Word of Honor is the Cinderella story of the year. Tiny budget, low expectations, expected to be waaaay in the shadow of Immortality. Their only sponsor was a freaking NUT company. And then . . . lightning struck. Word of mouth spread about this thing like wildfire, and they had an international smash on their hands. (Every Untamed blog I follow on Tumblr suddenly converted into a Word of Honor blog - including my own.) When Immortality was delayed AGAIN, WOH had the historical BL drama stage all to itself and seized its moment. Suddenly, the two leads went from hawking nuts to appearing in glamorous makeup ads and on magazine covers. It was a minor miracle. It’s true that all the fates won’t line up like this again - even for other dramas with these two - but it’s been remarkable to watch.

After The Untamed finished airing, I promised myself that I won’t get this invested in a drama again, because I just felt so sad and empty. Yet here I am after finishing Word of Honor yesterday (yes, I took the slow route) and I’m feeling the same. I don’t know what am I going to do now.
Kudos to the whole crew for bringing us the magic they did in the conditions they had. The love they had for the drama definitely showed and made all the difference. I will leave a piece of my heart on that snowy mountain forever.

To me, the drama is so good that I honestly am not aware it’s a cheap production. Probably because the majestic costumes and the effort of the whole team. Decided to watch this on a whim. Never have I thought two months later I am still stuck in the mountain. This drama was such a wonderful surprise. I agree wholeheartedly with your review. It's far from perfect drama especially its last stretch in terms of plot (may never forgive that fucked up fake death lie), but I still love the drama and its cast from the main to the supporting roles. All of them pulled their weight, especially the chemistry between then 5 main leads. So thank you WOH for coming to my life. I lost my sleep because of you, but most of the time I didnt regret it.

This was my first BL drama that I fell in love with. I came in without knowing anything about the story, characters or the novel. A gif of WKX got me interested and I thought of just checking it out for fun. By the end of the first episode, I got intrigued. By the second episode, I got hooked. Now I’m in love with the drama and the CP. I’ve been losing sleep over it since I’ve started watching it last month. I’ve never ever stayed up for a premier before for any drama in my life before this one. I’m pretty sure I’ll be stuck on the mountains for a long, long while.
I believe the universe works in mysterious ways, especially for this drama. Against all the odds and low expectations, this drama ended up winning over a lot of people’s hearts. I guess sometimes great things happened when you least expected it. I just thankful for all the cast and crew for putting all their love into this despite the low budget that they had and knowing that it’s likely could be a flop. I totally agree that our main leads are the most important part of the success, but if the secondary casts didn’t do a good job either, this drama wouldn’t have been a hit like it is now. They all acted well and have great chemistry together. Everyone was very suited for their roles. I can’t ask for a better cast than this. And all the bts clips make me love them even more, especially GJ and ZZH. Thank the lord these two got the main roles because I can’t see anybody else but them as WKX and ZZS.
2 gold mines is pretty right for this drama. It was not perfect especially toward the last couple of episodes regarding the plot and editing. It pains me that this drama could’ve been even better than now if they were to have a bigger budget. Despite this, I still loved that they spent on what’s matter the most. The fighting, costumes, hairstyles, makeup, sets to name a few were very well done. I also loved how well the love story of the CP was portrayed in here. I was so captivated with their love and their chemistry. It’s one of the most heartfelt, beautiful love story I’ve ever seen on screen. And their lovely family of five/six. I’m just so happy that I came across this drama. It brought lots of happiness into my boring life. The only thing that would’ve make it better if I have someone in my life to share the excitement with. It’s okay, I can always go online for that 😆
Thank you for this great final review and all the WOH contents that you have shared and going to share. You have helped make this WOH’s fan very happy, so I thank you so much for that. 🤗

