    You're so right about the 450cc-500cc zone being the unicorn area. I want a CRF450L. Maybe next year's KTM 390 will be the elusive horned equine.

      I agree, but KTM is way too wxpensive here in brazil, also if you break down or need assistance, you will have a hard time finding parts or a mechanic that have worked with the brand

      herostratics, I was rooting for Honda to win the 2017 Dakar this year, because there's a rumor going around that Honda would consider a CRF 450 L Rally with a good publicity derived from a Dakar win. Unfortunately, they were caught red handed refueling in a controlled area, and lost any chance to get the win. That 250 L Rally is more urban than adventurous. The engine cannot cope with the job. No Honda being Honda, that 450 may never see the light of the day.

    Great job Man, really appreciated you logical and concise considerations regarding all these offerings. You give a good overview with facts to the fore, and conjecture at a minimum but enough to provide context for the info.

  • @rsquilla2002

    As always my friend you do a fantastic job. I always enjoy your well researched and informative videos.i agree with you that 2017 will be an improvement from current year offers. I myself would be interested in you getting your hands on the 2017 CRF 250 l to see if the improvements get it close enough to the WR 250 R. While KTM Seems to be doing the right thing all the others appear to be making heavy FOR there displacement road bikes that are dressed in ADV CLOTHING. I however get it because how many new riders are going to do anything more difficult than a gravel road. With that said the new Kawasaki and BMW 310 will be huge hits. I personally like the idea of a dual sport that can lean in the ADV direction. So I am hopeful that the new CRFL is close to the current WR in performance Or maybe Yamaha pulls a fast one and does a mid year refresh with better adjustment to the suspension,bigger fuel tank,lighten it up a touch and ad abs(wishful thinking) or wait for 2018
    Keep up the good work. Another thought would be , is it possible for you to review jackets I like the KLIM badlands because it offers the ultimate in safety and function but is unaffordable for most to one that comes really close in safety / function and or compare /review the new helmets that have the torsion liner that. Is supposed to reduce brain related injury when compared to current helmet offerings
    You asked for a few ideas I hope these are helpful. Happy holidays to you and a safe new year
    Thanks again
    Rich

      +Ruth Squillace Thanks for the ideas Rich! Yer not so much for the serious off road next year 😢 but these new bikes should bring in new blood which is a plus. Yer I am looking at gettinf the Bell MX9 adventure with MIPS, which is their trauma helmet system. So i will try do a video on helmets with the new tech ☺I think 2018 will be a better year for serious off road riders.

    Great preview vid of the new bikes coming out for us ADV/Dual Sport riders. My dream bike would be a serious dual sport/ADV bike from Triumph with the 675 triple! To me that would be the sweet spot between light weight & sufficient power to do some serious off road & long distance riding to get to where you are going & daily commuting. Maybe the Yamaha T7 will turn out to be that bike. I still don't understand why Yamaha hasn't made a WR450R dualsport. For the love of God Yamaha, PLEASE!!!!

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate :-) Its not like it would be hard as the 800 is just a bored out 675 so it would fit :-D and yes Yamaha please listen to the man, give us a WR450R!! (same weight or less).

    Great vid man! I'm actually downsizing myself this coming season and getting rid of my fat 800gs to replace it with a wr250r. Having thought about I for a long time now so I'm finally gonna go for it. Been watching your wr250r vids and mods with great pleasure so as for my personal video request I would like to see more of that. Keep up your great videos! Cheers from a wintery cold Sweden!

      Thanks for suggestions! Regarding the lowering of a bike - If done properly It should not affect the bike other than ground clearence. Many bikes come with the capability to be lowered through a lowering link or low seat option. If seat height is king the F700GS is stupid low for an Adventure bike, so is the Triumph tiger 800 XR www.visordown.com/features/motorcycle-top-10s/top-10-low-seat-adventure-bikes.

  • @cakeshoe
    @cakeshoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice introduction, I'm especially interested in those smaller bikes. Over here in Indonesia, where anything bigger than a 250cc gets a crazy amount of tax / import duties (up to +135%, for the bigger bikes!), most can only afford a 250. So, I expect to see tons of the Versys x300 being sold here but in it's 250cc incarnation (and being converted back up to it's 300cc form as soon as the officials aren't looking ; ). Anyway, BMW 310cc sales won't be up to much in Indonesia -- which is a huge market (+/- 60% of all vehicles are bikes).
    Shame that the KLX 250S seems to be disappearing -- the Versys is no 'replacement' for that, and the CRF 250 doesn't seem to be available at all : (
    Keep up the good vids.

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Johnathan Wilkinson Thanks! Yes I think a lot of people in the western market forget that we are a very small portion of the global market, where 250's and under rule the sales because of the tax you mentioned. Pity about not getting the CRF.

