I love a modern classic, and I'd love a CX650, they're so cool! I have a '92 VF750 and ride it every day. It's done nearly 44k miles and it's still as solid and reliable as the day it left the factory! Doesn't hang about either ;-)

Its soooo easy to ride faster than the skills can cope with.

I feel that if you parked a bike like that in front of a cafe in the U.S., no one would bat an eye, which is really unfortunate. I might be wrong, but we really are too crazy about new cars and bikes here to appreciate some awesome stuff in the past. Really awesome bike!

My dad's got the CX500 1981 model. Spent two years doing it up. Obviously not as fast as the 650 turbo but still a good bike. He brought it because he hadn't had a bike for 14-15 years and wanted to get back into biking, CX500 was a bike he had owned before well his brother owned one and so he already knew what it was like etc plus it's driveshaft so no chain maintenance lol. My uncle (my dad's brother) managed to get hold of his CX500 he had 15 odd years ago and restored it too around the same time my dad got his CX500.
Great bike you've got there. Nice to see old bikes still in action on roads today.

Hey Russ, this video is rather special to me, since right now, I'm out of work, scrounging for money, a lawsuit against me, mortgage company issues, home owner's association issues, and the world seems dark and dreary. This video just brightened my day when you talked about scrounging for pennies to eat.
I'm glad you've come through all of this to be in the place where you are now, and I wish you continued success.

Yes, we all need to be appreciative of the lives we have. sometimes I long for those times I scrounged the furniture for change. They were simpler times and they had their share of fun, didn't they? In a similar place in life (if not geography!) I have the luxury of picking which bike to ride or add to the collection. But it's not things that make us happy. We must remember that it is the people and experience we have that makes us wealthy. Live and play every day. Life is short.

Agreed with moonfleet, nice to see you back. I used to own a 1981 CX500 which I used for courier work, only let me down twice, both times due to the water pump bearing. !st time, bought a 2nd hand engine, 2nd time, gave up and sold it for spares. Cracking motors though, I agree.

What a cool bike. Was great to see the lag and spin up to boost. I've read about it for years, but never got to 'see' it. The turbo era was when I first got licensed so I remember the bikes well, I just never had any of them.
I do think the theme to Miami Vice would fit this video nicely.

Nice to see you doing a ride for you. Love the forward observation lesson, Volvo, Landrover, Vauxhall and the Ford. I taught my daughters to drive and i used to say at the start of each lesson "observation and anticipation" then set off. As a test of observation i used to say "without looking in the mirror, what's behind you" and generally they could quote three or four car colours if not makes. I think that's not bad for young drivers observational skills. Ride Safe.

Thank you for the personal vlog russ. Seen so many of your videos Ive come to really like your talking style ( its an instructor style admittedly) and always have very thought out personal opinions, thought out over many years. As novice riders we look to people like you to be our guides and our mentors. People like you that are experienced and willing to put your views out there, so that people may learn from you, lest they learn under more life threatening circumstances. Finally went on a ride through the hills of Western Australia recently, it was so scenic, like something out of an advert, the whole way to the end reaching the next highway, incredible. Would love to come back to England one day, buy a bike and do the same.

Completely off topic from the video, but I owe you a thanks. I passed direct access about 2 weeks ago now, on my first go, about a week before my theory was due to run out. And although most of that is down to my instructor and 2 years practice on a 125, I also learned a great deal of useful information from your videos. So thanks!

LOL- what a great video in an assortment of ways...Firstly I was watching you ride, thinking that, even when you're having fun, I can watch and learn... then you reveal your sordid past as a hoon, LOL!! But what you are saying is so very true, and most of it is why I never rode young - for the exact same reason I would smoke a little pot but not get into heavy drugs... I knew I would come to grief.
Running out of talent... so well put, I think any bike, no matter what size, is capable of exceeding anyone's talent if ridden too hard at the wrong time and place.

This is such a lovely calm ride. Well done Russ! It's a simple ride by a master - great positioning, no drama, total control. It shows what total control of the bike looks like, and it's at once calming and also shows why being a biker is such a passion.

While I loved my Yamaha Zeal 250cc (1st bike), having moved through a few bikes to get to my current Ducati Multistrada - its the Ducati that does it for me. I must say though aesthetically speaking, the older bikes like your CX are just brilliant. If they reissued one with ABS and TC I would not hesitate. I liked this personal Vlog too - nice to get to know you after having watched all the bike related vids all this time! All the best from Australia and thanks for putting these up - I always enjoy them. Cheers mate

I've had old bikes I'd had to work on and modern bikes that have had warranty with rock solid reliability - that you'd probably need a laptop to work on anyway which I don't have the skills for. I have to say I'd gladly go back to the bikes of the late 80's and 90's and stay there. Love there sound, smell and road feel - Something raw about them, just mechanical and nothing more. One day I'll get a bike again and hopefully it might be an original fireblade.