This is my first BL drama as well as my first Chinese drama. I agree that this would have been wonderful to share with someone - but being single as well - we can go back to the mountain at anytime. I just found the series on Netflix and spent 3 days binge watching (so I’m going to watch the series over again - probably a few more time LOL) On that note, pretty upset with how the ‘ending’ of episode 36. Found out that there are 7 minutes fir an episode 37 - but I can’t find to be able to watch just it with English subtitles and no one reviewing it. Don’t get me wrong - I have loved what you have put up, just trying to find a clean copy I guess.
But I agree that the chemistry on the screen was incredible! Including that of the supporting cast! The Scorpion King is a badass! His eyes…..and how he could just look at you with that sliding stare he has - would not want him ticked at me lol. But not just the actors - the crew, the makeup artists, the costumers, directors - they all need a shout out as you could tell from the clips you watch that everyone loved working on this show.

While the pacing in the last set of episodes was super rushed, the script didn't go off the rail. I do feel the scriptwriter doesn't get the credit she deserves for this adaption. She fleshed out the wuxia plots more and added the shixiong/shidi twist that gave the drama a better balance between wuxia and BL than the novel itself, which I think helped give the show more mainstream appeal.

That's really a poor production. 45 episodes cut into 36😭Also thanks for nuts company, I don't mind they eat more nut in the drama😄Remember In episode 14, WKX felt painful and lost when he knew Axu will die soon and crying in the rain, the production prefer waiting for rainy day to filming instead of artificial rain due to tight budget. And also episode 14,GJ was so deep into WKX that made him can't stop crying after finish filming even the director informed and comforted him. That's why he portray pretty good. Even under such hard conditions for filming(very very hot weather but wear costume with much layers) , all the crew have no complain as they all know it's a masterpiece they can so lucky involved.
Thanks and glad for dig deep to WOH. That's a brilliant and wonderful drama I love soooo much and also love hard working , sunshine and cute boy GJ and ZZH. Hope they have prospective future

What I love from this series is that the character show a joyful love from the beginning. the viewers know that they are set to be boyfriends and they express this in the many creatively ways is possible under the Chinese censorship. They laughed their head off to each other, they embrace, holds hands, caress each other hair, and take their top off without much protocol. What a rewarding viewing experience for the public in the context of Chinese dramas. I understand why the series has became more popular than the Untamed. WWX and LWJ would be forever my iconic couple, played magically by the exquisite beauties that are ZX and WY but leave us with an unhealthy Yizhan longing, and the fact that they separated in the end, different from the novel is a anticlimax. In WOH they held each other until the end and became one loving energy, I loved it so beautiful to see. All the other characters are also so interesting particularly the female ones. Bring more women to BL dramas please! I was bored with all those boys running around in the Untamed. Honestly, if it is not that WWX and LWJ was such a power couple it would have been so uninteresting. We need strong multilayer females roles even in BL dramas!!

Yes there were two versions. And the last scene is wwx and lwj on the waterfall which make totally sense as it was shot as a final scene with long distance wide angle view of the waterfall. This was the ending on the script too. It said the Chinese version was changed for fear to the censorship.

@@anaverne3147I agree. WoH's WenZhou had that wholesome, mature, deeply emotional love that isn't as prominent in other BL. Even when comparing Untamed's Wangxian who do portray that devotion but it was very subtle ( WangXian's love in MDZS, the novel, was so lusty, which made it seem less mature and more like teenage/ young love). And WoH definitely has better written/well-rounded female characters and there are more so there is more of an equal dispersion of males vs females. Untamed is filled with mostly guys lol

Their happiness vibes spread to us, bcs of them everyone laugh much more, smile much more.
Others cast also incredible ppl, they are shinning tgt with ML, even for small chrct like gosts under WKX also so good involved.
Yup, setting, CGI, property so poor. Once in scene WKX order food in hostel for ZZS and said he order delicious food but on screen the food so cheap only vegetables and chicken, so poor.
Everyone say thx for Wulong Nut. Ppl said: only Wulong who trust to them, so we also trust to you, everyone bought it to thx😊.

