I'm not really a trail runner but an avid outdoorsman and backwater angler. I generally hike poor terrain to get to where I am going and don't generally like to switch shoes to do it. The V5's have lasted over a year of wear (generally every other day) without failures which surprised me. I generally see shoes breakdown quite a bit sooner than this. So far, these are the best shoes I have had that can go from normal everyday sneaker to semi-technical terrain with ease.
Seth, I’ve been waiting for this review to come out. You threw a curveball at us from the shoedio with this one. Hopefully the new house is treating you and the family well. QD: The stay at home parent gig, maybe TrueLove can pass on some knowledge
I must have missed these when they were released in 2020/2021? I just bought a pair at REI today. These Hierros are so plush. Thanks for the great review. They will be my run on the road until I get to the trails shoe. I will save my Brooks Cascadias for the trail/hills only.
Was not expecting this review! I just got my Hierro v5's in. They are heavy but they feel so good. Not a race shoe at all but long/easy runs on the trail will be so comfortable.
I've had mine for a month now. Agree with this review, I went with them for that heel fit my heel is a bit narrow so quite a few shoes just don't lock my heel in enough. These work fine for running I do (UK moors - mainly grass trail) but really looking for something with a bit more protection and grid on more technical trails - as you mentioned. But overall very comfortable. Great review!
I 've been using mine as a mostly road shoe and I gotta confess : I'm lovin' it! The cushion and grip are excellent. on road and light trails. Maybe thats where this shoe excels. I think New Balance kinda did "nail it"...just not for climbing moutains
As I'm getting older I would like to master and stay motivated to do more Mobility training. I'm paying the price for not doing enough right now and can't afford to mess up this close to Pikes Peak!!
Wonder how many more random shoe reviews are already pre-recorded in the old Shoedio. It's funny how obvious it is now compared to previously where i wouldn't even notice...
Just bought a pair for $70 from REI. Epic sale price so I’m excited to see if it’ll be a good part of my rotation, especially for my next backyard ultra
Sorry to be the pronunciation police but the word “hierro” is not pronounced like the English hero, it’s pronounced “he - yerro” - it means iron in Spanish. (Thanks and great review as always)
QD: I would like to master the ability to listen to my body. With that, I mean how much is too much running? Too little? What is this tweak in my leg? What caused that? Things like that. I've been running for 8 years and I still can't seem to get it right
After 3 months use: Whilst these are very comfortable, they are already leaking at both toes. I complained to New Balance given that only used for 3 months intermittently and just for walking the dog... The response was quite shocking... I received this from the Quality Care Team: "the indicated area is subject to constant bending and stretching when walking, and does so with every step, so you can imagine that after a certain amount of use the fabric loosens and may lose its water-resistant properties" The response also included a comment that this might be the "heat difference can make your feet feel wet, however, this is due to condensation because of the temperature difference, making it feel like water is entering through the mesh, when it really isn't" Plain and simple - these leak... I personally suspect it may be an isolated instance with these shoes but NB do not wish to replace(for the reasons quoted) I cannot reccomend the product and what is worse is that the customer service follow up from NB does not consider this an issue nor does it accept there may have been a manufacturing fault... I know and use Gore Tex products - for footwear...Nike, Adidas and Meindl footwear and have never encountered this issue. What a waste of £160. . By all means trust Gore Tex (I do) but I have little to no faith in New Balance competence in incorporating within their footwear - AS IT LEAKS AFTER 3 MONTHS... Which they either deny or state that constant stretching and bending means the fabric loses water proof properties - what else do you do with feet in shoes! If you're looking for waterproof footwear then would suggest Nike Pegasus Trail which has the same Gore Tex technology and these remain waterproof after over 9 months. Also Adidas Terrex and Meindl are fantastic - their customer service is great too. I mailed NB CEO and did not receive a response.
🙋 the name of this shoe (ie-rro) comes from one of the eight Canary Islands (Spain). There is a highly recommended serial Spanish TV in which you can see its landscapes ⭐
Thanks for this review. It was helpful in bringing another model and more confusion to my shopping cart :) I am looking for shoes for cold, wet days. Waterproof is a must, for dry conditions I have other shoes. 80% for casual walks with kids, 20% for running. 90% for the road, 10% for light trail. I am on a heavy side, so I need plush cushioning rather than lightweight, speedy trainers. So far I rejected: Adidas Ultraboost Winter.RDY (not really waterproof, fragile midsole) Nike Pegasus Trail 3 (slippery outsole, but so full of nice features) What seems to suit me: 1. New Balance Hierro GTX 2. Hoka Challenger GTX 3. Brooks Ghost GTX Did I miss out any good hybrid shoes? Which are the best (cushion, grip, easy fit, protection)?
One comment Seth. Do you think we could submit shoes that we have run a shorter distance in but we have worn them out as well? I am a heavier runner (215-225) and tend to run through shoes much faster than most folks. I think it would be valuable to provide that info for other runners as well.
Well, I would love to master being a father but we all know thats not possible. I’ll just keep on training. All you dads out there be the best you can, our kids deserve it.
Hi Seth, Not sure how often you get asked this or if I’ve missed it in a previous comment section. What app/software do you use to edit your videos? Thanks, Hamish
I am 100% in agreement with this one. Life has a way of knocking your legs from out under you. Literally! I did great coping with mental stress through running, pulled my Hami, now really struggling not being able to run!
Double Mondays 👊🏻 Will watch this with my morning coffee, thanks Seth as always for your unrivalled consistency and dedication
Always appreciate it Ben
New Balance killing it this year!
Just got my Rebel v2s today and im so happy! :)
Keep it up Seth