Lovely vid Russ - I nearly missed it for some reason. I love those warm evenings where you've nothing better to do than pick a bike and go for a local run, you are indeed a lucky man having all that scenery on your doorstep. Matlock B looked lovely, so much better than when I went and couldn't find a spot to park as it was so heaving with bikes! ...shame 'cos the fish and chip shops looked brill. Well here's your reply to my earlier question. I'm jealous bro. Not had a bike for years now. Made an abortive attempt at low Earth orbit on a CB250 G5 in 1979 - with an old shape Rover 3.5 providing the launch prod. Still paying for it! I like turbos, but the first one I had was a Saab 900T. Another inspiring vid. Cheers.

  • @Alan-xy2vb
    @Alan-xy2vb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

This reminds me of the CX500 Turbo we used to own in the early 90's. It was my first decent bike and more than good enough for two when touring. We did the coastal route from Adelaide to Sydney ((via Melbourne) Australia) and cross country back to Adelaide (about 3800km) on one trip. I often wonder if the CX series was the forerunner of the Pan/ST1100 which ('99 1100A) I now own.

Thank you for posting this video. My Wife and I went to England in the spring of 2008, and I have truly enjoyed seeing the countryside again. I am in Georgia, in the U.S., so it's a completely different riding experience here. I had a 1977 Honda 750K in my twenties, and I sold it before I got married. Now, at nearly 42, with a wife and family, I wish a had that bike again. I hope to get back into riding soon. We would like to return to England as well. I will visit your shop when I return one day. The city of Bath is a far north as we went in England. Nottingham looks beautiful.

Also what a cracking bike, much derided when I where a lad, (plastic maggot and all that). But they seem to be quite sought after these days probably because they are very different to the norm. It's a turbo innit bruv! Sorry, I was just thinking what your average chav would think of the turbo on the exhaust. Lovely bike.

Abt 8pm and its still so bright?? Amazing! Where i come from that would look more like an after 6pm sight. 8 pm would be total darkness. Is it summer time perhaps where days are longer? Btw the sights in the video are beautiful!

Ellis01234567890 yeah can't really afford to go straight to DSA so gonna save for a year or two!

+Andrew Watson Best way mate. I had previous experience on bikes growing up. Owned a few on and off and riding mates bikes. But I owned a cg125 for about a year before going for my license. You learn a lot about riding when you have got a lot of power to play and because schools don't really give you much training unless you pay a fortune for it, it's good to have that experience on the road. I personally wouldn't have passed if I didn't buy a 125 first. Now I have a 52 plate SV650S. A great bike as your first "Big bike" that I would recommend.

+Ellis01234567890 there's a CBT plus scheme in Derbyshire I'm thinking of doing, should be £75 but it's funded by local council so you only pay £15 for 3 hours more on road riding. So I'm thinking of doing my CBT then going back a week or two later when I've brought my 125.

Russ correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the Bath from the Roman era ? Your right, you'd make a crap tour guide lol . Nice ride out there all the same . You sound like me , fast and furious in me youth and sedate in my later years . Letting the youngster pass me like I'm stood still these days . But can still mix it on the straights though lol . Bike looks fantastic for it's years , but with that turbo can still pick it's feet up . Good vid I needed to see this , getting complacent in my later years lol .
And , you have me saying as I go around roundabouts and passing junctions .
    WATCH WATCH WATCH lol .
    Cheers Russ .

What's Linz riding nowadays? Last i saw she had sold the Monster696 and got a CBR? Lovely bike the CX's are, a friend wants another CX500, had one in white many years ago, like riding a comfy sofa lol.

You see, I am still looking down the back of the Sofa for the odd £1 coin...Never found any because my 'State of the art' Leather sofa doesn't have any gaps...No, really it doesn't.
I'm worse off than you were FFS :-)
Still subbed mate, no vids (from me) but still subdued....

yeah a bike wont really run out of grip, road or ability (depending on tyre condition, weather, road conditions, like gravel, oil patches etc) ...but the squidgy bit sitting on it might? mainly because of ego! "I'm sure I can make it" mentality then "oops how did I get in hospital?" if you'r unlucky enough! I wont say otherwise though...understand? we all been there (no I don't mean hospital lol) ride safe....

Russ, you're one of my favourite British, next to Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford. So how does it feel to be a... to quote the classics... metal god? :D
Lovely bike, BTW, I'd keep myself away for a week or month from my Kawa just to ride one of these. Beautiful!

+NotHis RealName hahahahaha, I've done that a few times, tell the girlfriend, "I'm going to ride up and get a milkshake" and she goes "can you get me one too?", "yeah sure my love"
      Get back 2 hours later....
"Where were you?! You said you were just going to get a milkshake"
"I did, from Pie in the Sky (bike cafe in the mountains an hour from my house)"
      "Goddamnit Eliot...."

CX650 lovers - here's a link for a couple of these for sale. I've seen these personally. They're pretty machines and have been stored inside since at least 1997 when I first saw them at BSU, and I saw them at CWI a couple of weeks ago when they were getting prepped for sale. I have no vested interest, just want to be sure that anyone looking for one of these has a chance to get one.
    @t
They were donated to the VoTech program at Boise State U in the 1980's and transferred to the College of Western Idaho PowerSports program in 2009. These bikes are now titled.
