Varanasi is one of the holiest cities in Hinduism and is considered one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. For Hindus, Varanasi is the city of Lord Shiva and is regarded as an important gateway to liberation (Moksha). It is believed that if one dies here and is cremated, their soul will be freed from the cycle of reincarnation and ascend directly to heaven.
The Ganges River in Varanasi is considered the holiest river by Hindus. Many people travel from far away just to bathe in the Ganges, to wash away their sins, or to scatter the ashes of their ancestors, believing that this ensures the peace of the departed souls.
The cremation grounds in Varanasi operate 24/7, symbolizing the endless cycle of life and death. However, there are certain groups of people who are considered unsuitable for cremation, such as pregnant women, those who have died from a snakebite, children, ascetics in the midst of their spiritual practices, and those suffering from leprosy. Their bodies are typically thrown directly into the Ganges, with a different method of sending them off from life.
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is also the spiritual heart of Varanasi, and many people visit this temple to pray for the deceased before performing the cremation rituals.
Varanasi's unique culture and religious atmosphere, which combine a deep understanding of life and death, make it a sacred place that countless Hindus must visit in their lifetime, while also attracting tourists from around the world to explore.