Yamahas reliable torquey 700 that has already proven itself, if they can keep the weight down and make if comfortable enough for long rides while still keeping it nibble enough for the dirt. ill be the first to put my money down if they can also keep the price under 10k USD

    Big plus for mention the problem of no 300cc in CRFL Rally. Engine already exists in CBR300R. More weight of Rally demands much more power. Without it I wait for KTM move.

      Yer if the 390 keeps those power figures and the weight off it will be a great package. I would also love to see Yamaha put the 321cc twin they have in a light weight Tenere style model. That would be a tempting package also!

    Mate if you like the sound of some of these new adventure bikes you should try to get a go on a KTM 640. They are old-ish now days buy have everything your looking for, lightweight, powerful, massive fuel capacity, reliable etc...

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really does annoy me with the KTM640, almost a perfect bike for what a lot want, even with its common issues. But then KTM proceeded to move further and further away from ultralight adventure bikes. I guess the 690 made more financial sense, as both dual sporter's and adventure riders would buy it and mod it accordingly, saving them the hassle of extra R&D.
      Hoping the 390 might be the 640's spiritual successor.

    The engine casing on the "KTM 390 Adventure" is similar to the "KTM 800 Parallel Twin Adventure" spy shots I've seen, probably the 2018 engine series designed for the new Euro emissions standards. That may help explain the large prototype catalytic converter in front of the rear wheel.

    • @chroniclesofsolid

    Of all of these, only KTM seems to be approaching the mark IMO, although the CRF Rally could eventually be a winner with some weight loss and another few horses. Of course, I'm talking about a "real" adventure bike, not just a street bike with ADV styling cues. The 390 will be worth a ride for sure, if and when it arrives. Nice and light presumably.

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Kawasaki seems like a great bike, With a small engine size you get really cheap carnet and it's very likely that it's also sold in other countries including 3. World countries. It's plenty engine to travel roads of all sorts. Since it's cheap to buy, cheap to run it will free up a shitload of money to travel and see the world.
    Me from riding 1200gs, xr450 and many more bikes are trying out a Vespa gts300 because everyone told me that's useless for touring and impossible to use as an adventure bike, I thought hey let me prove that's wrong.

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The new FE's and EXC's are definitely on the radar, especially the 500's considering their weight reduction and on road manners. But there are two reasons they did not make the list. The first is that to cover the FE501 I would have to cover the FE450 and FE350 as well as the KTM's 500, 450, and 350 EXC. Then my video would be 5 hours long :-P Secondly I personally class the FE and EXC's as enduro bikes so that also excluded them from the list.

    the kawasaki and bmw might be good sellers, they should have a fair amount of power and a little bit of weight might not be a bad thing in some circumstances but as long they keep low seat height it will be good, low seat sells. shame tough that bmw didn't but spoke wheels, or a nice small boxer engine.

      That one opened. Thanks.
      The Honda dealers in western Canada ran out of Twins because of the earthquake.
      They are really scarce.
      I'm sure I will get to see one at the Vancouver motorcycle show January 21.

    I like the look of the Honda Rally but it seems like there's nothing in the 350 - 400cc range?? And when will Suzuki update the DRZ400S ?

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yer there is a real hole in the market for 300-500cc dual sports. I wouldn't hold your breath on a DRZ update.

      @carlosandleon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martoni727 the emissions regulations are holding the manufacturers back. they can keep building old models with the past regulations. any new models have to be designed with the new regukations which id difficult to achieve with single cylinders nowadays.

      I did consider it along with the CCM450 but ultimately went with covering the main stream market where most interest lies. Perhaps I can do a hardcore enthusiast version with these bikes.

    Take the Honda CRF 250 L Rally through its paces outside of the city. They are not yet available here in the USA, but I believe they will be in Europe in bigger numbers and way before they reach the States. Dual Sport bikes are not that popular here, so getting your hands on one for a test ride is not always easy.

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 250 Rally should be here in a few weeks (Western Australia). Only down side is I will not be getting an extended test ride, so likely no dirt testing :-(

    • @pisksix8523
      @pisksix8523 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pity, yes. I think you will still be reasonably impressed with this baby dual sport. The pricing is an outrage though. You can get a CRF 650 L for the same amount of money, however the restricted autonomy contradicts its philosophy of free rider. True that your GPS tells you where the closest gas station is, but when I am in the Big Ben Park in Texas, I do not want my course to be correlating on gas stations.

    Suzuki has succeeded in making the newest Vstroms prohibitively ugly. Stupid color schemes and hideous beaks. Glad I own a 2013 "standard" white DL 650....the "prettiest" Vstrom.

    • @wkf57
      @wkf57 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the same exact thing. I too own a 2013 DL 650 in white and it's not the best looking bike but at least I don't have to look at it while riding it. But the way Suzuki "uglied up" the new V Strom's would have me looking elsewhere if I were in the market for a new bike.