The same for me (i have 4 other titles longer than you, though but nif s1 is still my most beloved). I lost count of how many times i have binge watching all episodes of nif s1. The funny thing is when i first saw the opening of woh and saw zzh face i felt like it's a face i'm quite familiar with but couldn't recall from which movie i knew him. As i continued watching, it kept bugging me, so i took a look at the actor's name (yes, forgive me for being uncultured at that time, not knowing who zzh is) and found out i knew his face from the drama i have watched so many times. I'm so happy that he (and other actors involved in this production) is recognized more after woh. I hope all the actors and all who were involved in woh gain more success in their career

I think the most fun about this drama is the digging part. Like you just not watch the drama as a drama, but you need to be a little bit like detective, searching extra point, meaning behind the script and that is fun. It's like a 2 way communication. And I'm proud with this drama. Nobody is expecting this drama hits like this. At the beginning, not planning to watch this drama but I was bored and watch the first 3 episode. then ppl talk about in Youku episode is much advance, with english sub and I keep telling myself, it's ok, I don't understand Chinese so it's hard to navigate in Youku and subscribe, I'm okay waiting for YT release, only to craved week after that, bc I need to watch everything and I don't know, it's take me until 3am to finish subscribe, navigate bla bla bla, you know it's super hard when you don't understand what you do, but in the end, no regret. It's a crazy journey but I'm glad I'm a part of it..

I stumbled upon 'Word of Honor' when it popped up on Netflix with the WKX thumbnail. I love me a pretty boy with a fan as his weapon so I clicked away. At first, I wasn't quite sold on it, I figured it would fill a few hours and if I liked it enough I would continue. I had no idea what it was about and totally expected it to be a straight up wuxia drama since the other Netflix thumbnail I keep seeing is one with Beauty Ghost. I went from thinking, this seems to be a BL, to this really seems to be a BL to, yep, this is a BL. But here's the thing that got me, it is just a fairly well done wuxia romance with societal analysis (who is good vs bad and who assigns these labels). I love morally grey characters and WKX and ZZS are exactly that. I have to admit it was Gu Xiang's character initially kept me interested - I wanted to know who this beautiful on the outside but completely awkward and almost inhuman on the inside character came to be. I have been rewatching the show a second time to pay more attention to some of the minor characters but also noticed how GX can't human very well at the beginning which is why she's so - odd - and that WKX hides behind poetry and flattery to compensate for his also immature humanity. GX character development only really works with her being so off in the beginning that she realizes how to interact with others through meeting more normal people.
All of the extra content from the lovely AvenueX has helped to feed my meta mind which only allowed me to appreciate this more. As someone with only a small understanding of the CDrama ecosystem, I noticed that despite being a dirt poor production they made a lot of wise editorial decisions. Their costume designer nailed it so well and the make up/hair team did a good job to compliment that. For me that really helped keep me engaged in the characters and I could overlook the lack of sets and physical resources. I think by having a limited set, they leveraged it very well for important plot points, saving money but also moving the story forward - this really worked with the power transfer from Cao Gong to Zhao Jing as you saw how they were in the same location but at a different point in their role in the story. The monologues in the secret room with all of the ancestral tablets is a perfect example of this being leveraged so well.
I also liked that they kept the CG simple for the most part - having the animated flowing energy allowed them to convey the martial arts powers and not come off as cheesy like the mop monster of 'the untamed' (ah the untamed, I tried to watch you but couldn't with so many issues it kept pulling me out of the story - it also didn't help that I really didn't like the type of character our main leads are). For the most part the framing of shots, camera angles and lighting worked well - who ever was behind that knew how to set things up to convey their points. I especially loved the camera work for the ghost scenes, instead of going over the top to depict how warped and wicked these characters are, they used the off kilter camera angles to emphasize WKX's madness making him difficult to read by his subordinates and his own fickle nature he's trying to deal with. So, you don't have enough money to make things seem super 'evil' - just give the viewer a distorted angle and they will feel that instability for a very low cost. I also think b/c they used the same sets so frequently, the staff leaned them well and allowed them to to a much better job with their limited resources.
I did not like the rushed pacing at the end, but it is a common issue with so many shows, so I'm not too upset about that. I went back to read the original novel and honestly, the pacing in that is also a bit of a shitshow - so the drama smoothed out a fair bit of that aspect. I found WKX to a much better character in the drama as opposed to the novel where he relies on over used BL tropes that were outdated even when I first read media like this in the 90s. I am thankful that the drama rounded WKX and ZZS out to be more realistic and less stiff characters an issue that really dragged ZZS's character in the novel. By time we really learn about ZZS's character in the novel it was too late in the novel and he felt retconned/ooc at times. The drama def really sorted this out much better.
This show for the most part delivers as it for the majority of the time knows that it is a romantic wuxia drama about the trials that two main leads must overcome to gain a slice of happiness that neither of them is sure that they deserve. The core cast clearly had a good working relationship and knew how to play off of each other and many of the older and supporting roles delivered keeping us in the environment. ZZH and GJ went into the project not intending to just blow it off and it shows with their acting (not perfect, but not slacking at all). Now, on my second watch through I can identify so many parts of the show where my subconscious was telling me something was important the first time is noticeable on the second viewing and you can tell they really trusted each other and were comfortable with being intimate with each other. I really commend the actor who played ZJ's character, he made me hate him sooooo much that I was like like 'yeah, you deserve to suffer you horrible person!' I really feel now that I know so much more about this production I can really appreciate it. If only Netflix had the final short episode 37, because damn I was totally confused at the end of 36. It literally ended and I was like "what? eh?".

