      @@gemma375 I would be fired if I wired like that. My company demands professionalism. I had all the wires properly organized, but I had wire ties spaced a bit unevenly (by fractions of an inch). I was yelled at for not making it look perfect. Didn’t have to move any wires, but I had to cut a few wire ties and put new ones on. Craftsmanship no matter what.

      No kidding Daniele. When you wind up needing that many power outlets it's time to ditch those janky strips for a real solution. Go to the nearest hardware store that sells electrical supplies. Get a bench strip that is as long as the rack is tall. Mount that on the back of the rack, it's ok to use tape as long as it's strong tape that can hold some weight (like duck tape). Also get a box of single outlet receptacles and a small spool of 110V household wire. On the back of each receptacle are two sets of holes with teeth in them, all you have to do to expand the strip is strip back wire about half an inch and push it in, do a tug test to make sure the teeth bit down.
      Ethernet wire however drives me mad. If you try to organize it, you have to stick with it and use velcro straps or something else that can be pulled apart and stuck back together repeatedly. Personally I use garbage ties since they area readily available everywhere and easy to disassemble and reassemble. Just don't forget you do need to let the cable air cool, your pushing a lot of data through it so sticking it through a plastic tube is a recipe for ethernet cords burning out at random times when you really need them to work.

      Agreed about the UTP cables Alan, that really bothered me when I took the first glance at this video. It only got worse after he mentioned that the documentation on it was lost due to a failure to archive something on paper properly. I've seen a few messy server in my time and some were a bigger mess with cables in the room but usually there was at least basic documentation on what was originally planned and then not updated, here it seems even the original plan was lost.
      Just deciding on a colour coding scheme defining them by cable going from switch to x device makes it already a lot easier to trace what is what. The next basic requirement would be making a proper plan, documenting it and keeping it up to date as changes are made to the configuration. Beyond that proper cable management in some way is desirable.
      And the electrical mess, well damn that was all kinds of wrong. All tangled, wrong way to wire it up, substandard equipment quality. When dealing with server gear of that value its a terrible idea to not spend at least some money and time on getting the wiring halfway up to a functional level and preferably follow your local electrical code requirements.
      In European electrical norms these would be some gross violations that could end up being a major problem especially if something go wrong. I'm sure there's no way that "design and plan" would pass the regulations that are in place there. What if a fire happens and it started in the server room? Will insurance be paid out? What if a short in there takes out some of the server gear, if its covered under insurance/warranty I bet it'll lead to the same issues.

    This is a very small reminder of a project I once did: re-organize the patching between patch panels and switching racks in a fairly small computerroom. Had to upgrade the switching gear, too, replacing ‘monolytic’ switches with modular ones.
    Some cable salad was 50 cm thick and occupied all the space below the false floor.
    We did it in 3 changes (ITIL) and replaced exactly 20 km of patch cables. It was high profile and risk, but good fun.
    Conclusion: it pays off to have a good and strickt methodology with *everything* in your conputer room. It really does, all the time.

    You commented briefly about reliability problems with long USB cables. We had this problem at work and it turned out to be USB cables that did not meet the specification, specifically the cable shield (screen) not being connected properly at both ends. Slightly less budget cables from the same supplier turned out to be correctly made and hence more reliable.

    In our server/comms room at a large data center, we mounted 110 blocks on backboard, permanant cabling from servers, switches, and routers as well as work stations, then use cat5 or cat 6 cross connect wire. Much more flexible than patch panels. Never touch the perm wiring, all done at backboard.

      I dont get why if these companies send Linus all this free shit in the first place, Why dont they send people out to Install the enterprise grade stuff so that Linus can spend less time worrying about and then ignoring key wiring problems and actually increase the productivity of the company and use the servers and computers for what there actually for.

    • @JaffacafeChannel
      @JaffacafeChannel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's actually quite simple. First off; the free articles are not too expensive to give away, and with Linus showing them off, people will probably buy more enterprise grade stuff because it works better. Just one or two people have to do that and the company is back in black numbers. Sending a technician would increase that cost significantly, as they would charge travel fees, hourly wages et cetera. Secondly; Linus can now do two videos instead of one. He can do a review on the stuff and on the building process. This is actually a miniseries, resulting in more videos, resulting in more people seeing the videos, resulting in more revenue. And that is of course what Linus is after.

    @brandonfrancey5592 7 ปีที่แล้ว +163

    Basically Linus doesn't do anything anymore unless it's sponsored and there is no future planing because it's all done when it turns into a problem. That pretty much describes how the server room turned into the disaster that it is.
    We need power bars, is there a company that will send us $500 power bars for free while we do a review on them? No, okay then, to the dollar store.

    • @robbhus
      @robbhus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      There's no reason to buy more expensive power bars, power bars are simple in construction regardless, and they already have surge protection through their UPS, so powerbars work just fine, biggest difference between cheapo power bars and industrial ones is just mounting solutions.

    • @Likeomgitznich
      @Likeomgitznich 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robb hus to clarity, because the world is full of idiots, this person is saying expensive power bars with great surge protectors aren't really necessary because they have the an expensive enterprise UPS conditioning the power supplied to those strips. If you are plugging directly into the wall you still need a decent power strip with surge protection. If you are plugging into a consumer UPS I would still recommend a power strip with a decent surge protector but that is a just in case.

