those and a little elbow grease it should do the trick. Thanks for the help. Take care. Steve
The Dreaded PT cruiser. I use mine as a spare car in case the other one is in the shop! Used cars sometimes need a little extra care…the retired life and not keeping us with Jones.
Kind of the reason I keep it around also. Used to be my sons and I drove it for a couple years between trucks. Just kind of hard to let it go. Take care. Steve
Thanks for the shout-out buddy. You were spot on about the work pressures. I didn’t have idea how constantly stressed out I was while working. I never got away from it and it affected my evenings, weekends, holidays and vacations. I’ve been retired for just over eight months now and it’s clear to me how tweaked I was. I love this stage of life and the freedom to just breathe. Good to hear from you and walk around the yard. Your truck looks like mine…I have a 2015 F-150. Take care.
When we are going through it we don't realize it. It's just normal to us. Once we retire and see things from this side we realize it. That's how it has worked for me anyway. Never thought I had any stress or pressure till I retired. I remember you mentioning "your as busy as you want to be" one time before and it's totally true. I work a little and play a little. Mix it up however I want. Perfect. Thanks and take care. 2019 Ram Tradesman( white work truck)😄 Steve
We all do what we have to till we don't. Spending your time till then figuring retirement out will pay off big time when your time comes. There are a lot of moving parts to retirement and it can be overwhelming. Steady, slow and easy with some professional help along the way and you'll get there and love every minute of it. Take care. Steve
Me either. I told her at.least she could call it a floating deck. Same thing it just sounds better. Built it to grill on and used a popup gazebo for the first couple years till we got this one. She's been looking at getting a table and chair set for it the past couple years but she just can't pull the plug on one yet. She's worse than me on spending what she calls "HER MONEY". Not ours but "HERS".😄 Take care. Steve
Totally true! I can't tell you the times one or the other has pulled my butt out of a situation. Tailpipe hanger, drain snake, blister preventer/cover, even held my steel toe in for a short time. Take care. Steve
For me it's a must. I don't want to be overwhelmed with work in retirement. Need some down time just to enjoy life once in awhile. Spent too many years being wide open and busy I just wanted a little slower pace for awhile. Thanks and take care. Steve
It's an interesting thing to have and I'm looking forward to restoring it the best I can. Will be a nice ornament for the corner of my garden. Take care. Steve
Steve I wouldn't put to high a hopes on that plow. That is a bigger one and I don't think you going to get the wife to pull it. Also you should have your humming bird feeders up on your skinning rack by now.
Looking at getting a pair of metal spiked cleats that should help her get some traction.🤣 Seriously I couldn't imagine working the back end of it much less trying to pull the thing. Ain't allowed to have a mule in my neighborhood so it will just set in a corner of my garden. We have a humming bird feeder up closer to the kitchen window for my wife. I had to take it down to replace a trim board. Got that done and now it can be put back. Take care. Steve
Pretty much. I've used bailing wire for fence repair, tailpipe hangers, even wired a radiator tight in an old truck I had. Just no end to the uses. Those old wire coat hangers are great for cleaning the hair out of the tub drain. Take care. Steve
I hear you Dennis. Hope all is going well. I saw your recent post with the infusion. Stay busy but the down time is important also. Got to stop and smell the roses even in retirement. Take care. Steve
Believe it or not it's on my list. Not cornhole but a horse shoe pit. Always enjoyed it when I was younger but never very good at it. Spent some time this past winter getting the measurements and pit size down. Back behind the garden area is a nice flat spot and shaded. I'll get to it just when I don't know. Thanks for the help. Take care. Steve

Same here Ray. I stopped working the week before Christmas in 2023 and have really enjoyed “just” not working for the first time in over 40 years.

We had 4 min of Totality here & saw the sun flares. Pretty cool!
Cool! We had a total down here a few years ago but I didn't see the sun flares. Only about 85% here but still pretty neat. Take care. Steve