It's my first time watching this vid and visiting this channel. Now, I'm looking forward for more vid contents. I love the conciseness of review. 🤙🏻 But I'll miss the WOH anyway. That's it. 😂

Thanks for closing WOH with this review. Hopefully it won’t be your last video about WOH though😊

I have nothing but overwhelming love for the Shan HeLing drama and it's entire crew.. so I'm really thankful that you got into it too. cuz it's always nicer when I can watch you talk about my favourite dramas

I liked Word of Honor so much that I bought dvds. Then China boycotted Zhang Zhehan for attending a wedding at Japanese shrine. That was the craziest situation I had never heard, so absurd. I like Gong Jun and Word of Honor was his best role. He needs to improve his acting skills. Zhang Zhehan is a good actor. I listened to his new songs, they were good. I will always root for him. I hope he gets his day in court and get justice.

I'm so very happy and thankful for AvenueX for being kind of my outlet for all the love I have for Word of Honor! I have literally 2 real life friends who I watch BL with and unfortunately they have not dipped their feet yet on C-drama (I mean soulmates and all have me sooooo hooked! I'll exchange 1 WenZhou slight hug scene for a Thai BL bed scene any day) So I'm so happy when I see channels on YT that express the same love I have huhuhu.
And now I don't know how long I'll have separation anxiety with this, cuz honestly WoH is the only reason I moved on from The Untamed....

Hey!! I'm from Chile, and I just finished the last episode (36) on Netflix, it's my first series watched of this kind and I loved it!!! Really loved everything about it, and the actors leading it are amazing!!! So sad for me that I cannot acces to the extra stuff so I don't know what happen next!! Maybe some day I'll be lucky and watch it. Thanks for this review!! Love from Chile! 😍

Hi there. Here is the link to the special episode which shows the real ending for our leads. Someone was nice enough to provide the episode for free. You can go there and access it. mydramalist.com/discussions/tian-ya-ke/61943-ep-37-important-ending-scene-links?pid=1722147&page=1#p1722147

I also thought the Scorpion king plot added a depth to this drama that we don't see often. I loved the back stories of the ghosts, demons, and immortals