    -It looks like when I was a young man starting out in IT ... LOL
    -I worked in the IT of the largest control tower in the southern hemisphere, and with tiny teams we organized the Data Center much more and there could not stop everything to organize, oh easy, because without being able to stop everything from more work.
    -1º -Take a big holiday or weekend when no one is working, turn everything off and disassemble everything from the hack including cabling (identify with everything that is not changed with tags) and electrical part.
    -2º -Clean everything that goes in the hack and himself as well as the room.
    -3rd redo organized and within the norms of structured cabling using all the tools you can to organize (channels, adapters and cable guides), or even homemade solutions such as tapes, Velcro, etc ...
    -4º Assemble the electrical part, with the wires and everything in the right places and properly fixed.
    -5th Place the equipment in the rack in the correct positions.
    -6º Reconnect the electrical network cables and etc. in the equipment and check everything.
    -7º Reconnect everything and test.
    -Tip to fix without killing by nailing things on the wall:
    -Double-sided tape, double-sided Velcro (certainly loosens easier than nails).
    -In 3 of these racks that I set up to relocate my equipment and servers from 4 different rooms into the Datacenter, it was a week working alone but I did, 15 servers in
    many different.
    -That's why at that time I was an electronics and automation technician without formal IT training.
    -Now after CCNA and JNCIA I am even more methodical.

    Before retiring I worked for USPS as a technician in an area with 4 large flat sorting machines (125ft long, 24ft wide and 16ft high. At the front of each machine was a wack with 7ea dual zeon processor rack mounted image servers. Each server had a bank of whiney fans trying to blast air so they wouldn't melt, Xeon cpu's generated a lot of heat back in 2006 and stuffing it all into a 1U case did not help. There were doors front and back that did a great job of turning the cabinets into ovens. their was a bank of high speed fans at the base of these cabinets that were supposed to move enough air to keep everything happy but it wasn't nearly enough air.
    When i came on shift at 1430 I'd go around and check each machine and I'd open the front and back doors about 3" to help the air escape and that lowered the internal temperature of the computers significantly . The problem is the day crew's boss had a bug up his ass about keeping the doors shut and locked lest nefarious workers tamper with the computers. I tried to explain the problem to him but he said no way. He said those cabinets don't get at all hot and I told him that was because the first thing your guys do is shut every thing down so they can do daily PM on the machines and didn't fire them back up til about a half hour before my shift started (we actively ran mail form about 1500 to 0600 the next morning). Machines that are off do mot generate heat - he just looked at me and blinked. BTW our back server room which had dozens of racks filled with computers and two high capacity AC cabinets the doors on the servers were all missing and I don't they were ever there.
    Being a practical guy I found out where they hid the keys to all the doors (all keyed alike) and I threw them all out except for the one on my key chain - he went absolutely ballistic but could never prove it was me. he then wanted to mechanically seal the cases which would make working on the computers VERY hard. I solved that by taking the doors off and hiding them in the basement, he vowed to find the guy who did this and fire him,
    Two years later when I retired the doors were still where I hid them, the computers were happy, and that boss had been moved to a job where he couldn't do as much damage. The PO had some great people working on the floor, they cared deeply about the mail and recognized how important it was to get millions of peices of mail through the machines and out on their way. Some of the managers were just unbelievably dense and their actions could and did delay mail movement.

However, it's really annoying to those of us who don't or simply can't pay to get those videos earlier and we have to wait random unpredictable amounts of time until one day they might show up in our sub boxes. I get the whole idea of supporting LTT and getting benefits like watching videos early but, it's really annoying to those of us who don't or simply can't pay to get those videos earlier and we have to wait random unpredictable amounts of time until one day they might show up in our sub boxes. Not trying to sound like a cry baby but, a company of this size should have scheduling ALMOST perfected and not completely neglected.

    the jank is truly impressive. my home server setup (when it gets done) will be a mix of my old desktops and anything that can be run on a pi - the difference between this and lmg's old setup as shown in this vid is the price of the components

    If you watched the video released 2 days ago about Linus's watercooled server, you will notice you get a short peek at the finished server room (or near finished server room since we all know Linus likes to keep upgrading). But I am glad we finally get to see the work put in behind it.

    i love me some good cable management. i work at a data center and nothing makes me happier than seeing a clean dc. its a nightmare when you have to trace cables and fix the excess with active servers everywhere

  • @legoboy-ox2kx
    @legoboy-ox2kx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The datacenter I work for has all their cables labeled, so we have the rack, switch or PDU, and port numbers on every power cable and Ethernet cable, then route everything in bundles along the side of the rack.

    Why don't you guys take advantage of the height of the server room, you can run wires through to the top if done properly, and it will keep wires off the floor. You can also mount UPS's through the walls as well, and just use the racks for other things. This will conserve space.

      I didn't realize they were Canadian until after I moved to Canada from the states and started recognizing all the locations in their videos. Turns out I pass by their office every day.
      Also, it was balls cold here last winter. (At least for Vancouver.)