That goose slapping that 8th place ribbon on your face got me! Woke my wife up with the giggles that followed.
Had the v5 for like 400 miles and loved em. I'm on Salomon now but wouldn't hesitate to try the Hierro line again
Version 7 is out now and they added deeper lugs on the outsole to make it a better mountain trail shoe..you know for Colorado!

Like them so much I am buying another pair before the Version 7's come out this summer😁

The fresh foam cushioning is excellent. I've been using mine on the road and lovin'it

Shoedio in full effect nice vid ur the reason I started running
No wonder you and your brother are so talented, the Buena Vista Colorado area is a hot spot for all things in the extreme outdoors/exercise.
Hope you get to review the Hierro V7 ? which debuts in summer of 2022
Hey. Would love to see a La Sportiva review. They have great shoes!!! Enjoy a lot your videos. Good luck on pikes peak.
Me too, tell them to send me some shoes : )
I had the Hierro v5. Honestly worked better as a casual work shoe than a trail shoe.
I 've been using mine as a mostly road shoe and I gotta confess : I'm lovin' it!

Well this one threw me. I know you told us but Monday midnight uk time...Seth just posted a video...whhaatt???...oh yeah the review...Great stuff 😎
That shoedio is still there... New shoedio will rock.

Love your uploads always
Vibram has different compounds. The Megagrip one has amazing wet grip

Will you do Olympic marathon review?
Love the brother love in this one ❤️

i think that's for hybrid trails.. mixed on and off-road
5:32 Is it all that important to kick rocks when trail running?
Vibram must change their formula for each brand, the Mega Grip on the Arc’teryx shoes is amazing.🤷♂️🏃♂️👍
I have V5’s I really dislike the rubber flap on the heel. It kicks up rocks and debris.
thinking of trimming mine with a razor?
Notification squad
Woot woot
Just a recommendation for the next iteration of this shoe, it’s pronounced YE-ROH…It means iron in Spanish. Love your reviews BTW. 💪🏼💪🏼
QOD. Learning how to type in the computer properly. For real!

Seems like NB is trying to market this for running, hiking and just daily wear with this shoe
I think New balance "nailed it!"
QD: how to control emotions wherever running into trouble so that always calm and rational at all time

@@MrDaanram oh hope you get well soon enough and speedy recovery
QD: I would say focusing and structuring my day. Everything else comes along with this.
QD: Nordic skiing so I can work on my aerobic base for the ~5 months of winter.
QD: Running uphill without or with little walking. Onward and upward!
QD: learning online trading. So i can have a lot of time and money to run and go on adventure when ever and where ever i want 😍
I like how this shoe feels except for the thick tongue around the top of my toe joints
I would like to master numchuck skills.
First
same shoedio!?
QD: Would love to master outdoor survival and adventuring. Our modern society has strayed too far from that.
QD. Parenting! End of story
i would have loved to have mastered another language or a musical instrument.
cool sneackers but price! 135 for Ukraine is too much. especially during the war against the orcs
too much drop - too heavy - not a fan of the tail
