From the Upcoming Liquid Tension Experiment Album LTE3
Note: this is not a “Play Through” video...this is my actual tracking footage.
This album was tracked in many different ways...some moments were multiple takes ‘comped’ together...some moments were tracked days apart (after reflecting on what I had played), and sometimes I even used my original ‘scratch tracks’ from the writing demos...so that why it’s reflected in so many cuts (and multiple outfits!) 😉
I couldn’t find all of the footage from some moments/takes, so in those moments we used some of Christian Rios' Animated footage from the Official Music Video

For the record, my sole vocal on this album at the end of this song is officially referred to as a “mow” 😂
It’s been around as long as over 35 years now and could be heard as far back as on the Majesty 1985 Berklee Demos and also is at the start of every single “Making Of” Documentary Video for Radiant Records (Transatlantic, NMB, Flying Colors, etc) much like the labels MGM lion! 🦁 😎

Saw them here in Rome for the 'Metropolis Pt.2' tour, so many years ago....
Sang all the songs with friends just in front (less than 5meters probably) of Petrucci. Will never forget that gig and fun we got that day, and possibly still my absolute all time fav one as i can rememb.
I was at their shows in Rome 5 times… the last was The Progressive Nation tour, amazing show, with a gran finale… i miss it!
Those old days are back!!!!!!!!!!!!! Portnoy back where he belongs again.

Everyone knows Mike has chops. But I love his choice of color. He doesn't just "smack stuff." The tonal qualities of each splash, and the crash cymbals he chooses to ride on. All building tension and release. What a great musician!!!
I actually appreciate the fact they decided not to hide any of the editing. Many people make playthroughs that have weird ghost hits and/or other types of things than don't correlate with the audio, while the perfect honesty is that even the best of the best edit tracks from different takes. This was so much more pleasurable to watch since every hit was truly there in the audio, too.

You ever watch something, and then realize when it's all done that you're just sitting there dumb founded with your mouth agape, like WTF did i just witness? That's what it's like watching Mike Portnoy play the drums. Jeezus he is insane.
There are times during this that my brain is saying he's just hitting drums at random but my ears are saying this sounds BADASS.

Idk most of what I heard from this album (didn't listen through the whole thing yet) sounds very LTE to me, I'm quite surprised that they still have it in them. Although if it does sound like DT at times, it's definitely old DT we are talking about.
Thanks Mike, it's great how music can remember emotions felt over twenty years ago. Can't wait to receive the album.

I am a huge fan of LTE , since the first one was released . Loved LTE3 . I gotta say that the highlight of the LT3 to me is Jordan R , the guy sounds really fantastic imo . No disrespect to the rest of the band . I hope they bring these elements to DT with MP, hoping for a more musical phase of DT . And also hoping they would highlight JM bass more, like in the old days pre I&W .

@@Tuggerdrums Not *necessarily*. But it's no secret he does multiple takes and then comps the sections he liked most from each take into a single drum track (ergo, drum cam) as he tends to play parts differently on each take.

Mike, what's the pattern you do at the end of the intro run starting from the floor tom? It seems like two quads (RLKK) on the floor tom with a six (RLRLKK), then quad, six, quad, six, quad six up the toms until the five-count 64ths blasts back down. Slowing down the vid doesn't seem to help much, and I'm intrigued about the pattern. By the way, fun fact, we were at Berklee the same time back in '85 -'86. I remember watching Spinal Tap for the first time in the meal hall and my first live Rush concert ( think it was the Power Windows tour), getting on the bus to go to the venue. The jam sessions in the Ensemble rooms were amazing. Long time ago...
Even being a expert and experienced drummer as MP, we never will know how long he spend time repeating again and again all these notes to give us tese songs. That’s awesome!
